He scraped dust off his ferrorod to use as a guaranteed firestarter and then made a proper strike to get sparks igniting the ferrodust he scraped off. That's what made the intense flame that surpeised you.
As a kid in Norway we used to be outside all the time regardless of temperature. Remember we did a 20 kilometer ski trip in -25c. It was miserable but gratifying. I think anyone in Finland, Norway, Canada and all the other countries far north know the satisfying feeling of heating up inside after extreme cold.
Yes. We used to walk long distances to school in every weather, every temperature. Looking back on this, it probably wasn't the best idea though. lol
kunne ikke sagt det bedre selv🤌
Yeah live in north of sweden and use to cold weather in the winter time, coldest i experience was when i did my basic military service in the early 90´s and on a exercise we sleept in tent and its was -43c it was real cold and miserable 🥶. Funny how big of a diffrence in temperature mountin´s make was at NATO exercise Cold Respons in Norway 2010 when we left Trældal in Norway it was -7c and drove to Abisko in Sweden it was -37c in the evenig and like 65km between the spots :)
Thank you for serving from one Veteran to another. I am located in Maine similar conditions as the guy featured in video although temperatures are more extreme. With regards to survival and animals in a camping/bugout application like this, the best protection is Fire and having the fire positioned in front and how he used the root wall as a backing is one of the first things they train you in Boyscouts when your 8 years old especially when you live in States that have extreme conditions like Maine can have.
Love that your getting into bushcraft. My number one, watching on CZcams is bushcraft and second is military. Super pumped to see ur videos on the subject. I hunt big game in Colorado and I love to learn more of the “old” style of living. Cheers! Thank u for ur service! ❤
Cant wait to watch your bushcraft videos. They are my favorite videos to watch. I love going out and doing this myself and teaching my kids about outdoors and survival
In this video, the area he is in have big Black bears, Mountain Lions, Timber Wolves, and occasionally Grizzly bears, and also big moose…
Meese probably gonna leave him alone tho and the bears are just sleeping.
This guy is good. So is the channel LoneWolf. He has some really good camping videos both with and without tents
Let me look that up too bro thanks
@@RyanForrest1664 Lonewolf902 is his channel
Lone wolf just tests camping equipment
@@foxconNI He does more than just that. Got plenty of videos where he doesn't use a tent at all
There's a channel called field days who's a survivalist but he goes to deserted islands all over the world, his recent videos have strayed from full on survival but some of his older content is absolutely awesome I think you would enjoy ryan
Loving these videos was big into bushcraft here in the UK a while ago. Part of Notts bushcrafters but life and work took over and got rid of most of gear but these are making me really want to chuck a tarp and hammock in the bergen and get out there again. Keep them coming definitely a new subscriber.
He's in Alberta. I grew up there. Bears are sleeping so the main animals to watch for are wolves, moose, cougars, bobcat, lynx, wolverines. As long as you have a rifle, a shot in the air will scare most things off
The fire would keep most critters away
But canada doesn't allow guns so how will he fire a rifle?
@@mujahidkhan816 Canada certainly allows guns. Otherwise i'm fucked
@@HeresMinx well I've heard otherwise
@@mujahidkhan816 you’ve heard wrong. We are certainly allowed guns, however there are a lot of guns that we are not allowed to have. We can not own military style firearms, anything that is fully automatic, or handguns. You are also limited to a select amount of rounds per magazine depending on the fire type. (centre fire, rim fire, shotgun etc etc) Other than that, we are mostly free to own however many firearms you want of whatever type.
There are lots of little rules though. You cannot have them in your vehicle, if you do they need to be trigger locked, and the ammo needs to be in a separate part of the vehicle. When they are in your home they either need to be double locked and away from ammo, or trigger locked and in a locked gun safe.
I own 16 different guns and i have them all on my property.
love your take and insight on this videos! cant wait to watch you do your own adventure. much love from argentina
Ryan firstly thanks for your service protecting us, came across your channel early today and have watched several of your vids, loving them!!
