  • In 2018, the Utah Jazz had one of the brightest futures in the league. The talented duo of Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert was expected to bring a championship to Utah, but what instead followed was some of the most shocking and catastrophic playoff failures in NBA history. Year after year, this duo failed miserably, until they were ultimately split up in 2022. How could a team with so much talent deteriorate so frequently come playoff time? What decisions did the Jazz make that doomed their core of Mitchell and Gobert, and what could they have done differently? This is the unbelievable story of how Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert failed the Utah Jazz.

    The thing to remember is that Gobert was a 27th pick. Mitchell 13th. You can't expect players drafted at those spots to not have some glaring flaws, and much of the rest of the roster was the same. I loved this team, but I'm not surprised they flamed out in the playoffs. Of their top nine guys, they were relying on so many guys in their mid-thirties (Conley, Bogdanovic, Ingles) or players who has simply never been reliable defensively (Clarkson, Mitchell, most of the old guys too). They got away with it in the regular season thanks to spacing and Gobert cleaning up mistakes, but it would never work once a foe could gameplan against you and repeatedly target the weaker defenders and pull Gobert out of the paint, as we saw season after season.

    I was one of donovan mitchell’s earliest supporters. I watched his draft day livestream and was freaking the hell out when I saw my Jazz of all teams were trading up to draft him. And I shot my step dad a text talking about “omg imagine Gordon and Donovan Mitchell on the same team”, and obviously he didn’t really care, because Donovan Mitchell was just a random late lottery pick, a lot like Trey Lyles or Alec Burks.
    Then we went to those summer league games and I was immediately vindicated.
    I’ll always love this era of Jazz ball. I dont even care how dysfunctional it was. Whatever. We’re never winning a championship, I’m resigned to that because for some reason people from outside Utah just really fucking hate Utah and hate the idea of living here as though we’re all Amish people who banned drinking alcohol, but at least we have the potential to be fun, and we were really fun during this era.

    • @Romanus-
      @Romanus- Před rokem +1

      It’s because Gobert is unplayable in the playoffs. Teams just go small and abuse his slow footwork in PnR’s. Since he has zero offensive game he can’t punish teams for going small by scoring in the paint. The guy literally has made zero improvement on offense since his first year in the league till now. I don’t think it’s too much to ask for him to have 2 or 3 post moves if you’re paid like a superstar. Like Mcgrady said, what is he working on in the off-season? It’s crazy that a max player doesn’t even have a single post move

    • @Chocolouf

    Let me just say though, despite the fact that the Mitchell-Gobert era didn't pan out the way they wanted, you have to give it up to the entire Jazz who tried their best to capitalize on this but just fell short:
    - The front office were able to trade for Mitchell who wasn't really seen as a franchise changing player. Lucky them since Hayward would leave in the following free agency that came after. They then tried surrounding Mitchell and Gobert with more offensive players which sacrificed their defense but immensely improved their offense
    - Coach Quin Snyder then made adjustments to his offense with the more offensive minded roster he was given with and it showed with a historic offense. Was it too simplified? Yes, but it worked wonders for them for the most part
    Wherever the Jazz go from here on out, hope they can build to be true contenders once again

    Clickbait title ngl.
    The fault should be held in their FO, not the players. They had an excellent offensive rotation for years in Donovan, Conley, Ingles, and Bojan. All of their starters have no defensive prowess but Rudy Gobert is such an defensive monster at protecting the paint that he can bolster a top ten defense in the regular season.
    They get 'exposed' in the playoffs because elite offensive players can punish their drop coverage with three pointers. None of the Jazz perimeter players can chase around screens, have good off-ball awareness, or just good at defense in general. Rudy is the glue that keeps them together.
    Their FO has made zero moves to improve their obvious short comings. What they need is at least some permieter defenders that can play their drop coverage and still have ok offensive value.
    Donovan and Rudy did their jobs. It is unreasonable to expect them to become great at everything.

    The lac of Rudy offense and Mitchell defense should’ve complemented each other. I honestly think they could’ve had more progress if Snyder stepped down sooner. If they had gotten a fresh voice sooner they could’ve tried a different look rather than running it bac year after year. Not only that but a fresh and powerful voice could’ve nipped the drama in the bud. He could’ve made it a win or leave situation a lot sooner and maybe that could’ve curbed the divaness in the loccer room. Another big problem is the fact they gave Mitch the keys too early, he didn’t and doesn’t deserve the keys. Gobert grinded from a bust to 3 time dpoy. Their entire defense was successful solely because of him, that perimeter has been getting torched for years. People are just catching on because of social media. Yea Mitch is a guaranteed buccet, but that’s it. You can build/ rebuild around Gobert. You can’t with Mitch. He needs the ball too much and doesn’t do anything else but score. It’s not like he’s a luka type where he’s a yea I need the ball, and yea I may score a lot, but best believe I’m setting my team up just as much and I’ll pass on my shot off a better one anytime. Mitch won’t do that, so now you HAVE to add another ball handler to run the offense, but he’ll never be able to run the offense if Mitch has the ball all the time. The only reason I can partially accept them getting rid of Gobert is the draft capital(which is a risk based off history) and his contract. But I honestly don’t gaf about his contract BECAUSE HE EARNED IT! He deserves every dollar regardless of his lac of offense. If you as a team focus on that with him he can make more apart of his game. He showed his potential when he avg 19 &12 🤷🏾‍♂️. But bac to the contracts, Rudy deserves his money and shouldn’t be penalized for it where as Mitch ain’t did a damn thing warrant such a huge contract. They gone have to get rid of him if they really want ti rebuild. The only way you rebuild with Mitch as your starter is you bring in a voice and brain like Lebron cp3 or rondo to run your 1 and force Mitch to play off ball at 2 like d book. If he swallowed his ego and did that he has the potential to be the next wade esc player on offense, if not better with his consistent 3. That’s why I’m curious to see how it’s gone work if he does go to the knics. Jb went there cuz he wanted to run his team, Mitch gone want the same thing. But if Mitch can accept the 2 and let jb cook at 1 they can be lethal. Like a younger cp and book no cap

Gobert is more like a Marc Gasol type, no way they were suppose to block perimeter shots as a 7'0" bruiser, unlike those lanky 7'0" like Durant. True centers should never be expected to block perimeter shots, their job is to stop the other bruisers from dominating the paint (ex. Jokic, Embiid, Valunciunas).
