Hey i watch your videos
LadyKraken Would you really rather have amazing graphics or good game performance?
A subtle detail I really love about the original is that when you light the bonfire its light then reveals the statue of the embracing woman. What an awesome way to reinforce that bonfires are the sparks of comfort and safety in the 'dark' of this world. Shame it got cut.
You can do that in the game...just use a sweetfx mod
@@ash_1419 they actually banned people in the early days for using any type of shader mod. Stupid ass FromSoftware
@@ash_1419 sweetfx doesn't add dynamic lighting and shadowing. It's just a glorified filter
I think they should remove all mentions of women
honestly, this entire situation feels like a sonic unleashed situation
that game looked way ahead of its time and they went for it, unfortunately it played like shit in a lot of areas and later sonic games made the graphics worse for playability
ds2 had a similar fate except they never released the super good graphics.
The old one clearly had worse "graphical quality" (as in texture resolution, detail, etc), but it had much better and more fitting lighting, shading, atmosphere, and a more cohesive model style. The update just makes it look like an out of place asset flip game.
not even true, look at the giant sword at 5:00 the old quality is way better
Urm... i think its because the old one was still in beta?
the lighting was definetely better, not just artistically. However the rest was worse. I think they could not pull off that lighting on the old consoles
Noze I think they did it to be more fair. It’d be pretty bs if half the time you had to sacrifice a shield for a torch. It’d like if Tomb of the Giants was in multiple different areas. And they knew everyone hated that area, and likely why they made the new lighting more simple and fair
The old one had that Dark souls 1 look
Your dedication to recreating the demo as closely as possible is the most impressive part of this video. I can’t imagine how long that took and I thank you for it cus the side-by-side view is super effective
The downgraded one looks like your game will look after following those boost FPS guides.
Bubble Double for real
Bubble Double and actually that's The reason for it was downgraded in The first place.
Edit: i wonder if Low Spec Gamer worked with From Software (?
The original demo ran like shit so they had to follow that FPS boost guide you talked about.
It still won't run well because fromsoft can't make good pc ports.
Butter Butt actually The port for DS 2 Is pretty good, i can Run it my laptop with Intel graphics 4000 at 40 fps (in low qualtity sure) and without need of some External mod like ds fix. Now The port for DS 1 and 3 on The other Hand...
Makes you realise how important lighting is
yep u can make as high quality assets as u can but if lighting and shadowing isnt proper on scene this shit will look like 80s game
Yeah, that's why despite all the bs, I love ffxiii
Thats why a lot of people use minecraft shaders.
Lighting plays a huge factor. Just look at the first FEAR and Doom 3... Without lighting, the two games would look like absolutely dog shit smeared on a bathroom stall's wall.
I know that they removed the lightning because of performance issues, and the absence of Miyazaki as the director.
Goes to show how lighting is as crucial as graphical quality
huge reason why the bluepoint demon souls remake looks so good. the lighting improvement is incredible
@lelandrb Bluepoint ballsed the Demon's Souls lighting up much more than it improved it. Took away a lot of the fantasy lighting in favor of realism in more cases than improvement.
In my opinion the best way to play Demon's Souls is on RPCS3 with the 60 fps patch and a simple resolution upscale.
@@420malbania4 if by "fantasy lighting" you mean "no lighting". pretty much every single from software, especially elden ring, has flat, neutral lighting. sometimes bright, sometimes dark. no surprise that adding lighting makes it more realistic
@@420malbania4 the tower of latria is a great example. the prison is just drab yellow and green in the original, which is randomly cast from the walls, lol. the remake has the green be emitted by flickering, sinister torches. way more atmospheric
@@lelandrb Yeah I can't stand the lighting in ER most of the time. There is no bloom. Funnily enough, ER has a lot of that DS2 look to it. DS2 with just lightingengine and 4k textures looks really good though. Honestly ER graphics are a step backwards. Bluepoint not even being a developer of the original game, still has the most next gen looking Souls game, and by extension, Fromsoft game.

