  • Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are actually back on ‪@darealkosmo‬ 's server to help him and ‪@DapperEcho‬ run a huge train up to the iron mine! The path to the iron mine is pretty insane so we're actually using a triple engine train for this in order to have enough power to make the entire trip!

Hey kAN, just saw the new video and heard your question about unsecured loads. I am by no means an expert but here you go:
Open freight cars of this era typically used high strength chains with a tension bar that, once the load was on and the chain set at either end, the bar would be pulled down and locked in place to secure the load.
Hoppers, because they hold heavy cargo, are generally open but in some cases a tarp or a cap is placed on the cars and tightened down to prevent water from entering or debris from the load flying out.
Tanker cars generally have what are called 'flow breakers' (interior walls with small openings at the top so that a steady controllable flow, like the waterfall of a fish tank, is maintained) similar to fire engines that keep the liquid cargo from completely sloshing forwards or backwards all at once and potentially derailing the car.
Boxcars are pretty much stacked as organized as they can using pallets, tying the cargo to said pallets using ropes or medium duty chains, stacking them so that there is as little movement (shifting) as possible, then shutting and locking to doors to prevent stowaways and train jumpers (often known as 'hobos') from climbing aboard.

When it comes to a lead locomotive connected to multiple units (locomotives) to pull freight the group of units are considered a consist. A consist can contain any amount of units ranging from 2 up to 10+ and the leader controls the rest of the units that are "cut in."
You cut in a unit by connecting the 2 "big air" hoes and the 6 "independent" hoses with each other and turning the corresponding cut-in valves to provide air to the breaks in order for all the units in the consist to apply their breaks at the same time. After the air is cut in you connect each MU cable that's in-between each unit in order for them to "share the power." older units will have a valve in the cab that will have the "cut-in trail" and "cut-in lead" ability which basically turns over control to the lead unit if it's on "cut in trail" otherwise the more modern units will have the option to make the unit a leader or part of the trail on the computer in the cab. If the unit is supposed to be in trail then the automatic break will be in HO (handle off), the throttle will be in idle, the reverser will be removed from the control panel, and the breaks will be released on the independent break.
There are remote controlled units that Union Pacific uses but they are rarely- if ever used (at least that's what I was told). I'm not exactly sure if Canadian freight locomotives are different, I've only worked with Union Pacific locomotives along with a few Mexican freight locomotives, but that's basically my explanation. We don't use remote controls, modern freight locomotives act more like computers where the lead unit in the consist can control everything that's important in the trailing units, truthfully even older models act the same way even with out a computer system in them- (as a side note the leader can also control units that are in the same positions that you guys were in- a unit up front a unit in the middle and unit in the back when it comes to pulling cars). This is all just based off of the training I've been doing for the past few weeks as a MSO at UPRR, I finished mover's school like 2 weeks ago and am practicing for my evaluation.

Love the detailed explanation! Just a few questions:
      1) How does the lead unit control other units in the middle or at the back of the train? Are there cables running through the cars or are they controlled wirelessly?
      2) What does the 'generator field' switch do, and why is it turned off in the trailing locomotive? Just something I was wondering about the Train Sim World 2 videos I've watched.

    • @UbinTimor
      @UbinTimor Před 2 lety +3

@@pranavghantasala6808 units get their power and air through cables in the freight cars just as you said. unfortunately American freight locomotives aren't advanced enough to use wireless energy links or anything like that weather that's a money issue or just a development issue, I don't really know- I guess UP lives by the mantra "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."
The generator field switch is what powers a locomotive. It basically allows the diesel generator to power up the electric engines in order for the locomotive to move.

I'm sure I'm not going to be the first person to suggest this however it makes sense if the back person would be at something like 15 constant, and middle 20, and the front guy will ramp between 22 and 100. As the front to pulled it takes weight off the other sections making those easily able to be pulled by the other engines which are at they're respective amounts.
This literally allows the guy at the front to control the entire speed and doesn't need the other two to keep changing, it's just a constant power adder coming from the back two.... I think that would work well.

