What's WRONG With My BMW 1M? FULL INVESTIGATION
Vložit

- Is trouble lurking!? We're taking my newly purchased BMW 1M to @EvolveAutomotive, for a full investigation to see what might lie underneath. Despite being well serviced, the 1M has 93,000 miles and quite a life, so step one is finding out what we might need to repair or replace.
I bought the car and have only driven 100 miles so far due to being away at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but now it's time to get underneath the E82 gen BMW 1 Series and start to figure out what we're looking at. Knowing that the car has had some paint previously, and is certainly making some unusual diff noises, we have a starting point from which to go in terms of transforming this into an OEM+ machine that will be perfect in the garage.
First up, is to plug in the MUCAR CDE900 OBD2 scanner diagnostic tool to find out if the car is throwing any errors up from which we'll nee to start. It can check the engine, transmission, ABS, SRS, TCM, ECM systems on your car, and also read fault/error code messages, and further diagnosis can be accessed with a $40 one-time fee to enable the Scan Diagnosis feature too. You can get yours with a $25 coupon applied on Amazon here: www.amazon.com/DP/B0B2NZTC2S?...
Then we're on the road to Evolve Automotive to meet with Imran and Aston, to bring the 1M inside, up on the ramps, and start investigating what it needs. Evolve are very much experts on BMW M cars, and the right people to get started with on this project as we figure what we're going to be doing with the car.

Shmee going full on hoovie mode and I'm here for it 😂
Fun times ahead
I hope will be
Agreed. He does it well.
Needed to do a donut in it as soon as he bought it to break the suspension 😆😆

I'm in my office chair not doing office things. Thank shmee, love ya & Cheers to the 1M!
Haha, I'm at my desk being very office-y
Very thorough inspection, good people and a good place!
I also love your attention to detail with the intro colours and outro! Well done.
Imran is such a great guy, Evolve such a great company! Bought an Evolve Supercharger Kit for my E39 M5 which is running excellent since many years.
Love seeing cars like this Tim. Congrats on the purchase, I believe you will have a lot of fun with it. As a 987.2 Cayman S owner I cross shopped the 1M. The Porsche won me over with it’s beautiful balance and great noise but that 1M was a hoot to drive. Looking forward to future content with this vehicle, hope you enjoy it!
The fault codes can be mapped out Tim. Cool video, cool car and I imagine, a great adventure! Thumbs up!
Very clean underneath and well looked after Tim.
Good to see a car of this age on the channel, looking forward to see how it develops.
Really lovely car, and a prime example of why there’s not much point being scared of high mileage cars - as long as they’re looked after properly there’s not much to worry about. Either way, 93k miles over 12 years equates to less than 8000 miles per year, which is hardly repmobile-esque.
Good content right here that is really informative Tim. Take my like!
Really nice car, always loved the 1M. I know you don’t want crazy power out of it but a nice aftermarket exhaust, a remap and upgrade the air filter system would be just perfect to give it that little bit more of a kick. Also before you swap the tyres you gotta smoke the old ones, it’s what an M car is for 😉
Never tune a bmw
@@mitchellsteindler why? Remapping it and an exhaust isn’t much of a tune in the grand scheme of things.
@ShanesAutos because they don't run reliably in a stock state let alone a tuned state
@@mitchellsteindler there’s a lot of people running around in tuned BMW’s that would probably disagree with you. I had. 2017 420d and despite everything I’ve ever heard about BMW reliability it was perfect and never threw up a light.
@@mitchellsteindler I've been driving mine for 44,000 kilometers with 570 hp and nothing has ever broken apart from normal service, so don't talk nonsense if you have absolutely no idea and have never owned such a car. All these sayings were narrators about what is good or not and never had such a car are simply fools anymore.
That was a good purchase, nothing needed until your build 👍👍👍
I am really impressed, I expected some more stuff needing repair but overall not a bad purchase!
Luv it! Aston is very good at explaining what he’s checking too which is helpful!
Legend! can't wait to see this finished 😬
Can't wait for what we're doing
Great car! My favorite video of this car is the Top Gear review by Jeremy. The way drifts the hammerhead is so satisfying.
I think its asking for the Topaz dry ice treatment
Hi Shmee I'm guys! So excited for all to come with the 1M.
It's going to be a fun build
Hi Shmee, the light warning code could be the vanity mirror bulb- had that on my E91 or an interior light
Excited for the Yianni video and the new Zenvo too
EM Tuning for your light upgrades Trup does amazing work
Glad the M1 got a clean bill of health. The upcoming mods you’re going to have done to it will definitely give it a refreshed look.
1M
Comparing it to my E92 which looks pretty similar in a lot of places and having pulled out the complete rear-axle and replacing nearly everything down there - would also say looks pretty good 🥳 Not my favorite color but apart from that nice car. Enjoy it.
Like the direction the garage is taking!