The bland, flat look of DS2 is the greatest example of the importance of lighting.
Nah. People didn't care that DS3 downgraded their lighting to DS1 levels
Huge Hombre lighting doesn't matter in the slightest, in fact, the pre-release version looks unplayable
@@wallacesousuke1433 Lighting in games matters a lot, the fuck are you smoking mate?
Its creates atmosphere and depth within the environment, models, and textures. Its the difference between the game looking flat like the original comment said and it actually looking good. The two different versions of the game look like night and day.
Willy et scientia your opinion is bad.
Twilight princes for the GameCube had better lighting, until it was washed out in the wii u version. Hope Skyward sword doesn't get the same treatment
The final release definitely has a lot of improvements but they took a lot of steps back with the lighting and overall feel of the game. The preview version would’ve been such a blast and scary experience. Honestly if they would’ve just kept the lighting the same.
It was probably to optimize its performance. I remember this game ran smooth af
Sadly the game came out for the ps3 when the ps4 was already out, while most of the studio was working on an actual ps4 exclusive game. they didn't want to deliver laggy game again and had to remove all of the lighting system in the process, They could've revived it fot sotfs but didn't bothered to.

I don't know what's worse: The fact that they released the game without telling anyone about the downgrade, or that they decided it was a good idea to just re-release the exact same downgraded game on the newer systems without putting any effort into making it look as it was originally intended.
GloryToStan Well they could have upgraded it in the new gen systems but NOOOO...
I imagine it's hard to take assets from a gameplay reveal and use them to make an upgraded version of a game you've already made with different assets. Seriously though, there is so much more to doing that that it's absurd
I rather have the later version with 60 FPS than the E3 version at 25-30 FPS on current gen consoles. I think they made a wise decision.
AJ Singh I don't give two shits about fps when it comes to third person. I don't think they've made a good decision at all.
ak so K
It feels like in some areas of the final game, it looks fantastic visually, my biggest example being the Looking Glass Knight and Majula. Other areas just look way too dull without the shading.
Facts. Dark Souls 2 just seems way to bright and dark at some times. It would’ve have been really cool to see realistic lighting in the game. I bet they removed that feature because they thought it would piss off a lot of casuals.

I remember seeing that guy use the torch & being blown away by how beautiful it looked...then using it in game myself and dying inside LOL.
thank god the gutter exists
no, fuck the gutter.
Why, exactly? There were better lighting effects in some games made before 2008...
its not how good it looked, its how it was utilized, without torches you could barely see ahead of you, but with torches you could light up the place and from the 1st bonfire you could see these lights which were the torches you had lit up, probs the most original area in the game
@@TheSpyChecker there was better lighting effects in 1998, in Unreal

Make places that are supposed to be dark darker
Upgrade graphics so it won't look like it's upscaled PS2 game, the game looks so crispy... in the worst way
Imagine making a game that looks better and worse at the same time

That original lighting looked amazing! The dark areas of the game would have been way scarier. Too bad even sotfs didn't deliver.
You could've delivered that yourself with SweetFX/Reshade to restore those lighting settings actually. Not your job but hey its a workaround that works well at least.
@@PuellaMagiHomuraAkemi Wish I could have, but I'm not a PC player. That mod does look good though! I knew dsfix was a thing on the first game, but I didn't know one existed for DS2.

I personally find it sad that they still go for such shady strategies to give people a reason to buy a console, I expected that to be over considering how much they praised the PS5s specs. I just dont get it why making an exclusive for no reason, I mean it would've not been hard for them to port bloodborne or Demon Souls to PC as they did before /= Its a real shame, I would've loved it to have played Bloodborne too x.x
Definitely would've preferred that older version that had higher poly details and better atmosphere. Low texture resolutions is a fine price to pay and easily remastered. A fair bit of things got streamlined out, even the doorframes looked better.
Have you played both of them?
"Low texture resolutions is a fine price to pay and easily remastered"
This is the fucking problem we have with games nowadays. We just expect them to be fixed by remasters instead of looking good when they come out. Also, what are you talking about? People bitch about the low quality textures in DS2 release.

Raider2k not really. The only time you will use it is in the boss fight to lock on and that's it. The area resets and so do the torches which makes them useless.
Raider2k Lost Sinner
Promant something tells me you never found the key that lets you light up oil ducts on both sides outside the bosses room. It turns the lights on in there so you dont have to waste room in your inv with a torch
Mark Franco Of course I found that key. Where did you get that idea from? You asked which boss, I just answered.
You can lock on the Sinner from further distance if you have torch, but you can use it (the torch, not Sinner ;) )to light up lamps aswell, what pretty works the same.
Xcho you do though. Many enemies react to fire and you need it to light several darker areas. At least in SotFS.
I get that the extreme darkness could become cumbersome if implemented in most of the game but I like the idea of choosing between defense(shield) and visibility(torch). The latter would result in exciting, aggressive gameplay like bloodborne.
That's me but with Skyrim and how few areas are dark enough to use a torch or light spell.
Lighting as part of gameplay, can be very interesting at times and I like games that explore more of it.

