@@eetunimee3883 Yes, we have plans for a small one in the new cabin. Just a hatch in the floor. Bigger cellars under houses are hard to get a good climate in.
Why is it so important to be off the grid, so to speak?
Whether or not one lives in the city, dogs play a very important role in people’s lives; for example, seeing eye dogs, dogs for those with handicaps (emotional and physical), dogs for companionship, too. We have working dogs in the city, just different jobs than your jobs for your dogs. I think the country represents no confinement, at all, for city people, so perhaps that’s why city people were questioning the confinement of your dogs. Thank you for answering the questions about your dogs living area.
In answer to your question about how to wash clothes off grid. If you go to the CZcams video My Self Reliance, the man built his sauna with an area to put a washing machine in it. You may be interested in it.
People who say, "You're not living off the grid" need to spend a year living like you do to appreciate your situation and fortitude. God bless you all!

People do live like them and are fine. They have internet, electricity, etc and also have quiet and peace. No one is insulting them. But obviously, this is not off grid as they have electricity and internet. They are self sustained which is commendable for our environment. Many people in the city are also self sustained and should be commended for biking and running to work not polluting with cars. Yet, no one commends them for all they do for the planet living in small apartments and not having a polluting car.
Off-grid and homestead channels have always been hit hard by socialist/communist activists. They are not happy when people leave the working-class collective and work toward their independence. The strong individualist is their enemy.
Don’t worry about what critical people say. Your child have a happy and healthy life. I see another hand knit sweater.
I'm a knitter too so I notice all of Ivar's hand knitted clothing. He's one lucky little boy to have so many people to knit for him. He's going to be nice and warm this winter.
They need those knits for warmth, so practical.

As an American who lived in Sweden for four years, I was moved to tears by the strong emotions and vulnerable sincerity there was in the Patreon and video earnings discussion. For people unfamiliar with Swedish culture, it might not "translate" the same way and seem reserved, but from my experience that was a big display of feelings. It's evident how much it means and how happy you are to have this opportunity. I am in quarantine in Kazakhstan for almost a full year now, and watching y'all's videos soothes my homesickness for Sweden and gives me some nature to enjoy. I hope your channel just keeps growing and you can keep being home all together living this way you want to.

Hello Tova, Mathias, and Ivar, I am a 57 year old man who was born, raised in the city of San Diego, CA. First, let me tell you that its a beautiful situation that you have. Second, you owe no explanation of how and why you live this way! I was very fortunate to also have a father who grew up in the South Pacific jungles and learned to be self sufficient on what the land has to offer. My father taught me another way of life other than the city and all the burgers one could want. I developed much respect for our environment and the native people who live this way all their lives. Please, continue to grow, live and prosper throughout your many years!

its completely understandable that you don't wish to receive visitors at your homestead. I see the two of you as introverts and very private people. having visitors would interrupt the natural flow of your lifestyle and create too much stress psychologically and emotionally. I for one am grateful that you even share your life on youtube. thank you for that.

@@hunterhemingway lol! That is exactly what they think. They feel like because they see so much of their life through videos, they actually have a relationship with these people. What they don't understand, is that these people have no clue they exist. 🤣 Seriously though, when I heard them say people asked to visit them, I was shocked someone would even ask that. I wouldn't trust any stranger around my wife and baby. And what would they gain from the people visiting them? Nothing! Just some weirdo around, who could possibly murder them in the middle of the forrest.
I think you are wonderful people and I love what you say about animals. They hunt to eat just like us. We all have to share the plant to survive. I love all animals.

When people criticize you for not living a truly off grid life, I think they're conflating "off-grid" and "primitive", and you're right to point out that not being connected to the electrical power grid, city plumbing or any other common public commodity, that is, by definition, off-grid.

The people saying you don't live off grid are probably sitting in a heated 5 bedroom home with a tv playing in front of them, their laptop on their lap and their phone sitting beside them. I'm personally amazed at your lifestyle! Wow!

How people can say you don't live off-grid is beyond me. I think you explained it very well, no running water, electrical connection, gas piped in, etc. I truly admire your work ethic and how you live being so open with us all about what you do from day to day. I think Mysak and Malva are extremely lucky to have so much space to live in and be free and are so well trained. Watching Ivar playing with Malva was adorable. He was very vocal and is going to have a much better upbringing than a lot of children in this world.
I am proud to a Patreon and help you on your journey, I love the videos you put out and they give me a magical escape from this modern world we mostly live in. I just got around to watching this. I have been "off grid" , in the mountains, while hunting. Mathias, I watched your facial expressions, when you mentioned your entire income was from patreon. It seemed, to me, that your sense of pride was affected. That endeared me, even more, to you guys. You are a humble man. As a patreon donor, I can say, you earn that money. Never consider it a handout. I enjoy your video content and quality. I grew up on a dairy farm. We raised most of our food. We heated with wood. It's a LOT of work. To do all that, plus make these videos is Damn impressive. Keep up the great work.

