    Ive been using MPC for 22 years, and I have every single beat I've ever made.... Thousands of beats..... The only way I ever lost mine was when there was a power outage and my equipment turned off..... Ive been tracking all my beats into Protools since 1999... I make beats, and then I immediately track them into protools, the disk was a shirt term place for it, but most of the time, I tracked them into the computer immediately without even saving them on a disk.... I have probably 2TB full of backed up beats on external hard drives.... I had to transfer 600GB out of really old external drives at one point 15 years ago, but I didn't lose anything.... It's a good feeling to still have the first beats I was making back in 1998... Much love.

    True information, in 2010 I lost all my beats and a couple albums I recorded. Only had a few mp3s of the recordings. Never mixed or mastered the material. I had to start all the way over. Now I have 30 jump drives, 20 Sd cards, 10 physical external hard drives and multiple cloud accounts. I’m all about backups now. If your a music writer producer or creator of any kind having multiple backup sources should be as much apart of your budget as your equipment

    Backup! Backup! Backup! I learned the hard-way. A windows update cause a glitch in my system and mangled everything! I lost 7 projects I was working on and had to do a complete reinstall. I triple backup my stuff. I have a Time Machine drive, I have BackBlaze, and I have a NAS backup which also gets backed up to the cloud. I learned my lesson long ago after having to wipe and reinstall my OS a few times. Backblaze is automatic it even backs up my external drives. The same with Time Machine. The Time Machine drive also gets backed up to Backblaze. The NAS backup could be automatic but I actually do that one manually as needed. That has 8TB of storage. The MPC is a little hard just because you have to copy your stuff to a PC constantly, so you have to remember to back it up regularly manually. The trick is to have multiple back ups because there is always multiple points of failure.

    It always takes the loss of data to make many people take precautions like keeping multiple backups. You should never rely on one source for backup. Cloud server storage can go bad too. They keep your data on more than one server and location too to address that risk.

Bought a new flash USB stick. I'd like to see a Akai add a few features to the browser, would be great to have a back up entire drive to new drive option or just a simple copy and paste folder option. I learned my lesson. Never again. Have back up for the back up and also have the Cloud. 500GB hard drives as they are cheaper to fix and recover info if need be. I also put particular projects on data keys so I have another spare just in case.
    With my workflow I save kits that I use to a CF card and then load them into either my MPC500 or MPC2000XL to work with. The beats that I make I create with the kits and the samples that I chop into the beats get mixed live into my DAW by mute and unmute. Once I have it saved in my DAW I wipe it from my MPC. DAW file, wav mix, wav master are all saved on two HD drives and the Cloud.

    Where is the difference to loosing "everything" on the MacBook SSD or an external HDD? If you don't plan or do backups (even with time maschine) there is always a certain risk. It is more likely to make a mistake and delete things actively by error (like on the digitakt or if you save to the wrong project). The good thing (at least with me) is that the creative process can be recalled somehow once done - no matter if it is writing, drawing or programming music.

    Great vid. Could you tell a bit about your method of storing all beats in that one folder you showed us? From MPC standalone to full backup in less than 100 words 😉 And how easy is it to find back certain projects within that 49GB of data? Particular structures?✌️😎👍

    • @labandlegacy
      @labandlegacy  Před 3 lety +1

      Most important thing is to hit "eject" when you pop out the SD card, lol. After that I just open the project in MPC Software, and save it to my usual beat folder. MPC projects are fairly small (Most of my beats are around 20-40MB). I try to do that every week (I only make 3-4 beats a week in standalone) so it doesn't take very long at all. Less than 5 minutes week. 👍 I also name my beats by date, then name.

      I appreciate it bro. I built my own PC a couple episodes back, so I'm sure I could figure out a RAID. I may even end up putting together a NAS for video at some point. iamsight only because after 1 year your still paying for the same space at the same price. Now if it was a hard drive you would have twice the space and every year you will have more and more space in the long 🏃‍♀️ run on different hard drives for every year u pay. Where as virtual space u pay to keep the same space every year but it’s still only the same amount of data space. So say I pay $100 a year for 3 years for 50gigs of space. I would have spent $300 a still only have 50gigs. Now I spend that same money 💴 on 3 50gig hard drives in 3 years I will have 150gigs for my $300 verse that $300 for only 50gigs I paid for 3 years ... get it ? In other words try not to spend to much on virtual space verses buying hard drives cuz all u doing is paying for the same space every year and it doesn’t get bigger unless you pay more a year. Virtual space is good for transferring large data amounts . But to pay for the same space every year will be costly in the long 🏃‍♀️ run. Just a lil food for thought ✊🏾
