Traveling to Far East Russia (on a Korean Cargo Ship)

- Travelling to Vladivostok in far east Russia from Korea not how you would expect. With flights currently unavailable, we found one route was still open between Korea, Japan and Russia. So we decided to book it and travel to Vladivostok, Russia on one of the worlds least travelled passenger/cargo ferry routes.
Travelling by cargo ship across the Sea of Japan (or East Sea), between two completely separate worlds has been a dream of ours for as long as we can remember!
With Korea reopening her maritime border to allow the resumption of the Du Won Shipping route to the Russian Federation, we headed to port of Donghae, in South Korea to try and see if we could hitch a ride on one of the ships that travel across the sea past North Korea, and onwards to Russia.
It was an incredible experience and one we are so glad we can bring you on. On that note, lets head to Russia.
Could you travel on a ship like this? 😊

Traveling on a Korean Cargo Ship (to Far East Russia)
What's the longest boat journey you have taken?!
Thank you so much for watching! ❤

From St. Vincent, Caribbean to Union Island, it takes 2 hours and it's 78 kms. That was a nice boat ride, enjoyed the trip but that curtain lane way to the dining room was a bit odd. Really looking forward to seeing some of Vladistock and you train trip. ❤
From Lifou, New Caledonia to Sydney, Australia, ~2200km ~3-4 days, however it was on a Carnival Spirit cruise ship, completely different experience :)
From vung tau in vietnam to Valletta in malta, took around 4 weeks. It was on a new build ship that I work on. Spent a month in Vietnam before we left, great country and great people.
Been twice from England to New Zealand, once via the Suez and once around Africa when the canal was blocked, as I say decades ago!!!
From Newcastle to Esbjerg (Denmark). Beats Dover to Calais and Scrabster to Orkney.
Poor american here and have never had the money to travel. I love watching your videos to experience places I have never heard about and some that I probably could not go to. You have a beautiful family and hope you stay safe.
We have watched ALL your videos once, and have now started on a second round. You two really stand out from other vloggers with your natural charm and how well you work together as a couple. I have to be honest and say that we miss Julias humour and goofy faces from the early videos when you made us laugh so many times. Now you seem to have turned more professional and serious and have let go of all the funny things you used to say and do. We hope it will come back to you. Please dont let 200k stress you and change who you used to be. Oh, and Matt, according to the ladies here you look MUCH more handsome and cute with shorter hair and no beard. 😉Cheers from Norway. 😃❤️
Hahaha, thank you so much for your amazing support and lovely comment, we really appreciate it! And we will never change 🥰❤️
And I’m not sure I agree with the short hair, I think we much to do a community poll 😁😅❤️
Nah. All it takes is a scissors and a razor😂 You guys are just the best!!😃❤
You are visiting one of my bucket list locations. I cannot explain why, but I just want to go to Vladivostok and even onto Sakhalin Island for some reason. Granted, I have heard that the seafood is incredible in that region. Thank you for sharing.
Oooh, can’t wait to share it all with you and give you some ideas for your trip 🥰❤️
When you have kids you will understand restrictions very well. Love the way you share views, the people and the sensations. Your sisters voice ?, describing the dinner options is very nice. Not too into the kiss at the end even though your awesome. Great videography.
I had no idea there was a ferry service from S Korea to Russia - how cool! Looking forward to the upcoming content! Love you guys!
Can’t wait to share more starting next week! Lots of love 🥰❤️
Your videos really are a breath of fresh air, in this case, sea air. Very well filmed and a joy to watch 🤗🤗🤗❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much Nigel, really appreciate your support!! 🥰❤️
Stay safe. I love your adventurous , free spirit. And your sweetness and openness is contagious. In a beautiful way….
Thank you so much!!! Really appreciate your support 🥰❤️
@@MattandJulia A d*** move to advertise Russia.
Living in Kitakyushu, Fukuoka prefecture, Japan I have wanted to visit Vladivostok for years (also Dalian, Kitakyushu’s sister city). Looking forward to your next episode! Thanks for your great work. 👍🙇
It is a beautiful city , can’t wait to share it with you in the next video! ❤️ Love to Japan! 🥰
Wish the world had more beautiful people in it like yourselves. Your videos are amazing, and so interesting. Countries I'd never probably ever get to see at my age. Thank you for bringing all the wonderful places you visit into our homes. 🙏
Not the first time I cried at your video. There will be something about it that is hard to describe. Thanks for your sharing.