So sensitively said, Jack Miller. Thank you for expressing your thoughts. I too just watched this today...and I noticed the same thing about them. I grew up in a ranching community, and though my family wasn't on a ranch, I worked on one on weekends that had morgan horses and siberian huskies the owners raised for shows. Those days were SO filled with just feeding and taking care of the horses, doing every day chores, etc. there was barely time to it down until evening. And yes, the huskies HAD to be kept in huge pens that allowed them to run around and play, because if let loose, they naturally wanted to run or hunt...As well, we also have an off grid cabin 2 hours away, and again, just hauling water and doing maintenance, takes up much of the day. The fact they are even making the videos, truly is amazing...oh, a thought on a washing machine alternative: growing up, we had an antique wringer washer. Perhaps an option from antique stores?... Matthias, please try and ignore the rude people that have nothing better to do, but be critical. You are obviously a good provider, and a loving husband and father. You should be very proud. :)
@@charismaticcreature7875 well people pay voluntarily for what they like or are interested in, you could see it as a service. its actually work what they are doing there and they are pioneers trying things out, making the experiment and share with and thereby teach the world how a different life is possible. so thats an honourable work in my view. everybody shall make its way, if it works out without harming anyone and then even brings benefits to the world, to me it seems perfectly fine!

love your videos....i am 72 years old and went off the grid 3 times....i know what it is like to drive 2 hours a day to a job and then have to spend an other 6 hours a day working on the homestead.and then 24 hours on the weekends....as we say in Canada life in the bush....back to the clearing....my grandma lived on a pre electricity farm in the bush.....she hated it.....dusk til don hard labour....in the evening...soft chores....knitting ....trimming oil lamps...soap making...etc...it took 3 to 4 weeks every spring to cut enough wood for the next year....using only axes and saws.....once again...dusk to dawn...then they had to do the farming.....or gathering....picking wild blueberries....with someone on guard for bears....or picking fiddleheads in the spring...these were considered holiday outings but you were still were expected to pick enough wild produce to last a year...then you needed to preserve all the food....canning....salting....smoking....drying...for fun you fished for trout or salmon or you hunted for moose dear grouse ducks and geese......eating bear meat ment you could not provide for your family ....they eat bear meat was an insult....i tried bow hunting....didn't like it....you can hit a deer with an arrow and it will run away and die in the forest....shoot a deer with a shotgun and it will go down.... the wounded flesh feed to your dogs and cats...the other 3/4 use to feed your self...life was hard....don't listen to the purists.....they have no idea about what going off the grid means....you guys are doing great....
Keep it up. You are living a life that people like me can only dream about. You're both living your dream, yet pragmatic about it. Not everyone has your opportunity nor the courage to make it a reality.

@@emisode fiddleheads are the sprouts of the eastern green fern....they are delicious but only grow wild....in new Brunswick people harvest them every spring.........they are a wild crop....they are sold in grocery stores until they sell out

normally I'd feel so overwhelmed by watching a 50 minute video, but listening to you guys is honestly so relaxing. It almost feels like I'm with friends in a cozy cabin talking about life.

I love how Ivar is way more interested in the wires and electronics than in his toy. Ignore the nasty people who accuse you of not being off grid; most of them are armchair adventurers. 🤣 I applaud how far you’ve come and I will continue to support what you do. As a farmer, I totally understand how many smaller projects can get in the way of getting the bigger project done. I also have many projects going on at the same time. Thanks for the videos.

I’m entitled to my opinion of them and their off grid lifestyle. The term “off grid” has many meanings just as the term “homesteader” has many meanings. The world is largely composed of shades of grey and not black and white. With the exception of mathematics and some physics, there is no right or wrong answer, just shades of grey for most everything. For my mom, the world was black and white, it was Barb’s way or wrong. She lived an unhappy life because of course nothing was Barb’s way. If you’re peeved at Utube vlogers who “show off” (your word) or better term “share” their lifestyle with the rest of us, I suggest that you stop watching them. Live your own life.

