    Yeah buddy, great find! I know the early ones got bad press, and usually deserved it. But, they can be made run well. You won't see much spray coming out the exhaust on this one, but replace the water pump anyway. Some good news, these early ones did not have the upper water tube grommet issues like the later ones! The powerheads and gearcases on these engines are very durable!

    I have a 1975 9.9 that I cleaned the carb put new plugs in and changed the impeller on last year. Now it won’t start. I have the lower unit off at the moment I don’t know if that is effecting it (back pressure and what not). I’m thinking it’s the points. Can you send me in the right direction?

      Get a open gap spark checker or in line neon spark checker. With the open gap spark checker you should see a nice fat blue spark with the spark checker with it gapped at 1/4 inch. The gap checker is about 6 to 8 bucks at an auto store. I have a videos how to check the coils and wires and ignition for a 1968 6hp Evinrude. The process is very similar, except the you have one driver coil under the flywheel. Between 1974 and 1976 OMC was in the process of changing to solid state ignition with power packs instead of points and condensers.
      There is on driver coil under the flywheel and there are two external coil nears the spark plugs. If your all three of your coils check out ok then clean the points very well and set them 0.02 inch with a feeler gauge. It shows how to do that in the videos. It you still have issues, then unplug the wires going to the kill switch. If the kill switch is shorting out, then you will not get spark. If you unplug the wires going to the kill switch and you a get spark on both plugs, then you know the kill switch it shorting out.
