Thank you for doing this! In 1969 I was stationed at the USN Degaussing Station in the middle of Norfolk Bay. There were 50 men stationed there. Every lunch interval we watched the only show we wanted to see....reruns of Bewitched! A new arrival once tried to change the channel and we said: "touch that dial and you'll lose your arm." LOL Many of us left and went to Vietnam, some never came back. To us it was like being back home. I still love watching this show. Now I feel like I've actually been there.

"I Dream of Jeannie" was essentially a rip off of "Bewitched" by a rival network, NBC. "Jeannie" was created by Sidney Sheldon, who shamelessly stole ideas from "Bewitched" including having Barbara Eden wear a black wig, much like Elizabeth Montgomery did, when playing "Serena." Both shows were produced by Columbia/Screen Gems, that explained the use of the same sets, according to Bill Asher, the cast and crew resented "Jeannie," Columbia eventually had to fire Sheldon, and have him replaced, Asher provided a video taped interview which can be viewed at the "Emmytvlegends," website.

    • @JL-iu7fk
      @JL-iu7fk Před 4 lety +13

I've never been a fan of I dream of Jeannie because I always kinda felt & know it was a wannabe/ RIP off of Bewitched. In Bewitched the woman had power, knew how to use it wisely. In contrast to Jeannie had power but always seem to create problems, she was just frustratingly ignorant. Barbra Eden is still beautiful but I still think Elisabeth Montgomery was gorgeous.

Ann J me too! In our neighborhood we even pretend to be the characters of the show. And Julie the girl who lived across the street from me always played Samantha. She was older. Would make me so mad. But we played anyway. And when it was time for Bewitched to come on 📺 we would run to one of our homes and never take our eyes off the tv screen until it was over. What a life. I was born in 1963. And I guess I will always love Bewitched. Makes you stop and realize just how much this show influenced us as children. And in a good way. I say all the time I wish I could just twitch my nose and my house magically be clean. Lol. Take care! Leslye

Marina I am blown away how great this tour was---marvelous attention to detail (I saw Samantha's gazebo out back!) and my gosh I had NO IDEA so many changes were made to the house & so frequently! I DO remember the drastic change to things when Dick Sargent replaced Dick York, but I thought that was just to distract us at the time, haha--anyway your friend David Peirce's closing comments were so spot-in; this WAS one of the few tv houses that felt real because we saw things from every angle--plus it just had an awesome layout! Loved the show (you picked out a good season) and LOVED THIS. A+++

@@MarinaCoatesMockingbirdLane Quite frankly, bathrooms were nearly non-existent on TV until the 70s. Beaver's bathroom became prominent on ABC as Wally became a teenager, and bathed more often. Tony Dow and Jerry Mathers stated in their Sirius XM interview overlayed on their Complete Series compilation that the pet alligator episode (57-58 season) was where the baby alligator was kept in the toilet tank. CBS freaked a bit over the episode's use of the toilet. Censors demanded that the camera could only show the toilet tank lid and no more. That was 1957. Apparently TV characters were exempt from normal human functions at that time.

I really enjoyed this video CGI tour. The Stevens' home set of "Bewitched" remains an iconic artifact of that bygone era. We always have to keep in mind while looking at this show: this set is based on a period of home design and technology that predates the first Energy Crisis. Some elements would likely be different if a home of this size were built today. One element that was never explored then but likely would be now: using the basement as living space. If a house of that size were built today, the basement would likely house the kids' bedrooms, a playroom / 2nd living room / entertainment room, and also probably Darrin's den. I agree that the house lacked at least a quarter-bath on the main floor. That would be mandatory today. One element of the show I forgot: that dreadful shag carpeting. That would be a major dirt attractor. Another element of that era I will never miss.

Along with the other paintings you mentioned, at 4:26 in, there's a pretty famous painting of Sir Thomas More.
Also, I'm glad you highlighted the stove, as I've always thought these were really cool. You can find some fun CZcams videos discussing these.
I like that you track the changes to the sets. That's one of the things I always like learning about. Looking forward to the next part1!

nice! this is excellent - easily my favorite tv house :) you got the kitchen remodel dead on with the staircase to no where, it was crazy even though i did like the nook add-on - i could go on about why i like it so much - basically i guess because for a magical "fantasy tv show" the house seems real/believable/attainable to me - also worth mentioning even though i'm sure you've been told a billion times is - there is a real, although reversed BEWITCHED house in santa monica california (not sure if the interior of the real house is a similar situation like the real 'brady bunch' house - it being completely unrelated to the tv show) thanks again- enjoy! :)

Thank you. I had heard about the home in Santa Monica. I was going to go see it for the first time last week. But Covid-19 changed my plans. Someday.
I'm working on Part 2 of Bewitched right now, where we'll go upstairs and to the backyard. Then it's onto the original Parent Trap ranch house that I started awhile back. This year I plan to do I Dream of Jeannie, The Partridge Family, Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley and the Monkees. I LOVE the "Bewitched" house! (And your rendition of it!) I think part of the reason it's so popular is because it's so cozy- you feel like you could really live there (and with all the magic, they did make use of every room). I don't know if this would be possible, but it would be really cool if you could create a CZcams 360 version of these for Google Cardboard!

    Ms. Coats,
You did a great job on the Stevens home first floor.
The last season of Bewitched Samantha and Darren had just completed a 1970s redecorating job.
That redecorating had been the only one in the script except for the very first when Endora and Samantha toured the brand new house trying our furniture, etc with witchcraft.
The last season redecorating mentioned in the script, "Endora popped in and raved about the new colors, etc
chocolate brown, the new shag carpeting, beautiful new brown sofa, etc"
Hardwood floors in the dining room and foyer with braided rugs working with the classic 1970s colonial.
Chocolate brown was hot in 1970s interior design.
Each of the other interiors including the avocado green carpeting, had simply appeared with no comment no explanation.
Endora loved the new look and so had fans, viewers BIG part of the popularity of Bewitched had been the lifestyle of the Stevens family, cocktails included.
    Kevin

I wonder if the address has any meaning. I know their first day of shooting the pilot (I believe it was the pilot) was the day Kennedy was shot. That was 11/22/63 (1163). So perhaps it's an homage to the one year anniversary of the pilot being shot? Because the address is 1164, according to your video. Anyway, great video. Thanks for putting this together.

Elizabeth Montgomery knew JFK. I remember learning this from a biography television special about Elizabeth Montgomery. They shut down production on the pilot the day JFK was assassinated.

I was always intrigued with this house even as a small child watching it in the early 70s and also watching re-runs of earlier seasons and episodes. It felt like a down to earth yet upper class and classy home. This was my favorite TV home, I used to watch the Brady Bunch (among others), but I didn't feel the same connection. Too modern or contemporary for my taste.