@@michelles3747 there’s really no such thing unless you are a hermit. According to Charismatic Creature’s definition, you would have to be totally independent of all outside services and goods. Even people who live in the Alaskan wilderness have float planes that deliver food, medications, etc. As a child, my family and I spent nearly every summer living on a small co-owned island off the coast of down east Maine. No running water, no electricity, no facilities, no w/d. We did have a propane refrigerator with a tiny freezer compartment and a propane stove/ oven. However, my parents did most of our cooking, baking and heating using the giant wood stove. We cut down, chopped and split our own wood. It was an all day affair to go to town for laundry or groceries. We were tied to the tide (18 feet during big spring tides and 14 feet during small Neap tides) and the weather. Weather could turn very ugly in a very short period and I recall several times when we were stranded ashore or worse handling a small open boat in rough water with difficult and dangerous navigational obstacles (rocks). After the first year, my mother wisely opted to scrub our clothes using an old washboard and basin. We had a dip well for drinking water and a rain water system for wash water. We used a sun shower system & a wash tub for bathes. I personally, consider this off grid, but others might not because of using a grocery store located 2 hours away each way via boat and auto. There are generally 2 full tides every 24 hours. You can only travel on the coming half to full tide and the first half of the waning tide. Fun times I tell you. I really miss those summers!!

I see nothing about cars here. I lived off grid in the 90s. I had a truck. I had an RV with a bathroom, electricity and running water. It was work to empty the black water, bring in barrels of fresh water and jugs of gasoline for the generator. I wish I could do it again.
This couple is fortunate to have family and help close by. That doesn’t negate their efforts to exist without having to pay utility companies, and live in a more thoughtful and deliberate way.
We lived with our 7 dogs and newborn baby in a big apartment and walked them 3 times per day... Our family always gave their opinions. I told them it all worked for us and for them as we are all family in our eyes and people can say what they want but they won't step in our shoes.

The close nit community you live in is exactly how man kind was meant to live. in small communities where everyone looks out for one another, their animals and family members .

Why not videos on line?… They like to shear their life style and shear their Beautiful experience. They are winners of this type of living. I've learned that there are lot's of ways to live. No way is perfect, and you just have to figure out what you want to do. You can live in city or in country. As long as you are efficient and live healthy, that is the key.
@@charismaticcreature7875 I don't really see the point when it comes to the land and the grandparents. Most people are given resources from the generation prior. Just like most families have involved grandparents, that's a pretty basic standard, I'd say. Who defined "independent" as "without provided land and without grandparents". I'll agree that they're not off the grid per se, considering they make use of some things, but if it came down to it, they could probably find ways to be in comparison to most other people, given they have a very 'close to off the grid' solution of living, haha.

There is a very large movement here in America where more and more people are leaving behind the urban life for a self sustaining one. Your videos are wonderful

Having lived in a cabin off the grid for only a winter in the Maine woods in the US... I can attest to you being off the grid. Nothing like waking up and having to use the outhouse when it is minus 20 degrees, and your water is frozen inside the cabin. I take my hat off to you for living this way.
Just to comment about the points on your dogs - your dogs are housed perfectly, are healthy and mentally sound, and your overall animal husbandry skills and considerations are above and beyond. Many people who consider dogs small replacement humans have irrational problems with allowing dogs to be the animals that they are. I'm glad you addressed those comments. I currently live in a suburban apartment with 2 cats and 2 dogs, and though we are outside A LOT and work with our dogs (hunting breeds) I long for the day that we will move to a situation more like yours, and the animals can be outdoors fulfilling their instinctual and long-bred needs more fully.
Shawn James at the youtube channel called "My Self Reliance" made a sauna with a green roof. He also uses a hand crank washing machine. His videos may interest you. Thank you for telling your story and sharing your life with us. You are very inspiring.
I enjoy Shawn's channels but he doesnt have the responsibilities of animals and a baby. He also has over a million subscribers and is not struggling financially at all. He lives by himself with a dog! His older children and wife aren't comfortable in his wilderness lifestyle.
No comparison to Mathias and Tova!
I also watch Mr. James' videos, though I would not suggest Mathias try his method of sauna building! That took a year and he didn't have a baby to care for while building it. I'll be happy to see the new house and root cellar up, however long it takes them.
@@earthangel8730 but good tips to share for idea purposes are not always bad.
When our children were babies, and we stayed up in the mountains in Norway, I used to put the diapers in cold, soapy water in a big pot on the stove before going to bed, and in the morning it would be coming to a boil. I would then rinse them out in the river, and hang them up to dry. They would be basically spotless and very clean, but it could be a 2-day process, depending upon the weather, of course.
By the way, I just used a wooden stick to stir and ‘plunge’ down into the boiling pot, but what you are using is a (toilet) plunger.

