My BMW 1M BROKEN DIFFERENTIAL!? Hands On for a Full Service

- I bought the cheapest BMW 1M in the country, and it's in desperate need for a full service! Thanks to @liquimolywebtvLIQUI MOLY, I'm at Marlin Motor Engineers to get a bit hands-on with a complete check and see what we can figure out with the differential problem. Let's get started!
Having picked up the flagship E82 BMW 1 Series only a few months ago from Wisely Automotive; a car with almost 100,000 miles yet only a single owner from new, the first step was an investigation before installing a full infotainment systems ourselves. However, it's been in dire need of a proper service and fluid changes, so that's what we're cracking on with today.
My first ever car was a 1.2l Clio, hence last year I bought a Clio V6, before this year buying the 1M as a follow-up to the 123d that had replaced the French hatchback back then. I feared the car would need extensive work but thankfully after a preliminary investigation it is in pretty good shape except for some problems that it's experience with the rear limited slip differential.
Marlin Motor Engineers exclusively use high-performance LIQUI MOLY motor oils and additives, making it the perfect combination for a high performing car like the BMW 1M. With a full sweep of different products available for the car, we're running through the process with Joe from Marlin Motors.
You can find out about LIQUI MOLY's right motor oil and other operating fluids for your vehicle right here:

Ideally when you place engine flush in the engine you should always dump a cheap oil in there after to "wash out" the remnants of the flush. It thins out the oil!
Tom would have known this 😭
@@DrDrOpOfFsKi I'd have hoped so too 🤣
@@DrDrOpOfFsKiyeah, the guy who isn’t a time served mechanic knows more than the guy who is…..
Where is Tom?
@@AdventureBikeRiders-wg6yzhe's gone...he's working with somebody else...
Before you go through with a replacement diff, I’d recommend changing the fluid again and using the genuine Bmw fluid as they have friction modifiers and can usually cure the slight clunks and grinds these diffs like to do.
Small note for you guys. When you take the oil cap off don’t lay it upside down, the oil gets under the seal ring and then causes the seal to fail and you’ll start seeing oil seeping out around your cap. Also don’t leave tools on the engine, may scratch the plastic covers or knock your tool deeper into the engine.
What shall we do with all this cack in the air filter housing? I know, use an airline to blow in into the intake whilst the filter’s out. 😱
This was the bit for me that did it lol
Other than the diff and a/c, you have a healthy car... A great purchase...!
Absolutely!
Great video Tim! I’ve had my 1m since new and we crossed paths in Barnet when I was in it and you were in your SF90, earlier this year. I’d like to think I prompted the purchase😂
I remember that! It was certainly already on my mind; I'd been tracking this car for quite a while, since late 2022 before I bought it.
Ideally you want to open the fill plug of the diff before the drain plug, because you might not be able to open it later but the diff will have already been drained
Nice to see a lovely car in such good hands. Must have been loved by first owner so hopefully he will be pleased to see the car in good shape and getting such TLC.
I am so happy to see this car on the channel! It would be a nice trip coming to the Transfăgărășan Highway with this thing, a manual BMW is THE proper way to drive that road (coming from a manual BMW owner, myself), and for sure the audience would love it. Thank you for all the hard work you are putting down for these videos, cheeers!
Cool to see all the inns and outs!
The two plugs that are covered in soot are a sign of leaking injectors (common problem on the n54 engine). On my second n54 so know this all too well!
Edit: don't know if you will se this but would also add that the very dirty exhaust tips are also a sign. Worth getting checked as fuel will be leaking down past the rings and diluting the oil
I'll be watching this series with great interest. My 1M only has 40,000 km on the clock but the differential groans when going slowly around corners or in car parks. I've tried the BMW Diff fluid with FM Booster several times, but it doesn't fix the issue. Am starting to think that a diff rebuild or replacement is the only solution.
A lovely little car that is in the right hands for a little TLC. In terms of mileage, it should be good for another 40K if it's not tortured around the Nürburgring at any time in the future. If the engine fails, all is not lost as I have witnessed many 6 cylinders reborn into fire breathing monsters. Great video and I look forward to further M1 content my friend. Thumbs as always!
