    This is about the time I realise that, as funny as it is to think of the Grecian premier quoting Socrates to Angela Merkel to get out of paying the debt, this is a Glaswegian guy quoting Socrates, completely dispelling the unfair stereotype that you can't be Glaswegian and well-educated. This is also about the time I remember that Plato was so named because he was an entire wrestler, and "Plato" (Greek: "Broad") was his wrestling name.

    • @michaelharrison3602

      It's not that Kevin is "educated" he's intelligent there's a difference look at parliament they're all "educated" but you'd find more intelligence in a petri dish

    • @rachelfox8108
      @rachelfox8108 Před 2 lety

      @@michaelharrison3602 You know what, you are right. That being said, I think my point still stands that there's a stereotype of ordinary Glaswegian folk not being well-read, intelligent and "well-educated", that the state of being Glaswegian and being "well-educated" can't occupy the same person. That is, somehow you can be upper-class English, well-educated and yet be dumber than soup, but being working/lower-class Scottish and well-educated is considered such an oxymoron that it's a miracle if you're intelligent and proving the rule if you're as smart as a Tory MP. Like, being working or lower-class can impact your access to good education and being Scottish means the language you're educated in is very likely not even the same one you speak at home, but that doesn't mean you can't be well-educated or intelligent -- your obstacle to it is just higher.

      I'm English and I married into a family of Glaswegians. At first, I was always asking people to repeat themselves, but increased familiarity bred increased understanding. I think he adjusts his accent [slightly, but enough] for non-Scots audiences, so if you seek out videos of him performing in England or anywhere else but Scotland you'll stand a chance of getting familiarised enough with his accent to understand pretty much everything he says, even when he's performing in Scotland. I do think he's worth it.

      Being fair, Kevin is speaking Scots English (or Scottish) -- a vernacular of English that is essentially a different language entirely, but mutually intelligible with Standardised English. It would be nice for people to remember that when they act like Scottish is just a "comedy accent" on the Twitter. ("Mutually intelligible" meaning that two people can speak a different language, but as long as they are closely linked enough historically and linguistically, they can understand each other just fine despite any differences in grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Another example would be Swedish and Norwegian).