Shmee150 Great Video I'm glad your BMW 1M is in great condition and I can't wait to see the Build
Tim your place looks awesome!!! Seriously smart.
I'm pretty sure I saw you WAY back in the day in your 123d on the M73 extension heading north. Rare car and I at the time had an E61 Silver 535d touring.
What a nice Lad he is inspecting your car!
This is a great series, something we could do ourselves.
I’ve got the E88 2.0 diesel and I love it. It’s the sport performance + model so it has upgraded suspension & wheels and a few extra M trim bits. Great handling little cars 👌🏻
Nice to see a Bimma back in the garage 👊🏽💙🤍💙🤍
The inside corner of the drivers side headlight appears to be slightly pushed in compared to the passenger side one!. It’s not significant but I could definitely see a slightly different angle from one to the other!. Hopefully it’s just where they took the headlights out to re spray the bonnet and put it back slightly misaligned!.
The beemer is absolutely mint!!
Hell of find shmee👌🏻
Good to see a real BMW on the channel, also one that your viewers can afford….
Wow, that is such a wonderful car. It's definitely one of my daily driver dream cars.
My 18 year old BMW 130i still has all the original suspension components after 145,000 miles so not surprised this has too
Insane 1M Tim !! ❤❤
I love it so far, it's only going to get better too
@@Shmee150 Someone I know also has a 1M ! 😁😎❤
@@benlecluyseme too!
Oh, that’s me 😅
The guy showing him around the car is a bit of a legend
Garaged cars usually stay that clean compared to ones that stay in the elements and with that said it's a good platform to build it up to the best of could be.
1M needs one of those amazing looking and sounding carbon Eventuri air intakes, I agree the infotainment screen needs to be fitted as well as alcantara steering wheel and gear knob. Looks like you bought a well looked after 1M.
Hey Tim, from my e82 ownership experience that is the light letting you know one of your exterior lights is going to go out soon (or already out).
Hopefully m1 in the future will never get broken
Lovely car. Says a lot about previous owner who must have cherished the car to have run it for nearly 12 years with such fastidious maintenance.
Just the rear main seal.. lol. My stang is in for a leaky shift shaft seal....now getting new rear main seal, new clutch/flywheel. Do it all while the trans is out.
Check to see if the headlights were upgraded to LED bulbs. Sometimes that change will throw an error in certain cars.
What a beautiful little BMW. I love to see such a well maintained high mileage auto.
Tim ,how about a dry ice clean on the underside ,or take it redish motorsport for a underside restoration?
That would be a great collaboration !
Great find
Love the car and videos
Will be a fun project…would definitely love to see it in a ‘Skittles’ color 😀
Even for a one owner car with FBSH this does look tip top. Great buy.
If I'm not mistaken, the 1M rear differential is the one from the E46 which from factory, brand new and mint condition, is a very aggressive and clunky at low speeds differential.
In a good, performance oriented kind of way.
I'd recommend checking that if the bulbs were upgraded to LED'S, if so make sure they are suited for the CANbus system thats in BMW's
Is that a Subway in the middle there? 😂
That's funny. 😊
Haha gotta do what you've gotta do!
@@Shmee150 😁
26:03 congrats on the new shmee mobile 👌
I love these videos... builder ones
This guy loved his MSeries , nice to see .
Check compression first. Check deposition with an endo cam. Sparks, belts, headgasket, oilpump gaskets / orings, oil + filter change. Dyno it to see how much power loss. Then dampers/coils, wheel bearings, wheel bushing. Change gearbox oil. Basically allthe stuff that is not showing on the OBD2
Oh what about a dry ice cleaning on the underside!
Love the 1 m. Absolute classic 👌👌👌
Hi @shmee what camera do you use to film this ?
Starred Pilot Sports? That means the owner went to BMW and bought the BMW-spec _tires_ too 😲😲
What a lovely car....in love with it.😊
Nice car, worth keeping. One of the more interesting cars in the garage
BUMP!! Gosh I love that colour! Its almost like the MCL 'burnt orange' colour! So good.
The white wheels on the M4 are like when you see a gorgeous bird in a nice right fitting dress but she’s paired it with white boots
what the diagnostics dont tell you is if the injectors are in good order, they have a tendancy to leak and if the cars been sitting for a long time they can wash out the piston as they are direct injection. you should have the index numbers looked at when it goes in for a service. i have done many of these injector and coil jobs and BMW never admit there is a problem...
Seeing that you bought at the bottom of the market, you scored a good car. Also, a rare car because there are none for sale on autotrader at the moment.
Get a walnut blast on that engine, N54 is notorious for carbon build up! Also that headlight error is likely from water in one of the ballasts (very common in these)
ah yes TY for the important info BMW we would never of guessed the door was open !
Mine has had some issues over the last 12 months.they are a bit finicky
But it’s worth every cent.
I hope you enjoy your ride.