Nice video Tim! The Ceratec additive was used by the 5 litre mustang crowd a few years ago to remedy that dreaded 5.0 engine tick
Shmee150 Great Video I'm glad your BMW 1M had a Full Service with Liqui Moly Products and I'm glad the Rear Limited Slip Differentual was fixed
That little orangecar is awesome. Thank you for the feature, Tim.
When I had my 135 I never put additives in the fluids, factory was good enough I just shortened the service interval by half. If I did high performance driving then it went down to 1/4 of the service interval especially with the oil.
Really interesting video Tim. Thanks, cheers, John.
Thank you for watching
Love this type of content from your channel Tim. Especially on a fellow N54 engine🔧🪛🧰🔩⚙️
Honestly one of my favourite cars in the collection, so good looking
Omg never imagined that i would see Shmee doing this stuff in video. Please do more of these
I use to use marlin to do all the wk on my subarus about 15 years ago when I lived in Milton Keynes. Greats bunch of chaps
I’ve been using Liqui Moly in my car (2013 VW CC 2.0T manual) for 50,000mi… it’s been great! Noticeably smoother at idle and it just got a clean bill of health from my oil analysis at Blackstone labs. It’s all I’ll run from now on! 👍👍 They say “oil is cheaper than metal!”
N54 can be a pain when it needs work. But when its done its just lovely.
I love these BMW videos hope you are doing a roadtrip with it in the mountains and drive it a bit sideways.
Nice one, just ordered some of that Ceratec for my next oil change 👍
Congrats on making it in Topgear!
Not crazy, but cams & exhaust when you get the diff refreshed would easily net you 70hp+ & still be stock-ish
Cams? 😂 just map ip with downpipes will get probably more than that. You do not swap cams on N54 engines
its a good cool car, worth keeping up, good stuff
I do believe the differential clunk is like that from factory.
It was a known trait of the E46 M3 differential because it was such a chunky differential, and I'm pretty sure the 1M uses the E46 M3 differential as well.
My friends E46 M3 had that clunk at low speed directional changes and it was normal. Do check with some BMW experts, but I think they may say the same.
That's how they used to test emissions here in Maryland (in the States), but they long ago switched to plugging into the vehicles OBD2 port.
Cool little video 👍👍👍
Always check the refill plug comes undone before draining, also doing this aids drainage as it allows air in thus stopping the chugging effect when draining. Also if refill is seized you still have oil in the diff or gearbox.
Nice work
KW clubsports, Wavetrac diff & AP brakes. Mega fast road & trackday set up
Buying M or other sportscar with lot of mileage could be very tricky, cool Video🤙✨️
Hi Shmee, It's guys and welcome back to the channel
With regards to the diff clunk its possible it could just be bad diff bushing. The car is older so the rubber may be deteriorating. Most shops will just say you need a new diff so they can make more money off you. Try replacing the bushings first.
Skilled gent that one 👍
What a great car that is 👏🏼👏🏼 Where’s Tom by the way? Have I missed something!?
Great video Tim 👍 What difference do you find with the BMC air filters compared to standard?
It really depends on the car, but usually it only adds the ability to clean the filters as a benefit. You usually won't feel the power difference (if there even is one. Sometimes it goes down), it often decreases filtration, and in some cases the OEM filter's pleat design smooths turbulent air while the aftermarket doesn't. If this is the case you get surging and stumbling as the MAF struggles to read the turbulent air.
I had the same issue in my e46 330 convertible. We thought it was the diff but it turned out to be the sub frame bushes. Get them checked out.
Super video.
If you had to sell everything but the 1M and V6 Clio, still a cool garage IMO
I use Liqui Moly in my m3 love it 👌🏽
These tend to make diff clunk and I’d check the diff flange is not dry, as you may simply need to add some grease.
Love the 1M
There is a guy called Peter at the Nürnburgring who specialises on BMWs. He doesnt have a homepage, or anything like this. But he is one of the best tuners of BMWs. Misha probably can hook you up with his number. Would be a nice colab.
I can't get used to no intro and the new editing style, does anyone else feel this way?
Shmeee have a great weekend 💪🏽
And you too
Sorted diff, kw coilovers and ap big brake kit 👍
Sounds like a great plan
Keeps making out like 100k miles is a lot... 😂 lol
I like that car as we don't have it here in the States, but it's really cool and I know you're a guy that does clean easy mods. Wonder if you'd do a Mat Armstrong type if mod job on that one. Have a little fun building it up.
