  • The Reliant Class Starship featured in canon for the first time in Star Trek Picard season 2 alongside the Gagarin, Sutherland and Ross vessels. This ship has a lot of lore on it from its origin in Star Trek Online and some of that translated behind the scenes to the shows so let's take a look and analyse this space ship.

It looks like a ship you could have some fun in, I know it's supposed to be designed for logistics but it still has that Starfleet toughness about it that says "underestimate me at your own risk" and wouldn't mind doing a couple of hard turns in the gravity wake of a black hole.

Your final point about complexity is an interesting one and has me thinking that it might point to a wider issue for the Federation in the late C24th to early C25th
Complex ships like this would not only require more effort to build but also maintain & support. Following a series of wars and attacks (such as the Synth attack). I wonder if the Federation was suffering its equivalent of a recession.
That may explain why complex ships were phased out - such as with Luna Class systems put into the frames of easier to maintain classes like the Constitution III that used simpler and common components where they could (e.g. the "old" style internals in the nacelles). Or why the Enterprise F was retired comparatively early.
Perhaps it was only with the Sagan & Echelon class we see Star Fleet returning to the best practice of developing top end fleets of related classes (last seen with the Sovereign, Parliament, California etc) even if they were designed for sustainability (the common nacelles still being used)

The Reliant Class should be easily reequipped for anything as its specialty. Need it for logistics? NO problem but there are better courier ships for that. Need a combat vessel? Easier to equip it from a bare keel but can easily be outfitted for combat and be a pocket battleship. The Reliant and Akira should be about the same in that regard. A ship class that can be aces at a single purpose if set up for that at the start.
Like the Akira, the Reliant can operate largely on its own but does better when part of a larger fleet/formation/constellation. The presence of such ships make a Command ship, Galaxy, Nebula, Odyssey, or similarly sized and capable class vessel that much more effective.

The Miranda Class may not be the best or biggest ship in the Federation, but I have great affection for her. 💖
To me, she's like the first car we had or the first girlfriend we kissed. Yeah, I know that's a corny thing to say. Judge me.
Along with the Interprise Constitution refit, the Excelsior Class, the Galaxy Class and the Nebula Class, the Miranda Class is on my list of ships that best represent the Federation and Star Trek.

In-universe, why would they name a ship class after the Reliant? The Reliant (NCC-1864, anyway) is famous to us because of TWoK- but in-universe, that seems like it'd be more infamous than famous.

  • @ODST_Parker

It's unfortunate they couldn't make this the new starter ship for the new tutorial and for new players to command. The beautiful new 25th century interior set doesn't really fit the Miranda class, and the fact Starfleet Academy is flying training cruises on 150 year old starships is kinda hilarious. Unfortunately, giving a T6 ship to new players instead of the old T1 Miranda just wasn't possible. I know they tried, but couldn't find a way.
Regardless, this is my favorite part of Star Trek Online outside of the main storyline. The updates of old ships with absolutely gorgeous new designs, new classes, and new roles in the fleet. As much as I love the TNG-movie-era starships like the Sovereign, Akira, Luna, etc., the 25th century really needed to stand out on its own. Thanks to Thomas and the rest of this game's designers and artists, they've done that spectacularly.

You have to wonder what Starfleet bureaucrat came to naming the class and went "Hey, remember that ship we lost during that embarrassing failed secret project that almost triggered a war and skilled Spock, and was hijacked by the worst warlord of the Eugenics Wars because we allowed him to live when Kirk found him? THAT one."

I want to see how far I can get with a Miranda variant. Would you recommend the Reliant or the Bozeman? I'm planning on picking up the T6 Excelsior variant to replace it with eventually, since I doubt I can get enough zen to buy the pack with the Legendary Excelsior, and the Excelsior-II is explicitly not an Excelsior variant, but its own frame.

    • @ffnbbq
      @ffnbbq Před rokem +2

      Wait for a sale!
One of the better Miranda variants is the T6 Clarke, as it also unlocks visuals for the Discovery-era Malachowski class. People have made impressive kitbashes using the parts the Clarke/Malachowski unlocks. The Clarke can also launch fighters, which is always useful for dealing damage and soaking up enemy fire.
Ignore the T6 Excelsior. The ugly 3000 zen Resolute was one if STO's earliest T6 ships and thus suffers for it in visuals and performance. The Legendary Excelsior is in the 11th Anniversary bundle and this far too expensive. If you want a decent Excelsior-looking T6 ship, consider the Concorde class Command Battlecruiser. It's big, though.