Hello mate, Glad to have you her my friend
"Nothing fancy,'' I was waiting to see what the master bedroom was going to look like, very impressive.
Where did the outdoor boys reaction videos go
These videos are brilliant. Can't wait to see you do it yourself buddy. Quality channel!!!!!!!!
Just wanted to take a moment to say even as an American, thank you for your service and sacrifice for your country! You have an incredible channel and I cant wait to see future content!
awesome tip about the heat retaining wall, will keep that in mind.
You bet!
Just found your channel. I love it! I just got back from camping outside in New Hampshire yesterday. It was 14 °. Tropical compared to this! Really enjoying your channel. Keep up the good work brother!
My friends channel is called it's good in the woods. If you're into cooking in the woods, you will definitely love it. We eat like kings.😂
GORP = Peanut M&Ms with dried fruit, granola or other nuts is great power food and tasty. Eaten on the move. Wooden matches AND lighter dipped in parafin wax. Old pieces of news paper dipped in wax for firestarters, birch bark peeled off (just a little or you will kill the tree). Yep, grew up in Vermont and was in a Mountain Infantry Unit (National Guard) for 19yrs after 8 yrs Active Duty. Too much fun and horrible to stay inside all winter
I do the m&ms thing when out mountain biking ,great quick energy boost and doesn’t take up too much space
Tastes great too! I never go in the woods without enuf for 3 days and thats just a day pack. Love the outdoors. Enjoy your biking!@@1eyrey
It may look like he struggled to get the fire started but he actually got it started first strike. He was shaving bits of the steel off to help with the fire starting. The sparks are hot enough to set fire to the steel dust, which the burning steel has a better chance of setting fire to frozen kindling.
At least I believe that is what he did. It makes sense.
Animals to thing about in the winter in Canada: coyotes, wolves and cougars. There are lynx and bobcats too, but they're smaller than cougars.
you forgot moose
Cant wait too see you out there urself. Im sure they will do well
love all the uploades
Wow you are pumping out the content! Love it man!
More to come!
I like the survival/camping stuff, too. A nice addition to the content.
I did that sort of thing as a boy scout when I was about 10, if properly built a snow/debris shelter is quite toasty inside.
Me too. Battle Lake Scouts. We were all farm kids anyway so basically lived outdoors
@@scipio7837 Wasn't a farm kid but grew up rural, making things like snow caves and playing "survival" is what we did for fun during winter so when boy scout camps came around it wasn't much different than what I was used to, just with people I wasn't used to being around for the most part.
The fire got sparked because he scrapped some of the flint onto the tinder as you see him grinding down the flint
Biscuits brown ohh those where the days 😅😂
Haha
You should give Steve Wallis a watch. He does stealth camping videos and I think getting tactical perspective on what he does would be really interesting.
Steve is another favourite of mine
Buddy was in Northern Alberta, so yea he had to worry about Wolves, Bear, Moose, Cougars et cetera, but they don't like fire too much.
In North America, it's really just bears you need to worry about.
Black bears are most places, but they want your food and are generally very shy.
Brown bears are why you carry bear mace.
Those should be fast asleep for a couple months now.
You've obviously never run into a cougar or wolverine. Wolves and to a small extent coyotes in groups are no joke either.
wow! that's smart to use the soil in the root ball to create dry ground.
Anything below 60 is cold to me 😂 Like 3 years ago or so I believe it was hearing the Dallas area. Texas got down to minus something like -8 Fahrenheit. We had power, but our meter base caught fire. So that was fun.
I watch all the same people you do...but I enjoy your take on it. Subscribed.
Kusk does great videos, i love his trapping series.
Hard tack and jerky are pioneer/ mountain men food. The Royal Navy and US Navy would feed the sailors with it before canned goods. When it became ridden with insects, dropping a cracker in one's coffee would not only soften the cracker, but also cause the weevils to float out.