We definitely got the 1M in the states lol. They’re about $45K + minimum. EAG is selling one with 150 miles for $179,000 as we speak.
You should upgrade the headlights too, laser led would be nice and looks awesome
Does Akrapovic make an exhaust for that car, i think it would look great
I use the same oil in my 2003 BMW Z4 3.0 Good stuff for older engines.
You should be using 5w30 oil on the M54 engine FYI
@oliverdodic756 No, only when it was new! BMW "reoiled" the engine later to 5W40. Greetings from Germany.
You should connect with Sreten (M539 Restorations) if you’re going to “build” this car at all, he knows his BMW’s and is stickler for details
Service of a BMW 😍
I wish they put a bore scope in cylinders so we could see inside
I love the 100K miles on track idea
I wonder if I can make that happen down the line
I want to see Tim drive the bright blue Mk3 Fiesta 😀
That car is beautiful...
How did you ignore that Mk1 Escort Tim?
ALWAYS remove the fill plug before removing the drain plug on a diff or gearbox
Tell me about it. What a joke.
@@gio5898there are 2 reasons. 1. you can drain the oil faster.
2. Make sure, that fill plug can be loose.
Bet the service guy was relieved to get the brand new T-shirt and cap off
A Jaguar Project 8 would look great along side this in the garage.
I'm not the biggest Jaguar fan to be honest
Hoovie is building a dream garage on a farm and Shmee is buying the cheapest performance cars in his country. The world's turning upside down.
That's quite funny when you think about it!
Hoovie just wanted the land to bury his crappy old BMWs.
Did I just watch a big ad for Liqui Moly?
When I had a garage and the customer stood watching me I always said you do realise the labour rate doubles when you watch 😉
Tim’s not wearing the Aventi! 😮 First video I’ve seen in forever without it on! Can’t quite tell what’s replaced it 🤔 maybe/ probably a Swatch but i can’t tell which one… 👀
I can’t believe he can spend this much everyday on his cars and make more money back from videos. He’s made a full time job just tinkering with cars
LIQUI MOLY alway No1.
I really dont think if the diff needs to be replaced you could get away with the clunking just by changing the worn diff mounts to a new OEM mounts….
Great video Tim, thank you!
Any chance you disturbed the temperature sensor wiring when doing the new head unit?
We were wondering exactly that! Crossed our mind off camera, so we'll take a look for sure
Hoovies garage UK edition. Nice 👍
Did you install it though? 🤔
A ‘Car Wizard’ video on the Shmee channel.
Without tom on the team, is it harder managing the services?
Ps love the 1m sakhir is the best bm colour really suits it.
this isn't Sakhir----it's the classic Valencia Orange
When looking for your 1M did you consider hatchback also or just look for saloon ? I remember your RS3 was also saloon, is this meaning you prefer it to Hatch ?
I love this body shape, but both are great looking cars.
The 1M was only made as a Coupe
@Shmee150 Aha! That is why I never see one ! ?I didn't know this, because I see lots of 1 series & I think the M140i was hatchback ? Also you did have the RS3 as a sedan yes ?
Hi Shmee!
Hey Robert
Hi Shmee I have a modified 1M would love to show it you if your ever passing by Leicester in Valencia orange
Tim, take the car to Evolve and do a collab upload. Those guys can get the best from your car.
For LL-04 norm petrol engines, Ravenol REP USVO 5w30 or Ravenol RUP USVO 5w40 are far more superior then LM.
What’s the timing chain situation?
Castrol xj diff oil 75 w 140 is very important for BMW M LSD's . They dont sound right with most other oils.
Yam know what he’s doin arrr
What’s the story with the reg plate I must’ve missed that
Shmee the type of mechanic to fetch your left handed screw driver for you
Have the diff rebuilt with a Wavetrac unit.
Nice to see a car serviced right apart from the wrong oil 😢😂 👍
dont be to harsh to this car, 1m is a excellent car

Any plans for Remap on the 1M?
We might get to that later but not now
Interesting to see shmee in Milton Keynes 🤣 recognised that Tesco and matalan
Hiii from Australia:)
Hello to Australia
Loved this video, Tim!! Watching a car get serviced is petrol head porn!!😁👍
