THE BEST DIY AUTOMOTIVE SMOKE MACHINE (VACUUM LEAK DETECTOR FOR $45?!)

  • This is a great way to find vacuum, exhaust, and engine leaks on any vehicle. Why pay close to $100 for a store bought smoke tester when you can make your own for under $45. Make sure you let us know how you liked the build or anything that you would change. We love feedback. Thanks for checking out the video and make sure to subscribe to the channel for more amazing content. Thanks!

    I like the basic design but would make a few changes. I'd aim for ~10Ω on the wire. Could catch fire if too low. And I use VG (vegetable glycerine), more smoke and less fumes than baby oil. As for an air supply I just use an aquarium air pump. Evap systems typically only designed to hold 1-2PSI, over-pressurizing could lead to a false positive leak while testing.

    Technically & instructively a great video. However, a parts list would make this video a 10/10 w/o list 8.5/10. It may seem "obvious" but when you go to get parts something will be overlooked and necessitate a second trip to Ace Hardware

    i made a jog machine into smoke tester that was 1000x more complicates 5x more expensive and couldnt even put small diameter hose on it because it would instantlly puddle in the hose making no smoke and would get so hot you couldnt hold the hose after 20 seconds.these simple designs like yours i call homemade jar style have non of these issues and the best smoke testers.

    I'm looking into a smoke machine for my Silverado, that has all new intake gaskets, etc..... I like your setup. I've noticed a gas smell, and haywire fuel trims lately. Your video showed me exactly what I need to fix lol. Thanks! I might plug that evap line, and watch my trims! seems like the culprit

    I like this much more than the pickle jar and soldering iron method, very clever!! Instead of an air compressor (which I do not own) I'm going to use an air mattress inflator or maybe the shop vac on the blow setting.
    I agree with the other commenters below that knowing where to find some of the materials would be nice, such as the jumper cable leads and the stainless wire. . . I might try to use some MIG wire off of my welder and see if I can get the same resistance.

      @alwayssomethinggarage794  Před 2 lety

      I tried to look it up and there is not a lot of information about baby oil or mineral oil smoke points. I seen some average mineral oil flash points are around 275 deg. Then it says for get the smoke point it’s around -100 deg from the flash point. But the exact value for baby oil I do not know the answer to that. If you look up the data sheet for Johnson and Johnson’s baby oil all the specs for the flash point and smoke point are N/A. So for a quick answer I would say probably around 100-175 deg. But I’m sure everything varies. Thanks.

      Who is the peanut gallery down in left field... You are in the absolute wrong industry if you think that way. We make videos for entertainment and to help people out. This is such a contradicting statement about the same thing you do. What about all your equipment I see on your channel? How did you learn how to do that? How did you get into that field? What about all these videos from years ago that I see doing the same exact thing that you are doing. I would say probably most things you do or want in life you got that idea by seeing it. So, this saying of stealing peoples ideas/videos is completely idiotic. Competition makes every industry flourish. You take other peoples ideas and you try to execute them better. Like I said earlier, you are in the wrong industry with that state of mind. Good luck. Thanks for the view.