@3:17 cool to see a crowned spine on that traditional scandi, no point in having a 90 if you have a dedicated scraper. I'd rather not have any hot spots on my knife
I'm Really enjoying these video's. Please keep it up. Thanks
Where I live we had one chilly winter -27© in the city it was, I was freezing with freaking loads of clothes, cant imagine -36 out there, plus the wind it makes it even colder.
Candle Lantern, Hot Jello & Dried Soups. UV glasses, particullary if you are using optics (U go snowblind much faster), batteries next to your body, lightly salt your water and dont fill canteens all the way (they will explode if the water freezes), single file only as you are easy to track unless its snowing, pine trees help with concealment from air and ground and offer a fighting position as the base is usually open, packed snow can stop bullets, wire and sticks around smoke grenade, stop after moving 20 minutes after a start to let people shed layers and when you stop, get people in their bags quickly, take your boots etc in a wet weather bag into your sleeping bag with you, showshoes help as a shooting platform if firing an MG from bipod, cardboard from ration boxes for firing from a tripod etc., etc!
Where did all the Outdoor Boys vides? they were awesome!
Another channel that’s not too bad to Corporal’s corner
ryan you should react to magnus midtbo, he's a pro climber but does tons of collaborations with special forces and military from around the globe showing what their trainings like
Debris shelter/ leaf huts not only keep the wind out, they keep the heat in. Some are just big enough to accommodate one person laying down. If you don't have a fire just pile leaves and debris to capture and retain body heat.
With that being said, I guess I can expect and look forward to seeing your personal Alaska bushcraft series!
What he was doing with the fire rod is scrape some of the metal off before the rapid scrape for the spark.
Just over across the Atlantic in Newfoundland we have similar weather in regards to cold rainy days.. But also the frigid snow days in the wintertime! And being on an island in the North Atlantic, Wind/ damp windchill make for some crappy weather.. In western Canada where this guy is the weather is a lot drier and a lot less wind.. much more manageable in my opinion.. nonetheless camping out overnight in -30C is badass for sure! Cheers!
The thing about the meat and crackers that are non-perishable, you could easily bring a little jar of honey butter and make those things absolutely delicious. Otherwise though, I love Riley Kusk. One of the best traditional bushcrafters out there.
Thanks for your service ❤
I am enjoying your new video reactions of the people surviving in the wilderness. I would love to see you do a collaboration
Usually in winter in Canada you are fairly safe from bears as they mostly are sleeping in a sort of hibernation. Wolf and cougar attacks are extremely rare. Polar bears are only in the far north where there are no trees. Winter is probably the safest time to be out camping like that (at least from animals).
Hey Ryan, Outdoor Boys and Kusk Buscraft are my favorites. They really sleep in their shelter. That's what i like about them.
I have been watching this guy's channel for 5 years now he has another channel where he does trapping with his father his gloves and his pants are waxed that way they don't get wet and it helps keep him from getting cold and hypothermia. His father and his grandfather have been trappers in the upper Canada area for many many years they've taught him a lot of his survival techniques
Predators tend to stay away from fires. I had bears on the bottom of my property at night with a fire going and he never came close to bothering me. He weighs close to 700 Lbs. Just make sure to keep the fire going when they're close.👍
Hard tack and dried salted smoked meat are traditional Canadian/US trapper backcountry food. It’s calorie rich and packable. The only thing missing is pemmican, a Native American food quickly adapted by settlers.
Also TA Outdoors is really good as well for bushcraft videos and tips & tricks.
would love to see you do videos like these think they would be very interesting
This British guy is awesome wish he came to camp in Canada wilderness.
We Canadians learn survival skills at an early age considering we all grew up in igloos! ;-)
You had an igloo, wow had to settle for a quinzee. Lucky... lol
Love Luke! Been watching for years and in one of his episodes he talks about how he was a DUI defence attorney in the lower 48 and his wife is a children's book author and illustrator
He also grew up in Alaska which has taught him a lot about his survival tactics
Did this video get swapped? Its not luke from ODB and now i cant find any ODB react vids on ryan forrests channel@@Jmzeus1820
This video isnt Luke from ODB. And for some reason i cant find any ODB react videos on this channel. I was just watching one yesterday. Did they get removed?
