Thank you very much for this video. I occasionally dabble with Gl.iNet devices, but didn't realise that they had this functionality. I currently use a Netgear M2, paired with a more basic Poynting antenna (a holdover from difficult COVID times). As you point out, the external antenna connections on the Netgear devices leaves something to be desired. I will definitely consider the Gl.iNet when I build my van.
I have been researching replacing my Teltonika rut950 for my campervan & expected to buy a Teltonika router of some sort. Having watched this video I bought a GL-X3000 and it’s brilliant! I have been out today and it hasn’t missed a beat. Thank you for drawing my attention to it as I hadn’t heard of it before. Brilliant presentation 👍

How do you run this on a 12V system? Seems like it only has a 230V adapter?
@@jrgenstrayqvale4359 It is native 12 volts - the adapter just changed 240v AC to 12v DC so you can plug it into a mains supply.
The RUTC50 is out July 2024 - the RUTX50 unit but with WiFi 6!
Yep it is - but from my perspective, if running primarily on Celullar, that is pretty much always going to have a lower performance than WiFi6 - so I can't see it bringing a significant improvement to most people.
I'm running a pair of RUT956's through a TP-Link ER605 load balancer in my van. Total cost was £490 but the advantage is I can run SIM's on different networks and the load balancer chooses the fastest one by default.

Personally I would have gone with the RUTX12 www.solwise.co.uk/TL-RUTX12 with its built in twin Cat 6 modems and built in load balancing. For £315 (with our 10% discount at Solwise.co.uk) for a cleaner set up, delivering the same functionality but with higher performing / carrier aggregating modems than the Cat 4 in the RUT956.

But one advantage you have is redundancy if one of the units fail.
@@ExploreVanUK It was mostly the redundancy I was after as I work remotely and travel between the UK and Bulgaria. In Bulgaria I have a fast cable connection, but the service was intermittent so I purchased a RUT956 as failover when the cable goes down. Then after 18 months I decided to fit one in my van and realised if I ran both into a load balancer I could use 4 SIM cards. That way I don't need to swap SIMs every time I get to Bulgaria. I just set a limit on roaming data on my UK SIMs and everything switches over automatically when I get to Bulgaria.
Amperage, amperage, amperage !!! ..... surely the #1 factor in evaluating a mobile router (how many days can your van stay on-line without hook-up, especially with you absent - I leave my webcams on and my router on for security, but even a pocket 4g router will drain a 120ah Lithium on it's own in a month which ain't good when teh solar is covered in snow and you're trying to keep the LiFePO4 above zero) ?

Going to give this a go here in Spain and see how it works out, ordered direct from GL inet Europe and with a bit of discount got it for €396 euros shipped, so good price I think. Will test it with Vodafone Spain and see what we get
Just as an update, router arrived from Germany nd have set it up - only using internal aerials at the moment but using a Vodafone Spain SIM card the download speed increased from 75mb to 122mb and the upload from, 33mb to 59 mb, . I was well impressed how easy to setup, now considering an external aerial when budget allows as the poynting here in Spain are mega expensive

A nice enough modem but lacks the polished experience the Teltonkia offers. Particularly when it comes to connection maintenance, pinging and mobile data reset. I haven't seen this feature yet in the x3000

Hi, love your vids and as I’m about to install a new WiFi system and electrical system in my van in the next few months I am watching all of them! One question as was wondering, with the increasing use of eSIMs these days, are there any mobile routers that will take an eSIM? It would appear to be the way forward. I think there is a Mifi that takes them but I want a proper router.
It's a great question - but I'm afraid I am not aware of any! As you say, there are a few MiFi battery type devices but they are 4G and none that I know have the ability to connect an external antenna.
I think it may be some time before we start seeing them in Routers as I suspect more routers are used in fixed locations rather than mobile, so for most customers an eSim would add little benefit. But you never know - ultimately I suspect physical SIMs will phase out but I think we are some years from that.
Fantastic review however, I would definitely be using EE if I wanted maximum performance in a 4G area and also because they cover it just substantially better than 3s. I use both networks on my home broadband and get over a gigabit on both networks with this device. Really good review thank you
Your video review has neglected the single most important point. The GL-X3000 uses a Qualcomm X62 modem chip and the Netgear M6 PRO uses the far superior Qualcomm X65.
I wouldn’t say the X65 was far superior to the X62.
X62 has slightly lower peak performance potential but otherwise they have very similar capabilities.
From my perspective the limitations of the Netgear being a consumer focused router way outweighs the marginal potential benefit of the X65 which would likely only be apparent in near perfect cellular conditions.

I have bought the GL-XE3000NR (one with the battery), and I am trying to figure out what APN settings are needed for a SMARTY sim. the device doesn't seem to offer the same fields as we would expect, Instead its looking for Protocol (fixed as QCM?), Port = /dev/mhi_QMID . Have you managed to unravel this conundrum by any chance?