They took the life out of this game
In the release, there are areas who look really lame and walls/floors that are just textures repeated, while in the old version/demo, the walls/floors had more than just repeated textures like in 1:51.
The particle effects are downgraded at almost non-existent as well. Particle effects that were present in sword hitting the enemies, using items. And the UI looked better in the demo as well.
I mean, if they created a version just like the old one, I would buy straight out. Because it looks so much better in comparison to the release.

Stuff that Dark Souls 3 can't touch due to it being entirely broken by mechanics sadly. Dark Souls 2 had so much more details and build variety while Dark Souls 3 dont has any of it anymore and has overall way less content with DLCs that are too short, overpriced and that are breaking the game even more, the last DLC in particular. @@PuellaMagiHomuraAkemi It has the most content because they focused on quantity over quality. In terms of boss design, level design, and combat, it's easily the worst game of the entire series. No they didn't. It is the opposite, what you talk doesn't make sense. It is combat-wise the absolute best be it PVP or PVE but the areas feel shallow in PVE which you can luckily fix with Reshade but the mechanics and the sheer content of weapons, armor and spells are there along with stats to make you stand out. It is by far the most QUALITY and detailed Dark Souls up to date by mechanics and content.
Boss battles aren't great though for the most part indeed but to call it the worst of the entire series is PLAIN wrong and absolutely retarded just for that. They aren't great but it doesn't make the game bad because enough other things are good.
If you think Bloodborne is superior look at DS3, its the worst contentless trash you can get with no mechanics because they put bloodborne in it.
Apart from that Bloodborne and Sekiro are their own things and designed for being their own things which works great.
If you wanna call the for the worst Dark Souls go for 3. Its terrible in every aspect as it has no mechanics at all and PVP is unplayable while PVE is just a R1 spamm. Wowie. It shows how you have absolutely no clue to call the combat in DS2 bad while its the best and most detailed in the series with its mechancis while DS3 is just spamm R1.

Problem is these shader mods doesn't have the proper art direction nor the proper implementation to be highly optimized on the level that these development teams can make them.
+Blag Cog Agreed. They are, however, amazing tools. SweetFX, especially the older versions, is ridiculously easy to tweak and you can make the game look however you want once you've learn which effects do what.
We'll never have E3 DS2, but being able to apply "my" own post-processing to games is both fun to do and look at afterwards.
mods don't fix a shit game.
The demo was perfect, the lighting the huds the glows everything
So, having seen some of the dev notes in early versions of the game, here's my theory as to what happened:
For a while, the plan was to make Dark Souls 2 a game that depends on torch management and light for its atmosphere and scares. Somewhere during the development process, they probably found that this light management and stumbling in the dark doesn't work as well as they expected. Because of this, they had to brighten everything up, but since all the assets were designed for the darkness, the game ended up looking washed out. On top of this, they were on a tight schedule, so they couldn't properly fix this.
That’s a brilliant observation! It would have been interesting to see how the game turned out if they stuck with that idea.
@Я не знаю как говорить по-русски a few rooms?🤔
1:50 is the best example of the entire comparison.
They upgraded the texture of the bridge but forgot everything else.
except it's not an upgraded texture, I don't get where people are saying the comparison on the right has upgraded textures at all. The only reason any of the textures on the right look better is because they are comparing a capture from an IGN video of a 360 game to a PC port so of course certain things will look clearer.
@@Jaqen-HGhar except the game as a whole used to have much better lighting with dark rooms you had to take slow and methodically now it's bright as hell with no need for a torch throughout the entire game. In an atmospheric game, lighting is everything and they ruined it
Wait why they removed the monsters in the new one what ? 🤦♂️ why they downgrade it ....
@@jaheimcrussell3955 i know its late but the Game Development was Hold 2 years Too Early also