@@vdzrussell yeah I know it's a reaction to Luke's video from odb. I don't understand what you're asking?
@@vdzrussell I was wondering the same thing... Maybe they were.
To make the hardtack better just take one bullion cube and soak hardtack in it, softens it and gives it some flavour.
From the NWT, -50°c this January.
Love the quality content it is great insight, if you're looking for a way to improve make sure to listen back on your edits make sure the audio balance is good. Be sure to listen on some good headphones and a mobile device should be good enough
🇬🇧⭐🏆💪
Thank you for sharing
I always wondered how you managed your exertion, work, sweating, then stopping and your clothes are wet and getting extremely cold later.
I ice fish in the U.P. Michigan, coldest night was -40f. We had a tent and fire set up on the lake. It was a full moon night and gave off so much light you could see the tree shadows on the snow. Didn't need a light because the moon was that bright. I did this when I was in my 40's, now 62 not sure if I could still do it. My blood thinners would be a massive disadvantage. Truly enjoyed your review, you should try it while you're still young.
I agree that cold and damp is almost as bad as 30 degrees.
Here in the UK in the midlands the coldest i remember it getting was around December 2012 or around that time, i went camping and it was -14C the coldest ive ever been in my life, was fun though :)
that was quick, i bet you couldnt wait a minute to upload the next one
Different channel, different style. Lets see
oh wow, i love the attention to your viewers, and i love the regular uploads@@RyanForrest1664
Alberta has Wolves , Grizzly Bears and Cougars. Usually the bears are hibernating however they do come out sometimes during the winter.
Yes sir the cold and wet or damp is a bummer trying to survive outside
He scrapes the fero rod to get particles first; it's these particals that will catch the spark.
I think you would like Age of The North as well. He's a very young man in Scandinavia who does the same thing.
He makes some security mistakes but still very cool.
Like the new stuff, thanks Ryan 👍
Thanks mate. Your name is the exact same as my old sgt haha
@@RyanForrest1664 That's pretty cool. I do believe it is an English last name. You should check out ovens rocky mountain bushcraft. He's a Canadian survivalist. I enjoy his videos as well.
most animals in canada hibernate for the winter so hes fairly safe, the biggest concern for him would likely be wolves and coyote's which are both fearful of fires
I'm a Canuk and he definately has bears, wolves & cougars around.
I believe Kusk Bushcraft lives in Alberta, CA. In one of his videos he found tracks made by wolves that came close to his camp one night.
Definitely would like to see you doing some outdoor vids. Right up your alley. Hooking up with Luke would be badass. You'll be awesome Ryan. Keep it up.
i'm in Orange County California, it's going to be 58 degrees tonight. if i was going to sleep outside, I think I would put on long pants and a jacket. love your vids!!!
Animals tend to have a natural aversion to fire and the smell of smoke.. one of the reason for the fire is to also keep animals away.
I'm from north Idaho. Most predators hibernate in the winter time. Snow usually gets to deep for wolves to walk in. If you watch enough of The Outdoor Boys, Luke will tell you the most dangerous animal in winter time is the moose. But that is when you find em on the trail, they don't come looking for food when you cook.
Would be brilliant to see you going out for overnights and some bushcraft, enjoying the channel!
Big cats, wolves, coyotes, badgers, and Wolverines. Most everything stays away because of the fire.
At 15 yrs old I stepped outside in -17F night in a Tshirt and shorts. 🤷 didn’t bother me, I was just working out for a few hours and the air was very still.
Very cool video.
Can't wait to see you're survival videos when you put them up.
Are you going to do all the talking during the video, or are you gonna do like all the talking during the video or doing most of the the talking after awards like it was someone else's video.?
Great reaction video. I would add a slight adjustment to your comment of a reflector behind the fire. Wood is a terrible reflector but it is a great wind blocker so you should plan your system around that. The tradition of wood reflecting heat has been debunked many times from science and actual testing but it definitely helps to block wind. That tree root backstop is definitely not going to get warm any time soon but there'll be no wind coming through that. He scraped the ferro rod slowly several times to build shavings so they light once the sparks fly.