I have the same issue but with an EE SIM just can’t find how to enter the APN settings in the parameter fields provided on the GL-3000, - any chance you could screen shot settings please so I can possibly see what I’m doing wrong

In T-Mobile GPS is a very important feature in a router as they often sell internet locked to a location of your home
This is not something I’ve heard of as we don’t have T-Mobile any longer here in the UK.
Other than the Teltonika range of routers and obviously phones I’m not aware of many routers that have GPS built in.
@@ExploreVanUK I live in Poland and they give us antennas in T-Mobile with built-in GPS. Its an antenna with a WAN connection. Now T-Mobile will enforce this geolocation on other countries. At least a youtuber Nater Tater said that in his latest vid. And yeah I've been browsing the web for few last days and there's no better solution than Waveform 4x4 + RUTX50 for T-Mobile wireless. The antenna T-Mobile gives is crappy, it can get to 110Mbit/s but there's no specification and it looses signal during the day even on strong POE (I've tried many). Antenna is produced by Wistron Neweb, but when you browse their site it looks like some chinese startup. Only on forums I've found the max gain of that T-Mobile antenna could be 10dBi, no mention about gains for exact frequencies so I would say its mediocre, most antenna producers write that their max gain is high. And it's not MIMO4x4 for sure. Can't wait until I get my ultimate set.

My iPhone 13 Pro Max gets faster 5g wifi speeds than my spitz ax 3000 with an external 4x4 mimo 5g antenna 😢

In a good signal area this is entirely possible and normal. iPhones 13 has a Qualcom Snapdragon X60 modem which performs very well, where the internal phone antennas are able to utilise the available cellular bands.
Where the benefits of the external antenna come in is as you get to the margins of coverage. EG you will get a bigger area where you are able to connect to a 5G tower than you will on your phone and the performance drop off as you get further away from any signals will be improved with the external antenna.
If only Apple included external antenna connections on their phones!
Terrible experuence with a Nighthawk 6450 in Italy. Warning message about extreme high temperatures popping upbon the duspkay every quarter of an hour. I gave it back to Amazon after payung 990 Euros!!!. Now I'm waiting for my money back. I'd likevto try wuth a ZTE 5120. Have someone tested or tried it?

We've not tried the ZTE I am afraid. Though having a built in battery and charging and its smaller physical size might make it susceptible to high temperatures too.
These tests make you smile. Rather does the apps select the ca bands? Is it possible to do cell lock?
Bands can be selected manually or automatically and can also be locked to Tower ID.
Because of this great review I switched just as I was about to buy a RUTX50 to the GLX3000 instead. I've also subscribed, and am eagerly taking in your other videos. You mentioned in one of the comments that you use a DC voltage stabilizer for this device. But what about all the other DC devices in my van? Do I really need one for each? I have a whole suite of Victron products, including a Multiplex II so I'm not concerned about the AC signal. But after your comment I looked into it a little and got confused as to whether I needed to worry about the stability of my DC supply for various devices. Maybe you could do a video on this topic?
Hi, it may be over kill but particularly since moving to a Lithium battery set up where the voltage when charging can get up to 16v, I prefer to use stabilised power supplies on more sensitive / expensive equipment that don't confirm they have a high tolerance for voltage variation.
EG I don't on Teltonika routers as they state they can be used from 9v to 30v But for the Home / Consumer Routers / TV / Satbox as they state 12v I do.
For simpler equipment lighting etc ro equipment specifically designed for use in campervan / caravans that I expect to have a higher tolerance of voltage fluctuations I don't bother.
OK -- I was thinking that maybe I could get one device that would stabilize the voltage to my DC panel and then all my DC loads would be stabilized. I wonder why that wouldn't work? If it doesn't, it seems according to what you've written, I have to do work to figure out which things are sensitive. Anyway, once again a great video! I watched it a second time and would only suggest that you somehow speed thru all the times when Internet speed is being measured.
Hi, yes that would be an option but again may be overkill as you would need to size the stabilised supply for the current of all your items being on at the same time to be safe. It really depends what you are planning to power.

Many thanks for the video, very usefull. Im just looking on the solwise website and they offer the new poynting mimo 4, 4-1 antenna with 4x4 mimo ports only. Would this antenna better suited to the gl_x3000 router rather than the 7-1 version? am i right in thinking this would use all 4 ports/antenna cables available on the router as if using the mimo 4, 7-1 antenna there would 3 ports/cables not used? kind regards Allan.
The 7-2 version is best suited if you plan to use it to connect to WiFi hotspots at all as this has a 2x2 WiFi antenna as well as the 4x4 LTE.
If you don’t plan to connect to WiFi hotspots you could leave the on unit WiFi antennas on the Router and use the 4-1 for the 4x4 LTE.
Personally I would go for the 7-1 (it’s just the GPS antenna that is unnecessary). As you can see in the video having the external WiFi antenna is useful.

can you just connect it to the van battery with 11Vdc - 15,4Vdc? Or does it need exactly 12Vdc?
It would probably be fine connected direct to the van but just to be on the safe side I always use a regulated power adapter with anything that doesn’t specifically quote its safe voltage range.

