A minor correction, Nungesser was attacked by RFC fighters, which he was forced to shoot down, that was why he added the tricolor stripes to his aircraft, it wasn't ground fire. Ground fire tended to shoot at all and any aircraft that was spotted, irrespective of the side.
One of my favourite stories about him was about the time that a German fighter dropped a message with a streamer on his airfield, challenging him to a duel. He turned up at the allotted time and at the allotted height, only to be bounced by a gaggle of enemy fighters. He shot down several in short order and put rounds in most of the others, which promptly stuck their noses down and ran for home!

Wonder how it will fly without 'em.

@@nonoyorbusness The model was designed without, many of my model biplanes respond poorly on ailerons alone most of the flying is done with the rudder.

@@MarkCroucherRC4fun Indeed they do Mark. I have a number of small WW1 Biplanes, all Rudder /Elevator and providing a slightly forward CG, all fly great. One exception is a little Mercury Tiger Moth which I restored from its original free flight to RC. At first it was awful on rudder only so retro fitted lower ailerons and now it a dream to fly.
