    probably about 90% of my wardrobe comes from charity shops. I find 5 basic benefits from charity shopping (most of which I assume you already know, but I like to go on about them anyway): 1. things are *way* cheaper. 2. you will be wearing something unique. 3. finding things you like and that work well together is an adventure. 4. clothing in charity shops, while secondhand, is often of really great quality and will last a long time. 5. your money is going to a good cause! (my two favorite charity stores seek to end homelessness and support those with HIV and AIDS). All that said, I haven't been shopping in a while because I don't really have the money as a uni student and I find that what I have in my closet right now is enough for me.

    I was absolutely buzzing for this video because so much of my clothes shopping is done in charity shops!! I love it because if you buy something and end up not liking it or it doesn't fit or you have to do a wardrobe clear out and chuck it, at worst it ends up being just a donation to charity? There's no keeping stuff for the sake of it just because you spent loads of money on it! Also when you're done with it you just give it back to a charity shop and it's a nice cycle! Sort of like a library but with clothes!

    I have a tip in case you are into older second hand clothes: Ask your relatives. A lot of old(er) women seem to keep all their clothes that they don't wear anymore and don't want to give to charity shops but if it stays in the family and they know who is wearing the clothes they are often quite delighted to find someone who can use them. I have a lot of dresses, skirts and blouses from my grandmas, my mum, my great grandma and about five aunties, the oldest blouse being almost 100 years old now. It's wonderful and almost everything fits me quite well because body form and height often runs in the family which is definitely a big bonus that I don't have when shopping.

    About my shopping habits:
    Until the end of last year I shopped ALL. THE. DAMN. TIME. Always in the sales section of H&M or in chairty shops, so not that bad for my bank account. I would feel so bad if I didn't buy anything for a while, and it gave me a "kick" or a "high" everytime I came home with new items. The "high" didn't last long, and then I was off again...
    I became aware of all the negative aspects of fast fashion (and the clothing industry in general), and made it my new years resolution to not support fast fashion at all. I will not support an industy who uses child workers, letting people only earn a dollar a day, who destroys the enviroment with creating " new trends" all the time etc. Since the end of 2017 I have bought 2 pairs of pants, 1 dress, 1 cardigan and 1 sweatshirt in a chairy shop. All things quite formal, and that I needed for starting my new job. Then the beginning of march my father past away 💔, and I got a massive shopping crave (I don't comfort eat when I'm sad, I comfort shop) and I bought two sweaters from the H&M sales section. I'm honestly dissapointed in my self, but thinking back to last year, I bought clothes like 4 times a week (sometimes more. No joke) so the fact that I have only bought 7 items in total on almost 3 months is amazing.
    I did a clear out of my closet, and after donating two large bin bags to chairty, I counted over 100 pieces still being in my closet. That opened my eyes as well. I DON'T NEED THAT MUCH CLOTHES! This does not count socks, underwear, shoes or jackets. If I should include shoes and jackets I would be there for days, lol.
    Long story short: I had a shopping addiction and now I'm in rehab... I am really trying to help the planet.

    • @lunalove9395
      @lunalove9395 Před 6 lety

      don't feel bad! i feel like if a lot of your clothes are from charity shops, then there's nothing wrong with having a large amount of clothes - even if you don't really need that many. (although i totally get wanting to downsize/have less or doing a capsule wardrobe) just think of all the money that went to supporting good causes!

  • @AthAthanasius

    Desperately trying to pay attention to everything Hannah is saying ... but she's soooooooooooo pretty, and I love the 'clothes show' bits with the dancing. Totally brightens my day up!

    • @AthAthanasius
      @AthAthanasius Před 6 lety

      And now to show I paid attention... I shop as seldom as possible for clothes. When I do it's with a firm idea of what I want, in, find something (or not and leave), try to be sure of fit (use the fitting room), buy or not, leave. But then I'm a mid-40s bloke who's most comfortable in jeans, t-shirt, jumper if weather demands (plus the obvious underwear and socks).
      Progress for me was actually buying non-plain T-shirts. This lead to some confusion on my part the first time wearing one with a design and text on it on the London Underground, wondering why several people had seemed to stare at me... then I realised they were reading the T-shirt!

    I have a friend who buys ALL of her clothes secondhand, and she looks amazing. Her outfits make me feel so inspired to shop secondhand more often (as do yours). But there is one thing I will say about secondhand clothes shopping: It usually takes so much more time investment. There don't tend to be many things in my size, and when they are, they're not always in great shape. But if I can find that magical item that fits and looks good and is still in good shape....oh, the joy!
    As for my shopping habits, I have a pattern of only having two major shopping times per year, corresponding with U.S. holiday sales. I usually like to go over Memorial Day weekend to pick up a few new summer items on sale, and then I like to go over Labor Day weekend to pick up some fall/winter items on sale. (New Year's Day can also be nice for winter things on sale, but I haven't tended to get out and shop on that day.) Other than that, I might get a random thing a couple times a year, but usually only if there's something specific I need.

