Tim Hyatt This is very true, Satan only tested people's faith while telling the truth, God not only lied, he posted of his all to human falts of being, jealous, vengeful, and angry. God also demanded the murdering, of every man, women, child, and even the livestock; save the young virgin girls. Note, the Bible doesn't refer to them as women which means; these prepubescent girls which the Bible states the men were to keep for themselves; were to be raised s sex slaves. This is of no surprise as, Jesus himself speaks as to; how slaves are to respect the words of their owners the way they would the words of God. He even spells out how a slave owner is only to be punished if his slave dies within 3 days of a beating. Any God that resorts to the threat of condemning someone to hell, and bribes them with the prize of an afterlife; along with all his other misdeeds which includes, punishing the innocent while rewarding the guilty, is no diety worthy of my worship and devotion.

It's actually good advice for other heated discussions, sometimes it's better to leave your interlocutor with "food for thought" that they can digest after the conversation, rather than beat them into some sort of submission. If your aim is to pursuade someone of your opinion (whether it be around faith or anything else) then it's very easy to lose despite "winning" the argument and often much better to break up the discussion into more manageable chunks.

My earliest memory is speaking in tongues. I have been dunked in water anointed with oil. I was a Christian, until the day came when I got schizoid affective disorder. Everything I hallucinated was religious. I "saw" God. But as the disease progressed the elders of the church prayed over me. The actually said I might have a "gift" of seeing demons and satan so forth. The disease progressed and finally the church accused me of being in sin therefore God could not or would not heal me. I had mistakenly believed that Jesus would heal me. I was childlike in faith and so so hurting. Finally I went to the doctor. And I was "healed." I spent three years of literal hell on earth and begging to be healed from the almighty Father. All it took was a pill. And years of therapy rebuilding my shattered psyche. All from a simple child like plea. I finally in my right mind read the bible. And saw it full of horrors that I do not want any part of. Killings of children and animals and nailed to a cross and so forth. And the quite frank bullshit. So this is my testimony from someone who loved God as much as David. With all my fiber and mind. To a full blown science believing very vocal atheist. Amazing how deluded I was. And to my dying day the immense power of the human mind. I have a peaceful life now. I went back to school and became a social worker. I am now employed full time and next spring am getting my MSW. I look over my successes, my first part time job, my little studio so I am no longer homeless to graduating to holding a full time position I do not attribute my life accomplishments to a god. I did it through very hard work and many loving people in my life. Anyways I have been wanting to express my gratitude for shows like this. I do not feel so lonely.

I liked the vacuum cleaner salesman analogy. I have this exact issue with a family member of mine. What I find is that if you tell a religious person something, say like for example a contradiction in the Bible or something that doesn't make sense in their religion, they don't usually have a rational response. They have never had their beliefs challenged before, so their response to something they don't have a response for is immediate anger and lashing out, e.g you are the devil! To them the very notion that someone would question or challenge their belief is satanic. And I think religion is often the one little safe area where some people feel they can always be right and never be challenged. I.e., "I've been wrong about everything else in my life, but I know I'm right about God!" And to them, the audacity of anyone to challenge that safe area makes them extremely angry.

    • @typhoonzebra
      @typhoonzebra Před 5 lety +4

@@ParanormalEncyclopedia The thing is, this is a dualistic thing. In many ancient religions, the concept of dualism occurs. Two equally powerful but opposite forces; good and evil, light and darkness, push and pull, above and below, yin and yang, etc etc. This was one of the many aspects of earlier mythology, incorporated into/plagiarised by modern Abrahamic religions, much like how Roman mythology and Arthurian legend and Celtic mythology incorporated parts of different religions to make it easier to swallow for other people.
The problem, of course, arises when a fundamentally monoistic religion tries to incorporate dualism. The result is, as we know, laughably self contradictory, haphazard and quite frankly, hideously messy.
The concept of the devil (or just the "evil" force that is equal in power to the "good" force) long predates Christianity and Judaism but was incorporated long after the Jews stuck their feet in the ground at the whole "only one god and nothing is nearly as powerful as he is."
This is a glaring and unsightly reminder of how jumbled up and sewn together religions are. While believers in it have tried their damnedest to find workarounds, some almost being decent if not elegant, there is no reconciling dualism and monoism. They are mutually exclusive.
The attempts of early Abrahamic religions to incorporate dualism speaks volumes about how willing they were to drastically change their doctrine to reel other people into it and, by extension, how reliable their doctrine is.

The problem with the salesman comparison is that nowadays, for some reason, people automatically disregard any comparisons or analogies as valid arguments. They think you mean that A and B are identical, and you hear them say stuff like "you can't compare those two; they are completely different", or "why are you comparing apples and oranges?" Well, comparing apples and oranges isn't always a bad idea. As long as there is overlap between A and B, it's fair to compare them for the sake of highlighting that overlap. The fact that the rest of A and B are different may or may not impact the validity of the comparison, but it certainly doesn't invalidate it by default. But for some reason people try to claim intellectual high ground whenever their opposition makes a comparison even though it really isn't justified.

Someone once told me the devil was tricking me to not believe. My response and the dialogue went like:
Them: The devil is tricking you into not believing
Me: OK, let's for the sake of this conversation, assume the devil is real. Are you telling me he can trick me without me knowing it that there's no god?
Them: Yes, the devil is very deceptive. He's powerful
Me: OK, so he has the power to trick people without us knowing and make us believe things we wouldn't normally believe?
    Them: Yes.
Me: Ok, cool. So how do you know I'm the one being fooled?
    Them: What do you mean?
Me: Well, if he can fool people into believing god isn't real, couldn't he trick people into following the wrong god?
Them: What do you mean? I don't understand.
Me: You said the devil is devious and can trick people. So, how do you know that I am being tricked and not you?
Them: Oh, the bible tells me that.
Me: So how do you know that the people who wrote the bible weren't fooled by the devil?
Them: Because god tells us so.
    Me: He talks to you?
Them: He communicates with us, yes.
Me: How do you know that that's God and not the devil?
Them: I just know. (by this time, he's clearly uncomfortable the way this has gone)
Me: So, why can't I just know that I am not being fooled then?
Them: Because you have no basis to know that. I do. God.
Me: But you have no basis to KNOW for certain that it's God communicating with you and not the devil. You said the devil is deceptive and can easily trick people.
Them: God protects us from the devil.
Me: Oh, OK. So God protects you, and not us. Why?
Them: Because we were born again.
Me: But how do you know that? How do you know that it's not this devil that's telling you to do all of this. To follow and worship a god that isn't real or isn't THE god? Wouldn't fooling billions of Christians and Muslims into following the wrong god be a better feather in his cap than just the few million non believers?
Them: I know because God speaks to me. It's written on my heart.
Me: OK, so I think I understand. You believe that only non believers can be fooled because we're weak minded and don't have god talking to us.
Them: Yes. You're easier to trick. You don't have the protection I have.
Me: The protection you can't know is really what you think it is and can't show anybody? That protection?
    Them: I have faith.
Me: Good for you. I have reason and logic.
Them: So, who do you think will win the election?
Me: So we're done with the devil talk?
Them: Yes, we're at an impasse
me: Kind of. You have to believe that everyone else but you, christians, can be fooled by the devil to justify your belief and this argument.
    Them: Because it's true.
Me: How do you know? Can you demonstrate that?
Them: I have some work to do. We can talk later.
It probably wouldn't be a surprise to anyone that the topic of religion and specifically the devil has never come up again with him. At least not with me.
So, the devil argument can be turned right back to them if you ever had it used on you.
