      Lets break this down...Brody should have gave the people a show..Without the people's money there is no character he plays. Nice guy? Nice guys usually do not get murdered by their peers. I'm not saying for a fact that Brody was a totally selfish scumbag who cared only about his money and his image and the hell with everyone else...but...there sure were many prominent signs that that was the deal. I mean how many wrestlers totally stop working a cage match like an unprofessional jerk? None maybe?

And Kerry was the quintessential "pretty boy with a body". Not to mention many others that fit that description. Lex wasn't selling and trying to tell a vet how it's gonna go. This was highly informative and entertaining. Before I saw this I was more on Luger's side, but now I have a whole new opinion. Luger was leaving the company. It's tradition that he does the job, especially to a veteran in a cage match. Furthermore, he was calling spots and not selling the offense at all. This is a veteran in the ring and he's green as hell. That's majorly disrespectful, especially back then. Thank you for this video it really helped me understand the situation.

    • @davidlewis5312

    • @actionsub
      @actionsub Před 7 měsíci

      @@davidlewis5312 Brody was never really "retained" anywhere; he was one of the few wrestlers who could and would come and go as he pleased.
      This isn't the first time Brody pulled a stunt like that. Before that, Brody was in a feud of sorts with a rookie Jim Duggan down in Houston. They'd done a storyline over in Japan where Duggan blinded Brody somehow. When Brody returned to Houston, as Bruce Prichard put it, "he had a hair up his ass and just didn't want to work".
      So Brody sits down in the middle of the ring with his legs and arms crossed like an Indian chief. Duggan is totally confused and stomped around the ring; Buck Robley (then Duggan's manager and also the Houston matchmaker) jumps up on the apron and starts yelling "Frank, please! We'll work something out! Please!"
      In other words, the heel's manager is begging the face to get up. Finally Robley instructs Duggan to do something, so Duggan kicks Brody, who treats it like an Orange Cassidy kick...and then all of a sudden lies down on the mat. A still-confused Duggan covers Brody for the pin.
      Backstage, Paul Boesch is going berserk and sends both Brody and Robley packing.

    Dark side of the Ring Bruiser Brodie episode was very good and worth watching

  • @animegamesmoviesandotherst3037

    What I think is this now it could be as you said at 12:23 but to me Bruiser Brody was like most top guys, they were always trying to protect there spot. I think the match ending in a DQ or Draw was reason Brody did this, along with Lex not listening. If it was booked for Lex to look strong going out of this, Brody was in his mind going to look weak. As he was the big star, and Lex was a nobody at lest to him. So yeah he wanted to look strong,
    A lot of guys who moved between Wrestling Territories never wanted to look weak, because that could hurt them when going to other ones effect the pay. Most forget this, in modren wrestling the wrestlers get paid no mater what as they have contracts so if Sheamus gets paid 2000 a week, he gets it no matter what. Even if he is the opener, or in the main event he gets paid the same.
    Back then your pay was not guaranteed, no you got paid based on were you where on the card, how big a name you were, how much the gate was, also the higher you were the bigger gate cut you got. Most wrestlers would do anything to protect thier spots, and money.

    • @Chuck_EL
      @Chuck_EL Před rokem +1

      Right this is why I roll my eyes at fans criticizing Hogan, Bret and Hbk "politicking" to keep their spot
      As you said they lose money and buy rates if they look weak when they lose or win I'm a huge Taker fan but as Luger he was still green at that point he wrestled Hogan, plus Hogan did make him look strong throughout but if Hogan would gotten beat even clean his stock would of went down that's why the finish was the tombstone pile driver on the chair
      Even then Hogan would of lost money and his spot this was during the time Hogan was the biggest star inside of wrestling and he was one of the biggest stars mainstream it made sense for him to lose that way

    • @animegamesmoviesandotherst3037

      I think fans criticize them because they are used to how wrestling is now, or they have no clue how it was. Also to me putting over someone clean is not always great if that person fails be a huge draw it could hurt too. I mean look at Hogan and Warrior, Hogan puts Warrior over clean, and Warrior did not do that great after time passed. That is why to me Hogan putting the Taker over, they way he did was good he still looked strong. The chair was perfect.

    That “certain magnetism” you mention is called physical charisma and it’s basically always been the X-Factor that wrestlers and bookers and promoters talk about. Even when Rock was getting booed mercilessly because of the terrible Blue Chipper character, he still had that physical charisma which made people love to hate him and was a big factor in fans immediately embracing him when he turned heel and took on a more natural persona. It’s why Sly picked Hulk Hogan to be Thunderlips in Rocky 3, why Gorgeous George was an absolute revelation in the industry, and was a huge component in Mick Foley getting over in Japan which is what opened doors for him in the west. It’s why Ultimate Warrior and Kerry Von Erich were both big draws and was a big part of Goldberg’s initial push and why Brock Lesner has never not been over. No matter what you choose to call it; be it magnetism, physical charisma or the much touted “X factor” (not the one with Sean Waltman) it is a universal truth that it’s something that can’t really be taught, although it can be learned.

    I appreciate how you weighed in all the evidence and came to likely conclusions over what happened based on said evidence. I'd say Lex was more in the right for staying professional, but I can understand where Bruiser came from in regards to experience versus the hot new thing. That's also the nature of the wrestling business, though. Great video.

    If I had to make a guess, it could also be that Brody simply felt that Luger's offense in the match itself was too weak for the stipulation, as cage matches are supposed to be rougher bouts, so he decided to test Luger by no selling his constant punches to the head & start kicking him in the head when he was down. When Luger simply fought back with EVEN MORE PUNCHES TO THE HEAD, Brody just continued to no sell, which resulted in Luger freaking out & getting scared. Who knows, maybe if Luger actually changed things up & started doing other moves, then maybe Brody would have started playing along again. Brody was weird like that, I guess.

      @Jim H. Lex didn't go the back and immediately grab his bag though.
      Luger was confused because he didn't understand the business then and honestly didn't for awhile afterwards. Brody had a problem with the promoters and particularly Jim Crockett Jr who was about to take over the Florida territory. Crockett hated Brody for reasons just like this as did several others. Luger was on a fast track to main eventing on a national level with Crockett taking over and Brody knew he was soon to be out of another place to work. Paul Boesch permanently banned Brody from his shows for doing this same type of thing to Jim Duggan a few years prior to this. Brody wanted to punish the promoters but was actually punishing himself and everyone who bought a ticket to the show.

      I agree. Brody is clearly still working his punches and kicks, because you don’t get kicked in the head stiff by a dude his size and just pop back up. This was a lesson about give and take in a wrestling match, if you’re relying on your opponent to make you look good it is your job to make them look good too, provided they aren’t just a job guy (in which case you should do your damndest to not hurt them, which is sadly something a lot of stars from this era didn’t care one lick about). I think Lex did get the message because he grew significantly in terms of his selling as he moved on to JCP, WCW, WWF and then WCW again. Is this an old school way of teaching? Yes, obviously.