I don't know if you ever watched the show Dual Survival, it was one of the many tv shows created after Les Stroud really created the whole "Survival show" genre with Survivorman. Anyway, Dual Survival featured an ex-military outdoorsman named Dave Canterbury, I always thought he was a pretty cool dude with a lot of knowledge. He's the exact type of guy you describe yourself as: pure military and strategy mindset, only thinks about efficiency and getting results, not comfort. He has been offering survival courses and has his own youtube channel, he might be worth looking up if you're interested in this field of knowledge.
That being said, Les Stroud was the OG when it comes to surviving alone in the wilderness. His whole thing was being dropped off in the middle of nowhere, by himself, and he does all the filming on his own and then meets up with his crew several days later and they edit it all into an episode. You could do an entire reaction series just watching episodes of Survivorman and commenting on them. He talks about the practical needs of survival, shows how to build shelter and secure food, and talks about the need to keep focused on tasks and have some time to enjoy the little things like tea or a tasty treat so you don't go insane once you start getting really hungry and tired.
The weather does get bad here in the UK. The other week I heard that storm Isha blew a womans umbrella inside out in the West Country and some bins went over in the Midlands...Our thoughts and prayers are with those affected.
Is there a Gofundme? lmfao
Is this a joke?
joe robinet is one i love watching
Those look like flannel lined carharts ...( heavy canvas pants with a heavy flannel lining )
3:51 thought the same was wounder if the fire starter did not work haha
You could watch -60F/-51C Winter Camping in Hot Tent from Outdoor Boys next
some dudes work on cars for fun, some dudes head to the rec center to play a sport, and then there's the dudes that say "nah i wanna see if i can survive in the harshest crap imaginable."
Where I live here in Canada it gets cold I do this in the back yard. But I want to build some wooden structures out there where no one else goes.
I will be impressed when you join them in a video within the weather that they are overcoming. Keep up the great videos.
There are also videos on how to make Pemican. First nation survival food
Dang don't tell me Luke had the Outdoor Boys reactions taken down :/ Bummed those aren't available anymore..
19:45 hey ryan I really like that idea. when you start doing bushcraft videos. you should definitely show us the temperature in your camp and out of camp so that we can get a better feel of the atmosphere. I think that would be really cool
I’ll be doing that in the future! Scrape your flint into your tinder a number of times to deposit some dust before you actually strike the flint.
Yeah love this stuff
I'm going to take a guess and say that "trainers" are tennis shoes? When I was in boot camp we called them "go fasters" for a few reasons. Obviously you can move quick and nimble with tennis shoes compared to boots and the other one my drill instructors said was because they get worn out faster than boots hence the go faster name
I'd really like to see you get out into the wilderness and do some bush craft camping. And like you said, you no Lossr anger need to think/act tactical so have some with it and eat real good and be as comfortable as you can. Would also love to see you collaborate with Luke from outdoor boys and km sure if you're ever in Alaska or he's in UK then he wouldn't be more then happy to collaborate
I just found your channel. I see you like Luke from Outdoor Boys! I've watched his videos for a couple years! He currently lives in Virginia I believe but he was raised in Alaska. He and his family are Mormon or LDS I believe. He did his 2 year missionary trip in Japan. And they travel all over the world and have done videos of their travels. He hasn't been in the military. He is self taught in his knowledge of survival and Bushcraft. He was a lawyer for years but has done so well his CZcams channels that he no longer practices law. He was a criminal defense attorney. I love watching his videos and it my children and I's Saturday morning routine to watch his new videos! He is a nice guy and has done videos with other CZcamsrs so I believe he'd love to do one with you! I'll be watching to see if you guys do! Good luck! From a new subscriber Erica Williams!
Not any more lule had his lawyers threaten Ryan not to use outdoor boys video for reaction video.