    @oneandonlycassiandra Před 6 lety

    I've noticed that too!! I have a friend who has thrown out all her clothes because she wants a new wardrobe... twice. To me that's just baffling, I can't afford that! I'm 27 and I've found that I'm more aware of what I like and what looks good on me so I find I'm shopping a lot less. Every week or so I might go shopping but I'll get one or two things and they are things I know will add to my existing wardrobe. I've been reading "the curated closet" and it's really helped me focus while shopping. I find I'm less likely to impulse buy and spend more time looking for something I really like, not a "trendy" piece. Now I'm not ready to try a capsule wardrobe or anything like that but the book has helped me figure out my style! Great video! Charity shops are so underrated too. I like shopping there but you definitely have to be in the right mindset to look though a lot to find something. So worth it though! Great video, glad you're back!

I love to shop in thrift stores and this video is incredibly refreshing to me compared to the videos where people are constantly sharing the clothing they’ve purchased from ASOS and all that. Not that I find anything wrong with ASOS, but shopping second hand is far more sustainable and I love that you’ve made a video focused on it because that’s just right up my street. Also you’ve got some cute stuff!! I’m so shy about trying different stuff and often stick to boring & comfortable. I love all the yellows you’ve got going on - it really suits you!!

    I agree with you, charity shops are such great resources and often they help a cause! In the last few years, I've started shopping at GoodWill and my mom also is there quite a bit, so I've acquired a ton of great clothes from pricier brands that I'd never just be able to go and buy (I'm a grad student with some debt, so gotta save those dollars). Stores like GoodWill are so great too because not only do I get clothes, but also things like DVDs and good condition books. Also people really love to donate Bath and Body Works and Body Shop products, so I have so many nice quality candles now, haha. Really love consignment stores.

    I'm bit obsessed with charity shops and I tend to get most complimented on things I got from charity shops. A highlight for me would be a brown jacket with deep pockets and loads of hand-stitched embrodiery (I paid £3, and then looked up the brand online and similar items were selling for 170 dollars) I was very smug when I found that out and I was convinced that I was a fashion genius. Loved the video Hannah!

    After being enlightened about the fast fashion industry's negative effect on the environment I almost exclusively buy my clothing from op-shops (the exclusion being underwear). I also focus on buying cotton or wool items as opposed to synthetics as there's a huge issue with microfibres escaping from washing machines into the waterways (they're like microbeads in cosmetics - too small to be filtered by standard water treatment facilities). It does make it more challenging with regards to finding things that fit or compliment other garments but honestly that is what makes it more satisfying when I do actually find something worthwhile.

I wore a pair of shorts yesterday that I got from a charity shop, they were originally big baggy high-waisted vintage mom jeans in this super garish pink and white checker print, but I cut and cuffed them into shorts. People always ask where they're from and get disappointed because they can't buy their own pair, kinda sad because they can't get them but great because it means I have a one-of-a-kind piece.

I go through all the charity shops in my area once every 3 weeks/ once a month and always end up buying stuff because there's always unique things around. I have never been a huge shopper, but this year I'm trying to be more aware of my environmental impact and so as a part of that I am ONLY shopping from second stores for the whole year of 2018, to avoid the fast fashion industry and not introduce any new clothing into the world! It's also been good for me to really figure out what my style really is! I also love shopping at thrift stores, but they certainly require some time and patience!

    Majority of my clothing are from op shops (Australian here!). I grew up shopping with my mum and friends and that’s just where we went and was all we knew honestly. When I got older I delved into first-hand clothing, but I try my best not to (as it’s more ethical not to, and most definitely cheaper!)
    I think a lot of people find it difficult to find what they want, or just don’t like that the clothing has been worn by another person. I think that’s sad really, because there are so many beautiful clothes second hand!
    No one is perfect, but charity/opportunity shops are worth a try! X

    LOVE the video :) living in the depths of countryside I would rarely shop in high streets - once a year to by school shoes, and even then it was a rush because parking is expensive. Therefore I have always shopped in charity shops locally. It meant it could have a varied wardrobe as I grew up with little expenditure. Now I am at University and living in a city, those same shopping habits stick with me - I go to charity shops, Primark or not at all! Or online shop in the Christmas sales. Very limited!
    My BEST charity shop purchase was a dungaree dress, and the denim was black floral patterned on denim, and I bought it JUST before dungaree dresses became a trend in like 2013/4 (I feel like such a trendsetter!) Unfortunately it no longer fits me, but it is too beautiful to let go of, so I am keeping a hold of it until me or my brothers have a child I can give it to!
    I adore charity shop videos, so if you ever make another, it would be fab!!! :D x

    Love the plaid dress! I think you could wear it during any season. I'm like you I don't shop a lot. My favorite dress is from a second hand clothing boutique that sadly has now closed. I was so sad about that because a lot of my clothes were from that store. I mostly just shop for clothes to replace something that has worn out unless I receive a gift card.

    I am trying to cut down on shopping, especially the irrational I NEED THIS spur of the moment ridiculous purchases that do not fit my style or wardrobe. So I plan my wardrobe, go to pinterest search for some inspo, make some mood boards, see what I already have (lay it out so I get a good view of what there is - sometimes it's all to crammed up inside my wardrobe I cannot even see what I have there), decide what to keep what to give/donate/get recycled in HM, and then I go to different shops on days I feel like it, try some stuff on, think about it, and then make a few purchases. It saves me money, wardrobe space and the guilt-trip when you have so many things but "nothing to wear". Also, I kinda enjoy it more... especially giving away what I do not use anymore to a better home.

    My wardrobe is like 85% charity shop/ second hand and I rarely shop new. I love charity shopping. So much better for the environment; gives to a good cause and it's so much fun! Much more likely to get unique outfits out of it too :).
