Taking a glimpse inside NORTH KOREA 🇰🇵 (surreal experience)

  • North Korea is one of the most closed countries on Earth for travel. After 3 years of complete isolation following the pandemic, it is still closed to this day. So, intrigued and hoping to get a glimpse of this fascinating nation, we travelled north from Seoul to the DMZ, the highly contentious border between North and South Korea, to learn more about life in both Korea's and how the two sides fell in to conflict in the first place and how it affects the daily lives of millions of Koreans on both sides to this day. We even managed to take a peek across the border, in to North Korea towards Pyongyang, over the town of Kaesong.

Some of the video gotten wrong name of the sea near Korea peninsula... it is historically 'East sea' correct and (Sea of Japan secondly) . Japan has invested much to change this name as the way they want globally... and lots of things bought it and showed it now wrong as Sea of Japan... which is totally wrong historically... hope you see it right, know it, and correct your subtitles ...name...your video has been great btw

Very interesting. My Grandad fought there so I went in Sept 2022 for a look around and saw all the things you did. I actually saw a NK farmer through a telescope and learned about the daft flag pole stuff, had my passport checked by military, had a rough wanker down the tunnel (you are right, proper effort getting down there). Good video.

For many of us in America, the Korean War was just the backdrop to the TV show MASH, which was in constant reruns as a kid. My great uncle served during the Korean War and fell in love with the country and spoke of it fondly. I’ve also been fortunate to work with a number of Koreans. A beautiful culture and people. I think you wonderfully captured the beauty and friendliness of a people who must live constantly on guard with eyes fixed north. The contrast between the DMZ and Donghae was so interesting to see. It was also interesting to see how touristy some parts of the DMZ are. Would not have guessed that.

My family had relatives behind the Iron Curtain of East Germany so I understand the sadness. I’ve often thought about how life would be so much simpler because it is all within our control. I, too, love the wilder coastal areas. Keep the fun coming!

Really interesting to see your visit to the DMZ. I have never been to South Korea, but visited North Korea in November 2018. The DMZ and Kaesong was the first day trip. Our guide interestingly said she found visiting the DMZ from the north side much more relaxed than from Seoul. Kaesong is a beautiful city that feels like the heart beat of the Korean nation. I found the thought of 70+ years of total division heart wrenching. There is so little motor traffic outside of Pyongyang, and when the Covid lockdown came and I had an essential journey through my work, I immediately thought of usual service in the DPRK!

I really like Donghae and it's neighboring town, they seem so laid back and comfortable. Reminds me of Berlin, New Years Eve 1989. Standing on top of the wall that night at Brandenburg Gate. The unknown of what was beyond. Then the surreal moment around 1am people were breaching it (each way, and man we helped a lot of people up from the East side onto/over the wall). But before we left that night, we also hopped down into the East. The guards etc on patrol had all just cleared off. 'This is unexpected and nuts: How far do we dare going?'. Not so far, maybe a 30mins wander about, a few icy-cold hundred metres in/around, with eyes peeled. Wintery desolation. I watched M+Js fascinating vid here and it reminded me of that. And I thought, how might it be if one moment they had an hour when they could just wonder into the North and back, and how shocking might it be...

I am a dad of a 7 year old boy that was kidnapped to South Korea.
Korea is a partner country of "Hague convention" that is supposed to promptly return children that were illegally taken across the border.
FBI was trying to book a flight to Korea to rescue the child. However, Korean government stopped them saying this is a civil matter and because it is not criminal in Korea, the dad should go through civil court. (Especially because Korea is a signatory state of Hague convention)
I did. Korea took 2 years to make a final decision that this boy has to PROMPTLY return to the US. But they didn't prepare an enforcement mechanism. I got a total of 10 court orders just in Korea(including the Korean Supreme court order). And my son Bryan's 3 week trip became a 5 year separation from me.
I talked to multiple Korean officials and although they admit the problem, nobody is taking responsibility.
They ask the child who doesn't even remember dad "Do you wanna stay here, or do you wanna go to Dad?" And if he says he wants to stay, they go home.
They say it's too late. "He doesn't remember you, so what do you want us to do?"
Korea calls this respecting the child.
On the other hand US court orders clearly states that the mother has serious concerns of mental issues and she is a threat to the child. The patenting evaluator said this is a form of child abuse.
Korea ignores this problem. They just say we can't do anything.
I love Korea and I wanted to trust that they can respect the law, but I am at a point that I have to take this into my own hands and raise public awareness. Last time I protested at Pike Place Market, and this time I went to Korean Consulate in Seattle.
    [Watch Video](czcams.com/video/4wXAvR_J6RI/video.htmlsi=gY5cZd-HM1ycaGdg)
I would appreciate it if you can spread the words, and tell people.
If we can't bring Bryan back, no children will be safe from being abducted to South Korea.
    Thank you.

they're not saying that the fish is from Russia... It says the fish is domestic on the sign above the fish. I think he asked you guys if you guys were from Russia since there's direct ships from Russia to Donghae

Matt and Julia, you are such an amazing couple. Thank you so much for this video about that forbidden area. I am an American (don't hold that against me, I'm not a Trump supporter), and I have been raised to dislike the North Koreans. I don't dislike them, I don't care for their leader, but the people of North Korea need their freedom. I feel bad for them, as many have been separated from family members in South Korea for decades older than me.
The thing that I notice is the lack of rubbish seen on the streets of Korea. The Korean people have respect of their neighbourhoods.

A question for Julia - are you tempted to use your Russian passport to visit North Korea over the Russia/North Korea border?

    • @MattandJulia

Hey Peter. It isn’t that easy, on any passport you need to go on a tour and besides it is still officially closed because of the pandemic x

In late February, yes. They will be the first group inside the country since 2020. But so far, that’s all, no further details on a reopening yet 🙂