Thanks for sharing your journey with us! These are not sights we get to see in the US very often. I love getting a peak at the "other side" and confirming that you're all just lovely normal people living on that side of the world, too. The food looked amazing on that ship. I've long wanted to take the Trans Siberian train trip. I don't know if I'll ever get the opportunity, so I'm very much looking forward to your videos from the train. Cheers!
Thanks to elli by sharing your channel and we found it easily . You’re amazing couple doing great job 🎉
The comments about the birds really got me. Your train trip to Yakutsk and the trip itself is one of my favorite videos of yours. Can't wait for the next videos as I love train travel. Since there is a delay with these I am guessing it will not be in the dead of winter this time and with many side trips. I can't wait and I loved the way you filmed this one. Beautiful work.
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it 🥰 Can’t wait to share more! ❤️
That night view of the ocean is really reminded my own journey on Baltic Sea. Thanks for the video, guys!
Julia, you have such a beautiful voice, and Matt, I love the way you both do the narrations, it's perfect!❤
So nice to explore the planet with you, very interesting!
I love that you are bringing us 'The road less travelled', Us English speakers are not familiar with these routes that you are taking, it's quite interesting to witness xxx
Thank you so much Ruth! Really appreciate it 🙏🏼❤️
Once again a great video! You put so much love into it and it's heartwarming to see the love and joy from both of you. I hope I can join you on your Humankind expeditions one day.
Thank you so much, really appreciate it! It would be amazing to meet you on a trip one day! 😍
Old the places we don't know thanks for showing us Matt &Julia thanks for taking you sister along big experiences for her big hug 🤗 ❤
Another awesome boat journey, you three are sure going far n wide. I enjoy watching your trips, stay safe n keep exploring all the while having fun.
So cool!! I love water travel. When I was 15 my mom (hated flying), my sister and I went from New York City to Europe on the SS France (now defunct) cruise liner. What an experience! There is something about approaching land from a ship that is such an exciting perspective. Thanks for taking us with you!
Cool journey on the ship, this disco looked like it could give you an epileptic seizure from the lights. Korea must have been an epic experience for you all.
Safe travels and looking so forward to many more of your adventures.
Love your videos and I find your joy in life so heartwarming ....❤
You’re videos just get better and better, I’ve really loved them all. So lovely to see you and Matt dancing on the deck. Stay safe 🏴🇬🇧🥀🥀
Cool vid, safe travels you two. Looking forward to your Vladivostok vid.

Your ongoing support means the world to us! 😍❤️
What lovely people!! I enjoyed this so much. Your explanation of the vastness of the earth and ocean was very on point. The ladies have such beautiful eyes. Best to you and your future travels.
The food looked great. Loved your theory about birds Julia. Lovely video
Really enjoyed this video!!!❤❤❤
Thank you so much! ❤️🙏🏼
Birds fly free over many thousands of miles to f=go from ie Russia to Europe during winter, It always astounds us how these birds make these epic journeys! We watch your journeyss in your own epic ways!!! One of our best friends is from Vladisvostok but emigrated to the UK over ten years ago. One of the loveliest people I ever worked with and now work with many Ukrainians who are also the loveliest people too. My father lived near your family, Mat. We know that area very well too. We wish you both safe, for filled and no doubt interesting future journeys!
Us too! Insane how far they travel! 😲 Oh wow, in which town did your father live? 😊
Thanks for a great video, I completed the teans Siberian train journey on my own in 1997, after working as a social worker in Russian. Great experience.
Good stuff as usual guys.
All your vloggs are so wonderfully put together and I love watching every vlogg !! ❤❤❤

I always watch your videos at the end of my evenings because they're so relaxing. I will dream of the stars from the boat deck tonight. I'm also very excited to see you explore your home country in a new way, with as much enthusiasm as any other country.

Incredible video.,I can't wait to see the next video.❤Oh ..US subscriber here.