Oh, I recall my mother "boiling clothes" on the stove before we had a washing machine. We had a spinner to get more water out so the clothes would dry faster.
Freezing food year round - in Poland people were collecting deep frozen ice during winter and kept it surrounded by thick layer of saw dust - like 1 meter thick all around.
You are very loving parents to your sweet son. I appreciate the simplicity and rhythm of life. People think living off grid is uncomplicated. I think it can sometimes be challenging. I can't believe someone would complain about your dogs not being inside! You have a great place for them to stay, and you barely have room for yourselves in that cabin! I agree with you that it's way better to have a nice pen for them than to cram them in a tiny cabin.
I agree Mathias is right. Responsible dog owners... especially in the circumstances they live in. I have rescue dogs that can be problematic, we have to make sure our dogs are safe.
It's dogs with a purpose more than just to kill a human owners boredome, they have a good awareness and tells when people or animals are in close distance to the house, they have a winterfur made for wintertime climate and temperature, I have had 2 Greenlanddogs before and they didn't like to stay to long inside in the house 1-2 hours was enough för them to start to complain , they didn't even go inside their "doghouse" to sleep before the temperature went down to
-20 --> -25° Celsius
(-4° --> -13° Fahrenheit) ,
when it had snowed we usually found a hole in the snow were their noses breathed, first when it came to temperatures between-30°--> -42° Celsius ( -22° --> -43,6° Fahrenheit ) outside they seemed to appriceate staying in for a little longer periods but they absolutely wanted to go outside atleast 4-5 times even the coldest of days, I guess these dogs in the Talasbuan videos are some of the tougher ones in this climate, I would worry more about dogs in cities that don't have owners that can give them their needs fullfilled, the dogs needs not the owners, there is no regulation on how misstreated and neglected can be locked up with owners can't keep up with the needs of the dog, with that I mean a dog doing dog things like their wild roots tell them like sniffing interessting smells, listening and warning like wild dogs do in their familygrup, guarding the territory and the familymembers, these dogs also going to meet wild animals everyday probably when squirells and birds going to check whats left in the dogbowl, the dogs feets and legs also is spared from hard surfaces like concrete and asphalt that is not so nice for a dogs physical health neither in summer or winter.

@@anderspersson7084 I’m sure people who feel a need to “over explain” why they feel any breed of dogs should stay 24/7 outside don’t understand that eventually they will freeze to death. Yes, some breeds like to be outside more, however, NO DOG should be living outside in freezing temperatures - it’s simply wrong.

Much shorter life expectancy and more natural resources because not so many damn humans.

Hey you two! As someone completely reliant on the grid I can tell you: I'm very impressed by the beautiful personalities you two portray to be. It makes me very happy to see you pursue your plans with so much comittment and humbleness. You don't owe ANYONE an explanation as to why you do certain things. Just think about why you do what you do and how many people, including myself, look up to you and are thankful for the time and energy you put into sharing your lives. You're not forcing anyone to watch your content, you're kind enough to share it with us. So never doubt your intentions as long as they're pure and never take to the heart what someone, far less satisfied with their life, has to throw your way. You answer to nobody. That little Ivar is going to be a very active little boy. He is going to keep you both on your toes when he starts to walk. I don't understand those that criticize you saying that you are not off grid. My goodness people have RVs with more conveniences then what you two have. People go camping in huge motor homes with washing machines, dryers, air conditioning, full bathrooms, power plants, satellites, internet, big screen tv, etc. You are living a life many people would love to have but don't, because you are right, it is hard. We are so used to our conveniences. I live on a farm and I'm not off grid and I admire those that choose to live like this.
Have you thought of a Wind Turbine for additional power especially during winter?
And you are definitely "Off Grid" because you don't rely on any city or county power companies, not to mention you farm most of your own food and barter with other Farmers for the rest, so that's "Off Grid" in my book.👍❤️
Wind Turbines need to be quite big if they should generate any energy. But on the otherhand, waterpower is NOT a realistic alternative here!
It is expensive to install wind power generator
yes they had the little windmills on cottage roofs in Finland when we visited friends and relatives, the power was stored into batteries (they looked similar to car batteries)

My husband and l have driven in a small VW bug and camped along the fjords from Oslo to North Cape, Finland, Lappland, etc in 1973 when we were about your age. I met my Swedish husband in Los Angeles in 1969, got married at Allhelgona Kyrkan in Stockholm in 1971, traveled all over the world. We are now retired in Los Angeles to be close to our daughter and her family. I am fascinated with your life in the wilderness and trying to make the best living with nature. You have done excellent so far, guided by your positive attitude and resilience. Please know that all vloggers have bashers and all you need to do is ignore them. Bashers come from a place of ignorance, negativity and bad manners. People who have so extremely "humanized" their dogs could be causing a lot of anxiety for the dogs. I agree, dogs in a cramped, loud city is what seems unhealthy as opposed to them being outdoors with dry, comfy spaces.