Greetings from Oz
Hope you're enjoying it regardless
Very Impressive car / very well loved and looked after, Please keep it standard - Cheers
Love love love that car scheme making the 1m Singer stylie
Surprised you don’t link to the UK Amazon site for the Mucar reader?
I can't wait for you to bring this to the ring 😁 and i hope to be there too it's not too far from me i'd love to see you in action
Cool adittion to your garage!!
The HPFP is going to have to be replaced, valve cover EGR, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket, BCM, oil filter house gasket and a bunch of other little things. What ever you do replace the battery because if it dies you may not be able to get into the trunk easily.
Or replace the engine with an S55 from the M 3/4.
I would ❤to see a nice cosworth in the collection 😎
Look up mst cars mate. Tim needs one of those in his collection
Halo space is just a little too bright, Shmee; it should maybe be a darker color in there so accent lights don’t wash out the room
As big fan of Tim and the channel I do feel it’s lost a bit of continuity of content. Respectfully, one video is reviewing a car, next a road trip, next Shmuseum, next restoring a modern classic, next visiting car collections etc… I feel the Shmuseum channel needs to come back which would resolve this. Also, it’s Tim doing everything and as brilliant as I think he is - would be so good to break things up with Tom and Brad returning - adding some humour and fun!
Apparently the Shmuseam channel was taking too many views away from the main channel. Seeing as so much of Tim's business is connected to the main channel he couldn't let that continue, so he had to mothball the Shmuseam channel. He did mention in a previous video that something will be happening with the Shmuseam channel soon though.
@@matmul4850 cool! Thanks buddy
It wasn't taking away views, it was taking away time at the detriment of the main channel. We brainstorm as a team nearly every single day on a best next step but there are a lot of factors and it's hard to figure out.
So glad you are working with Imran and evolve 👏🏽 such knowledgeable and great guys
Shock! Man buys nice looking car with one previous owner and full service history and its in good condition!
Great video. This is what I want to do to my car. Runs and drives great, but at nearly 90k miles and it’s 6 years old, stuff needs to be looked over. Similar style of car, Camaro rear wheel drive, six speed manual, v6.
For the cheapest 1M looks really well taken care of and with regular oil changes the N54 engine can last well over 300k miles easily.
maybe the engine block will not the turbos hpfp cam bearing ledges coils water pump and valve seals lol
@@Globalx59 don't forget replacing $4,000 worth of fuel injectors every 3 years, burned up MOSFETs in the ECU, valve cover, engine mounts, every cooling hose ever, etc.. The only redeeming quality of the N54 is the block and the rotating assembly.
Just a horrible color. BMW should be slapped.
What're you smoking my dude 😂. It's one of the least reliable engines in modern history. There's a reason they replaced it after only a few years.
I think this guys trolling now that I read it again lol
We used to have a 135i hatchback, and I really miss that car tbh
I’m guessing the headlight warning was due to it being up on a lift and reading a difference in load. The headlight leveling sensor may need replacing.
i think if possible carbon fibre roof might be a nice visual upgrade.
A year sub, at this point I look forward to a shmee video like a tv show
Very nice car. 😎 That light warning you get but all lights are working could be a faulty GM module. That module are a known fault on this generation BMW when it have been little used for a while or been down on battery power over a long time.
You will not get any faultcodes for that. Only a light warning that will go away after a while.
Its possible to code away the warning for light error. But then you will never get warning when a bulb will go out either. 😅
Nice car. The N54 engine is a masterpiece although people argue that its not a real M engine. The rest of the hardware on this car more than makes up for it. I love my 2009 335i with the N54.
I may be weird, but I think the h8 bulb halogen rings on my -09 e87 look awesome! I have heard of many switching to white LEDs, but imo they are not right fit for the model - they feel to me like wishing the car was something else. + you get white rings on all newer models, but not more modern bmw with halogen colored ones - they stand out! But I get it if the look is not your favorite nor grow on you.. I have had my 1prew owner e87 for 7 years now and I haven´t had this strong opinion about this for longer than 2 or 3years :D
Tim , you should give a big thank you shout out to the previous owner of this car , he may be a subscriber , for maintaining this car and looking after it so well , it will be interesting to see what you have planned for it
Sadly I think he passed away
@@Shmee150 ah , what a shame R.I.P.
Lamp failure lights are standard on BMWs. I have a 3 series and warnings are always on even without a failure. Lol.
I got this engine in my Z4 and its a great package altogether.
ODBC scanner didn’t pick up the light fault displayed on the dash?
Hey Shmee! Will there be a video with the most recent visit from Yiannimize?
Yes, he filmed a video and it will come soon
The N54 with an Intercooler, exhaust and down-pipe, are effing ballistic! 😮
All cheap mods relatively speaking too. Simple stuff compared to these days.
I wonder if the previous owner will come forward? Judging by the condition, was clearly someone who respected their car and looked after it properly.
The diff always was a bit clunky even when new!