First remote controlled locomotive was the GWR autocoach in the UK in 1904, they coach had a cab in it with mechanical linkage to the hooked up steam locomotive. You could link multiple autocoaches together for a longer train but this was disfavoured due to the tolerances, they preferred putting the locomotive between 2 autocoaches instead. GWR ran these things until 1954. Of course this was passenger rail.

Derail valley is a great alternative to railroads online that supports VR natively. Only main difference is that you can't build rails and rent your engines but it has propper steam train physics (including the reverser not stuck at 100% all the time) and same tactile feel of pulling levers and using gauges. It has working speedo though, which is useful.

Tempted to suggest trying to solo-operate a double-Betsy (hopper or bulkhead car between them). Their combined tractive effort isn't much more than a Heisler or Class 70, so even a back-to-back tandem shouldn't be snapping too many links. Essentially the second Betsy would be running "mid" with the lead betsy in a short 2 or 3-car lead (using the heaviest sandwich-cars you've got in order to prevent them from bucking off the track).
Variations of Double-Betsy being Twin-Porter (tier 2 porters for more fuel), Turbo-Porter (Betsy-Porter with Betsy in lead) and Port-eureka (Eureka running lead but a Porter or Betsy doing the heavy-lifting on starts/hills and stealing firewood from the Euraka)... Would probably get kinda fun if you have a PortEueka running short 4-hopper lead to a Turbo-Porter pair pulling a max load of lumber and only 3 people on the server (Front Operator, Mid-Operator, and designated fire-monkey/switch-handler).
Tractive effort: 23,950; Loco-weight: 113,100 Lbs Cost: $11,600 (Although the first Betsy was free, so $8700) Tier 3
    Equiv Class-70 tandem-pull: Tractive Effort 23,380; Loco-weight: 254,520 Lbs Cost: $8600 Tier 5
Equivelent Heisler tandem: Te: 23,380; Wt 144,690; Cost $11,300; Tier 4
    (A Porter-Eureka pair can probably still out-pull a Heisler)
Granted, once you've got a Hiesler, can pretty much *not* double-Betsy anymore, but just figured I'd give an idea on how to maximize Betsy-usage in the game. Mostly so you can gain credits restocking firewood depots by burning through cordwood like a fiend.

I don't know how it is in America but in Holland 1 short whistle is regulator off for other engines so the font engine had the main control, usually before braking so the other engines don't keep pushing. 2 short whistles is regulator back on, anything else is just as warnings for things like crossings except for 5 short whistles is panic panic danger danger and usually emergency brakes, but also a signal to the guard to come up and see what's wrong.
In my volunteering I have had one service as fireman where we towed a engine with malfunctioning brakes back to the depot. But since he could still run just fine we used these signals so they could be at the back helping with the now extra long train.
When shunting (or switching) the signals are different then it's 1 for forwards or 2 for backwards, but since shunting/switching basically never happens with two engines, braking is not defined and these are just warnings to the people near so they know witch way the engine is going.

Usually on freight trains, the Conductor and Brakemen are the same person. On passenger trains, there are 3 people for all roles.
My point is that Brakemen use Car lengths and Feet to couple trains. So for Example: 3 Cars… 2 Cars…. 1 Car… 10 Feet… 5,4,3,2,1 Good! Then they hook up air hoses, let the engine build up the brake pressure and release handbrakes on cars once it’s full

With the physics issues from directly coupling two engines together, and the derailing / decoupling of the car in front of you when you’re coasting, it seems like pulling an engine is much different than a car.
You might want to see if always using like 1 or 2% regulator for the trailing engine would prevent that by giving it less to pull (really, less likely-untested behavior for the physics engine to have to deal with).

Auto loader may get me to play again. I didn't buy this to play load a train sim. Auto loader, spin track piece before placing, auto repeat same track I'd settle with holding shift. Place track and foundation same time with auto cutting trees. A more interactive map like placing preplanned track locations and pinpointing objectives. Give me most of these and I'm back at it. They are also going to need goals beyond just getting to all the locations, like maybe an AI competition. Or have a world map to compete to be the best like Risk. I feel like it's a novel with one page finished.

at approx 9:04 the whistle you are reffering to is a railroad crossing I don't believe there are any wistles for when you are approaching a tunnel. two long whistles combined with a short and long are sounded at every railroad/road crossing (unless a city has said not to)
