    Depending upon what you're doing with the wall, it's normally a good idea to mix some pva/white glue or mod podge into the black layer there. It adds a lot of durability to the end result.
    Another way that I've been doing stones is to go with a chalkier white paint (I mainly use the larger bottle applebarrel white...for some reason that one seems to have the best result), go with that as a base coat or mix in a bit for a very light grey. Then I shift over to using thinned down inks rather than paints and use them to hit different stones. I've used greys, blues, reds, and browns along with some mixes. following that with a directional drybrush of off whites...and, sometimes, a pure white that's extremely focused for a final highlight.

    A couple of years ago my grand daughter asked me if I could help her with her class project!!! Her project was to build a "working volcano" and make it look "as realistic as possible"!! Now I am an old school model builder, who used to build scale models back in the 1970s!! And as I completed painting her volcano, with tricks I knew from years of building models, I suddenly realized I was missing a number of "stones" to make it look more "realistic"!!
    The solution was simple..... I went out to the end of my gravel driveway and grabbed handfuls of tiny stones and placed them in a few baggies! Returning I "graded the stones" by size and shape, and began randomly gluing them to the model using Elmer's white glue and a small brush! Ultimately when she was graded on "her project" the teacher gave her an "A++" on it, and told her that her model was one of the best she (the teacher) had ever seen!!

    I want to build a stone wall out of foam to go around the garden of my French style dolls house. The only problem is that the wall curves, and foam isn't bendable. I would love your advice please? I am mesmerised by your skill in making dioramas look so realistic. Thank you.

    • @smolworldworkshop
      @smolworldworkshop  Před měsícem

      If the foam is thin enough, it can be bent to a certain extent. I made a curved foam wall similar to this one in my medieval tavern video if you want to check it out. Another way is to use individual stones, made from foam or real gravel, and stack them one by one in the shape of your curve. Thank you very much, and I hope this helps!

    I’m not gonna lie, that is a fine looking stone wall! Would you do it the same way if you were making it a floor instead of a wall? And where would you put the highlights? Toward the viewer?

    • @smolworldworkshop
      @smolworldworkshop  Před 8 měsíci

      Thank you!!!! For a floor, I probably would only highlight with a drybrush layer of a lighter color, that way it would catch on the highest edges of the textured stone which would receive the most wear and tear.

    Your wall videos are all great. Could you recommend a more time-efficient version of this technique though? For example, can you get away with doing the deck tan highlights only once? If so, at what point in the process? I looooove the end result but if you're trying to paint 15 sections of wall, that's hundreds of stones that have to be highlighted and washed with different browns TWICE.

    • @smolworldworkshop
      @smolworldworkshop  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Thank you! If I were to do something quicker, I would only add the gray tones and highlights by drybrushing since the paint practically dries instantly. I would then probably do a brown wash and green wash for dirt and moss. Then I’d speckle on some black and white and call it good. It won’t be as detailed, but it will still look great in a fraction of the time.