@@jaheimcrussell3955 They didn't remove the lizards dumbass, there's just less of them so they're not impossible to fight.
Dark Souls 2 prepare to lie edition
DS3 didn't lie when they downgraded their lighting to DS1 level and people slurp it up. Why try to improve things if people will look at you with more critical eyes?
@@fnd2583
Really, they downgraded DS3?
Well, Im sure it wasn't pathetic, like DS2 since I didn't notice a difference between the trailers and the game.
@@yeahwellthatsjustlikeyouro7466 They ditched a major feature from Dark Souls 2 like dynamic lights from torchs, you would notice it if you took the time to compare the graphics and features between sequels (as it should be, trailers and previews are bs propaganda as far back in early 2000, that's why i rarely watch them)
@@fnd2583
Dynamic lightning? In DS2? Torches?
Even in the "darkest" locations in the game like the Gultch torches weren't necessary.
And the only deceptive trailers I've come across are Ubisoft trailers (which I don't gave a damn about since I don't buy those) and Dark Souls 2. (This one did hurt)
@@yeahwellthatsjustlikeyouro7466 Torches where useful in some places(not much tho', blame the level designers but the potential was there), but it's more about graphical features (which is the main point off all the people complaints in regards to DS2). Torches and a lot of light sources in DS3 doesn't cast shadows like DS2 does(the exception is some static bonfires), there is even a dumb feature of stripping the main character of his own shadow if he is hollow(good job making the game uglier). I don't care that much about trailers, but sequels stripping good features from their predecessors pisses me off much more.
Y'all are trippin. The second one's lighting is bad sure, but the first one looks unplayable. It's so dark and all the colors look the same. You can't tell what anything is.
this, i always will prefer gameplay over atmosphere.
@@MigBaez Dark Souls 2 has no atmosphere, because it has 2007 lighting. The only place that looks nice is Majula, where as DS3 and DS1 had beatiful scenery everywhere. The game would at least have SOME with the original lighting. It's okay if they toned it down a bit, that makes sense for gameplay, but they didn't have to remove it.
@@gu3z185 If you say so lol.
(Keeps enjoying the scenery of Heide' Tower of the flame, Drangleic castle and other places along their hommies who keep praising it via orange sign soapstones).
@@gu3z185 I have a lot of friends with visual disabilities and functional eyes who think the same. The graphical change was necessary as the ones in the first game lack horridly of contrast, graphically speaking Dark Souls 1 aged a lot in terms of optimizatiom and graphical playability, its graphics although interesting these are physically tiring (after a while my eyes get watered down and pink when i'm forced to grasp in the environment). By other hand a lot of areas are full of framedrops that forced the fandom to depend on mods like Dsfix to do something about, in that mod to increase performance you need to sacrifice those graphical enchancenents. Not even Dark Souls Remastered fixes a lot of those problems as you require a pc with a lot of RAM even if you have a DX11 graphics card and the contrast is still bad (and to think those motherf*ckers of namco removed PtdE from sales in general thinking the ramastered could replace it).
I don't have issue with Dark Souls 3 in the graphic gameplay sense BUT that's what you you'd expect after two games, even though its optimization is as crappy as in ds1 even for console versions, i blame the shading in part of that too. Dark souls 2 is very good in both of those aspects: 2nd place in being visually approachable (imo) and 1rst place in being affordable for low spec gaming.
May be they could put a look in the middle for DSII (considering the existence of games like Castlevania Lords of Shadow 2 which has good shading and optimization) but you have to consider the developers were missing time at the end to rethink the shading from the scratch. things like performance would have been sacrificed and i'm thankful they weren't.
One thing that largely goes unappreciated about Dark Souls 2 graphics is that it doesn't have any aliasing problems and runs at a stable frame rate on any platform unlike Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3 and Dark Souls 1.
Except for 360 and PS3, man that game has a terrible framerate and screen tearing, specially on PS3
The pros of having a huge wallet but not soul.
DS2 ran horrible on PS3 and 360
bloodborne doesn't run well but it's actually a good game. And ds3 runs pretty well on low budget builds on pc.

The original truly put the "dark" in Dark Souls.
It’s Dark Souls but the remastered to Light Souls.
This puts ubisoft to shame
Salokin Nah. Not even close.
This is one occurrence compared to Ubisoft's repeated offenses.
Somebody always have to put down ubisoft huh, cause that totally fair...

It's like they just switched off contrast, shadows and reflective lighting.