Thank you so much! Lots of love to the US from us all 🥰❤️
What a nice ship! You guys really do find gems in your travel stories. Clips of the disco were weird. Expected some good dance moves Matt! Nice! Beautiful filming. How do you manage to have the right clothes for the weather all the time? Yikes, that bed was spacious?
You are joking! Have you done the boat from Denmark to Iceland? Breakfast looks like dinner. Crazy. First views of Vladivostok look amazing. And then you're doing the lonnnnnnnn train trip? Wow. Thanks for the post!
Thank you so much Linda! ❤️
Haha, we carry a lot of different clothes 😣 We would loveeee to take that boat to Iceland! 🙃😍
So glad you enjoyed the video ❤️
Magic video 😍
Thank you so much, means the world! ❤️🙏🏼
Eli from Russia sent me here. Great content! The only ship I was on was the ferry from Felixstowe, UK to Zeebrugge on the Belgium coast. For a cargo ship, this one had accommodations I didn't expect. Great video. Safe travels!
Same and I thought the same about what on cargo ship aka if that on cargo ship what are Korean cruise ships like 😅
Thank you, Matt and Julia for your compliment! I'm proud to be a Filipino. Am your avid follower watching from Dubai. I liked all your video contents.
Thank you so much for watching 🫰🏼❤️
wow, this was great...BUT i'm so excited to see the train ride across russia!
So glad you enjoyed it! 🙌🏼
Love you guys. Well done going(back) to Russia - you show the truth in your vids and we appreciate it.
Thank you so much ❤️🫰🏼
That's a nice little reasonably priced ferry ship. I regret I didn't do this side quest while I was teaching a year in Jeongseon not far from Donghae. I guess I didn't know about it back in 2010. I look forward to seeing your trans Siberian train journey to Europe as that's probably not one for the US citizens. Thanks for showing us!
This reminds us of our ferry ride .It was about 4 hours from Thailand (mainland) to Koh Pan Yang). My partner is not a good sea traveler so we ended up on the main deck in the fresh air. Watching the views ( the sea views) of the waves or at least I was but not my partner so much. Thanks guys for your travel vloggs!!
Ohhh must’ve been beautiful though 😍 Thank you for sharing ❤️
Travel by ferry gives you a sense of scale of our world aided by the pedestrian pace of the trip, a train is more comfortable but a ferry seems more adventurous ✌️❤️🇬🇧
Really good way of putting it! 😍❤️
My ancestors left Russia via Vladivostok prior to the Red Army seizing the city, they boarded a ship bound for Australia. I’m interested to learn what happened to the city, I hear things were very difficult for a long time after the allies left and it was completely closed to foreigners.
Wonderful video👌🏼thanks for showing, whats traveling like …by🚢Greetings from a Dutch subscriber, by by boat hello:🚝!
Thank you so much! Really appreciate it 🥰❤️🙏🏼
I got a little teary eyed when you two slow danced on the deck. I love you guys! Safe travels!
Another stunning video. You're on your game plan. Do you guys experience sea sickness ? Thank you for connecting with us, Sending you much love from Richmond, Va.❤❤ Harriet, Jim and Yuki
Thank you so much guys! Really appreciate your support! 🥰 Lots of love ❤️
Fab journey, loved the disco! I have yet to hear either of you say you haven't enjoyed a country you have visited. Is there anywhere you wouldn't go back to? Looking forward to your next video.
Thank you so much! Haha, no countries we wouldn’t return to but certain cities for sure 😁❤️
@@MattandJulia yep, always a few of those!
congratulations for achieving your dream
Thank you for watching 🙌🏼❤️
I never knew that trip was available
I am so jealous! My goal is to travel across Russia one day. I travel vicariously through you both!
Can’t wait to share more of the journey with you John! 🥰❤️
Great😊
Thank you!! 🙏🏼❤️
200K subscribers! Amazing accomplishment! I remember back in the “old days” when you were at 10K! I’ve loved being on this journey with you both and all the other subscribers! Onward!
Hey Marc! ❤️ Just scrolling through the comments and saw this! Honestly, your support from those early days is such a massive reason we’ve made it to where we are currently! Thank you for believing in us and helping us build our dream!! ❤️🙏🏼
Interesting video. I loved Julia's comment about birds' freedom to travel without passports. It would be nice indeed if we could do the same. It reminds me of John Lennon's Imagine. One request, I hope you'll show us Vladivostok in your next video.
