Rob Gillan the point is when we wear our hair in its natural state we also put maintenance styles in or else you can comb it out into an afro, do twist outs, etc. So cornrows, braids, Locs are styles in which our natural hair can be neatly wore instead of all over our heads (not that its a bad thing) so yes, they ARE natural styles meant to keep the hair kempt.

Both are equally important. The idea that natural hair is unkempt spreads to the workplace and it's discrimination at the end of the day. If we only worry about learning and grades but we don't fight discrimination then that is only half the battle. Once again, both are important. Just because it's just "hair" demeans the problem. That is like saying that there more important things to focus on-- but that's not the point. It's still a problem nonetheless.

As someone who went to Iroquois High School in Louisville KY when this happened, I had no idea that this was a thing. There were a lot of people at my school with their natural hair, no one ever batted an eye at it. When I seen this on social media, I thought it was absolutely insane. I'd never seen anything like that implemented at Iroquois. Then again, Butler is the most respected and disciplined (polite way of saying they think they're better than everyone else, maybe the students don't think that, but the school itself absolutely) in the district. So I can't say I'm surprised that out of every school, it ended up being Butler who did something like this.

I knew a girl who was African American and had gotten a severe self harm problem due to rules like this. It caused her to hate herself her skin color ,her natural hair ,her self. It was one of the saddest things ever because I’m in there cuz I’m depressed about fat something I could control and she’s in there can’t say not one nice thing about herself. And the biggest slap to the face was she’s a foster child being raised by a white family do you have any idea how much money her mother spent learning how to do theses banned styles to make her child feel good? Imagine getting your foster kid you prep ahead of time learning about there hair how to style it then get told by the community your natural hair is ugly please put on a wig? Shame on them