Hello from Finland. It was nice to find out, that you both have been studying "practical arceology". I have studied "primitive techniques" for a three years course. :) It is very interesting to watch your videos, as me and my partner bought a year ago a traditional Finnish country house, so to speak, with no water coming in. Electricity we do have. We like to heat with wood though and some times cook too. We have a sauna outside (no electricity) and that is a saviour. Get a sauna, folks! :) No more shivering when washing from a bucket. Also washing clothes is easier there.
We still have a normal boring apartment, but we are dreaming of moving into our old log house. Tomorrow, I'm going to a school of traditional house building or restauration and see, if I can start studying there.

Mathias, for charging big 12V home rechargeable battery it is safe to just connect additional PV panels directly to your 12V battery. Few panels can be connected together - parallel connection - all panels plus and battery plus together and all minus together. The only concern is to disconnect charging when voltage on battery rises to 14-14.5 Volts. It is safe to use power while panels charging battery.

I moved to the mountains of Italy for the peace and quiet and for my health, to grow some food, drink uncontaminated water and breathe better air. I'm 72 now. At first, when I moved here 8 years ago, it was so quiet at night my ears would be ringing. After about 6 months of "urban recovery" haha, now I only hear my heartbeat when I am going to sleep. In the summer, we have owls who hoot at night, and I can hear the stream in the distance, but the almost perfect silence for me is completely regenerating and inspiring to my soul.
May I make a suggestion? Sweden has so many unique crafts and products. Perhaps while you are waiting to be able to sell your own products, you can partner with various local artisans and sell their products for a certain percentage of the price, a sort of handling fee. It would not take so much time, because you could create a merch website that is designed so that the maker of the products ships them out, and you just manage the finances and transfer the agreed-upon amount to each artisan. It would bring in some money for you both, and would help suppport craftspersons in your area and country.

@@Talasbuan I know I would buy a knitted hat or sweater, or carved wood art, pottery or anything like that. So I'm sure many others would too. It could be like a passive income for you. Not totally passive, but pretty much if you don't have to do the shipping. Just keep the website updated with photos of new items etc. And then you would also have a community of artisans to add to your lives. :-)
For future reference, you might want to consider a work/travel program. You provide room & board, and in exchange, people provide labor. A bonus for workers is they are immersed in the local culture, learning the language, and skills. You can have as many or few people as you like, as long or as short of time as you like. A lot of places have severe restrictions visitors have to follow. They are vetted and have to fill out applications explaining why they want to work at your homestead. There can be long waitlists sometimes. It might be nice to have extra hands during the summer. Just something to think about.

Really everyone has to think it over how to live in a more sustainable way.. small villages and rural areas get abandoned, not everyone is taking the courage to move out. I am in North Carolina, USA. As far as I am concerned, you are off the grid - comparatively speaking. If I were you, I would not care what anybody says about whether or not you are off the grid. You live as you choose to live,and that is a blessing. With that comes peace. The two of you are perfectly matched. It seems quite wonderful to me.

Not many people can understand actually building your own home without contractors. Our home was built by my husband, with the only outside help we had, was the concrete foundation and septic. We know every nook and cranny. Living in the wilderness is God's gift to us! I love your channel!

Hm, so that was really interesting to me, as we are living off-grid as well right now. Just thinking about your solar situation. We had absolutely no idea (still don't) what we were doing when it comes to electricity. It was fairly important to us, since our computers are the way we make a living. So we bought a battery, two solar panels, a controller, a pure sine inverter and matching cables. That was a mission in itself. But we've connected it all up and it works wonderfully to power a laptop and a desktop pc for about 30h when the battery is full (oh, and a hand blender, which is incredibly handy!). It would not be enough to run a fridge, but we have neighbours with a bigger system that run a fridge and a washing machine off-grid, also their computers and lights. Theirs is meant to work all through winter as well. You really need the battery storage if you want to go long stretches with little sun.
I guess you'll find as long as you keep your system extensible it will improve your live greatly. I think that means you go with a rather large controller (which could be expensive) to be able to add solar panels and/or batteries (don't quote me on that) as you need them. So you spent money on it bit by bit. If you keep the system close enough to your hut you can run 12V lights, which will probably make all the difference! And then you can go ahead and extend your system until, at some point maybe, you can run a fridge/freezer full time and a washing machine (provided you have the water storage to support that). That's the dream, anyways :D I'd be happy to provide more information if needed, but I bet you have a lot of input anyhow. Good luck, you're doing amazing work! It's just one day/step at a time :)