Oh we certainly will be!! Can’t wait to share it ❤️🫰🏼
Eine sehr interessante Reise! Ich wusste nicht, dass man von Südkorea nach Wladivostok reisen kann! 💚
Thank you so much for watching! ❤️🙏🏼
Ye are so cute together love your videos. But I was sea sick watching ye 😂😂
Haha, sorry about that 😁😅
another fascinating vlog guys, how did you know what you were eating, it looked good, wish i could sleep for 12 hours!
Thank you so much! 🙏🏼 Us too, that was the last time 💤😅❤️
I can`t wait to see your adventures during the train ride :) I hope I will have the opportunity to take the trans-Siberian train at one point in the future :)
Can’t wait to share them 🥰❤️
Nice and I would love to try it one day and even on an oil platform and stay there for a few nights and watch the stars in the middle of the night.
That would be insane 😍
@@MattandJulia it would be but one of a lifetime experience too.
я тоже считаю,что морские путешествия самые самые глубокие по впечатлениям! как вода за бортом)))
I love all your videos especially this one and also when you crossed the Baltic sea, I worked on ships for several years sailing all over the world. You are both so adoring, it reminds me of my wife and I, we were also so much in love, unfortunately she passed away and I am now living in her birth country (Austria). Keep up the beautiful work you are doing, looking forward to your next videos. Take care and stay safe.
Thank you so much, really appreciate it! Lots of love to you in Austria 🇦🇹❤️🙏🏼
May I suggest you boost you audio volume abit when editing and uploading.😊
We did, to the full 😊
Hello Matt and Julia! Thank you for sharing your amazing journey with us!❤ i v got so impressed with this ferry trip, that started to plan it for myself also. Didnt know there are any ferries there. I looked it up on google and it says there are no further sailings. Do you know by any chance if this because it is just a seasonal ferry run?
Thank you very much! ❤️ Ohhh not sure, it is worth emailing booking@dwship.co.kr to double check 😊
@@MattandJulia thank you
Completely missed this thanks to Elie
The best videos are when Matt & Julia are with her family in central Russia. The cooking they get uo to ....
I've always wanted to take thos ferry as part of a round the world trip when i retire.
Transsiberian to Vladivostok and then down to Korea and over to Japan.
I've always wanted to go to Vladivostok for some reason.
It is a fascinating city for sure, looking forward to sharing our thoughts in the next video ❤️
Wow. Great trip by the looks of it. The best I can claim is crossing Cook Strait on the ferry between the North and South Islands of New Zealand. But it's very scenic - when it is not living up to its reputation as the windiest maritime strait in the world! Did you have to go through Customs of some sort when you docked?
Oh wow! That sounds awesome 😍 so beautiful!
Yes we did, the Lee was an entire immigration building 😊
@MattandJulia don't know if different now aka last time I went to Moscow with wife was like 20 years ago. But if same as back then, I bet all paperwork for this route was fun :)
Food looked good
It was actually great 🥰
Want to take that route someday^*^
You are so lucky, as I was until I was in my mid 30's when I had an eating disorder, I later found that I was very intolerant to wheat gluten and so started my problems with eating out. Now in my late sixties I also cannot tolerate any dairy products, milk, cheese and any food that contains it. If I inadvertantly eat food that contains wheat gluten or milk I suffer at least 5 days of upset gut and a very sore backside. Lovely to see your travels and enjoy your food, I hope you don't develop the same problems as mine.
I must say that I am not very enthusiastic about the boat. I try to avoid them if I can. Despite that, several times a year I travel on the ferries that connect Buenos Aires with Uruguay, most of the time to the city of Colonia (one hour trip) and rarely to Montevideo (2.45 hours)
I look forward to your video from Vladivostok and I hope you also introduce us to the fourth passenger from hell on that train...haha. Love from Buenos Aires
Ahhh, it sounds weird but we are the same with flying, always try to avoid it if there’s another option 😅
Can’t wait to share the next couple of vids 😌and the train 🫣😉
Lots of love from us ❤️
@@MattandJuliaI love flying! by the way, i dont know if you care very much for numbers but Congratulation for reaching 200k, Although your site deserves much more, it will come!