The ironic thing is that DS2 is the best souls game for magic builds but If they had kept the lighting like this then any ranged build would be way worse
Im happy that i never saw any of these trailers or gameplay footage before playing it, so i wasnt dissapointed. Im watching this 1 year AFTER i already beated the game just because i found it randomly on CZcams.
People to this day still deny that there was a downgrade in Dark Souls 2.
And they're doing it in these very comment sections. Dark Souls fanboys are right up there with Blizzdrones when it comes to delusion.
It's almost like aesthetic is a completely subjective topic that there is no right answer to.
Breh. Are you serious? The left objectively looks way fucking better. It has more advanced effects and better atmosphere. You can clearly see that the game was built around the darkness, but had to be downgraded last minute at 2:30 when the guy goes to pick up the torch. The torch is absolutely useless in the final version because the game is missing lighting effects.
Sketchy West117 Its not subjective because both iterations are trying to go for the same design philosophy. Its just that the left one achieved that visual philosophy much better. If we were discussing between two different styles of design in a game then yes, its subjective. But this video showcases texture resolution, polygons, pixel shading, lighting, geometry, etc. All of which are technical. ALL OF WHICH ARE QUANTITATIVE. Thus, its objective.
I mean they upgraded nearly as much as they downgraded.
Crowbcat is the Dark Souls of CZcamsrs

Honestly you can't win. People are angry that it's not dark enough, yet if it were like this people would complain about being too dark.
You may be right, but i can't help but feel like people wouldn't be nearly as upset with DS2 if that was the case. At least DS1 was a pretty dark game in its own right, so the jump wouldn't be as stark
I would like to see peoples reactions if the whole game was like tomb of the giants
Dark Souls II is the Demon's Souls of Cuphead of video games.
J Victor comparing Dark Souls difficulty to Cuphead is pretty retarded
Shhh just let him him keep that mentality....
J Victor nice profile pic!!! Don't see enough of them
I see that Brand New avatar.
What?
For anyone wondering why the E3 version looks so blurry:
Low res textures (360 only had 512mb of RAM), strong depth of field in the distance, sub-720p render resolution that was common at the end of the console generation, and possibly FXAA, combined with CZcams compression.
This footage is being compared to the PC port of the remaster at max settings.
The focus should be on the missing lighting system, particles, shaders etc, not the clarity or lack thereof. I guarantee you the PC version of what DS2 should've been wouldn't look anywhere near as blurry.
The textures thing is bullshit excuse. Splinter Cell Blacklist on 360 comes with an optional hd texture pack. Which looks a hell of a lot nicer then the textures in this game. The 360 could've done better, the devs just can't make a good looking game.
It's not the Scholar of the First Sin at all, enemy placement isn't the same.
Scholar of the first sin looks a shitton better
someguy2351 yeah i don't think the footage on the right is from scholar

dark souls 2 on 2017? Damn, this comparison was right on time for release.

They should compare DS2 lighting vs DS3 lighting to see you can downgrade your game between sequels
@Ldybug Good lighting would be something like the Metro series, DS lighting is average at best from the tech available.
It looks like it was just lighting effects that made the game look like shit. From can try to defend themselves by saying it made the game "unplayable" but it would have made torches actually useful along with the challenge and atmosphere skyrocket. Maybe they went overboard in the demo but they butchered it so much it looks like there's no lighting at all.
Just looking at the first area they showed off I immediately saw why they gave you a torch off the bat. To bad that we never got to FUCKING USE IT. Even in some of the darkest areas of the game, I never found myself needing to use a torch like I did when I was in TOTG. It's sad that just the lighting alone would've made this game look so much prettier.
yeah what I thougth has well, hopefully you can activate the old lighting or mod it so it has the same feeling
SkyNinja759 The textures are way shittier too.
Wow, cannot use the torch now. What a big deal...
Don`t confuse challenge with poor gameplay mechanics. You think people would have fun fighting against enemies which you can`t see where their attacks are coming from or where you can run to evade them? What about suddenly dying by an attack or enemy you didn`t see?
Sure, the game had a downgrade, but the gameplay improved. You could argue they could make good graphics without the super dark contrast, but that`s unrelated to the comparison and intention of this video.
Good graphics don`t equal good gameplay. For a better understanding of this, go watch videogamedunkey`s video called "Bad Graphics".
fuck you fanboy
So we really needed Lighting