You have a couple of options with the potential move to the GL-X3000.
1. Use your 3-12 for 2 of the antennas and the supplied on-unit antennas on the other 2 - this will maximise the connection on the primary bands, but would to some degree reduce the performance on further aggregated bands or even make them not possible to connect to at all. But it would work and in strong areas would work ok. Essentially this is how your M5 router would be working now as it only has the connections for the 2 external antennas.
To maximise the performance you could:
a: add an additional 2x2 Mimo antenna (ie the same as the 3-12 you already have. to connect to the 2 extra LTE connections, whilst continuing to use your existing 3-12
b: sell on your current 3-12 and buy a 4x4 mimo compatible antenna - this would give you the option to get one with integral WiFi antennas as well to utilise the external WiFi antenna connections on the GL-X3000.
I can imagine there is a reasonable market for the 3-12 as lots of people out there have routers with 2x2 connections. Obviously if you were selling on the M5 you could bundle it.
My choice would be to go with a Poynting MiMo4-17 www.solwise.co.uk/A-MIMO-4-17. But I do know its an extra expense!

Hi John, yep the A-MIMO-3-V2-17 would be perfectly suited - it's a little physically bigger than the Mimo4 but we've used one for the past couple of years before the Mimo4 came out and it has been great.

I currently have a pointing 5-1 arial ie 2 lte, 2 Wi-Fi, 1 gps. If I was to use 2 of the lte as external and 2 using the internal supplied aerials what would the effect be?
Hi, as you can see in the video the unit performs pretty well just with its on unit antennas, it will obviously perform best with all the antenna connections made to external antennas but there is likely to still be a benefit if you connected the 2x2 externa antenna to two connections and left the on unit on the others. You would need to experiment with which connections gave the most benefit as it would depened on the bands available as to which antenna connections would benefit most from the external antenna.
I would recommend adding a second 2x2 LTE Antenna so that you can have all connection to external antenna to get the most out of the GL-X3000
What is the most important LTE FDD statistic? Is it RSRP or RSSI or RSRQ or SINR?
They all play there part on performance, essentially Signal strength, quality and amount of interference can all impact the actual speed/bandwidth you are able to use.
I don't know but I don't think it's a fair comparison between mobile Hotspot (router) and a regular router or not? It's clearly netgear m6 have good features for a mobile Hotspot if there is a cheaper and better than m6 & m6 pro tell me if it is possible
If you need it to be mobile the GL-X3000 Spitz AX is available with a built-in battery as the GL-XE3000 Puli AX
Personally I would preference the ZTE MU5001 over the Netgears, but neither would have the features and flexibility of the GL-iNets.

Hey! It is 12v DC input (and I have heard it has a high tolerance) so will probably be fine connected direct, but to be on the safe side I use a 12v stabilised adapter like this one.

good morning, I am aware that this router has the "failover" function which is the function when a primary source ceases the connection (ethernet or sim 1) it automatically switches to the other (for example from ethernet to sim 1 or from sim1 to sim 2) . I am aware that it also has the "load balance" function, i.e. with multiple sources connected to the network (e.g. Ethernet, SIM 1 and SIM 2) and multiple connections (e.g. PC, tablet, home automation, video surveillance, etc.) with the load balance the bandwidth coming from the Ethernet is distributed for example to the tablet and video surveillance and that coming from the SIM card(s) instead between home automation and PC). I would like to know between the two routers "GL.Inet Splitz x3000 vs TELTONIKA RUTX50 , it is possible to have the connection from all 3 sources (or at least 2) at the same time to have the total sum of speed and bandwidth on a single connected device (e.g. PC for heavy downloads). Thank you
Hi - its a good question. My understanding is that the Load balancing is based on a connection basis - rather than a device basis.
eg if your laptop establishes multiple TCP connections to various web servers, these connections will be balanced across the multiple WAN interfaces defined in your load balancing setup.
What this wouldn't benefit is where you were carrying out a high load single task eg downloading a file from a server using a single connection, its speed will be limited by the speed available on the single WAN it has utilised.
It's worth noting that, as the GLX 3000 and RUTX50 only have a single modem, you can't load balance across 2 SIMs, as only 1 Sim can be connected to the cellular network at one time. You could however load balance across a WiFi connection, Wired LAN Connectiona and a Cellular connection.

@@ExploreVanUK Ok thanks for the reply. Reading the manuals of the two routers (GL.Inet Splz GLX3000 Ax and Teltonika RUTX50) It could be that I misunderstood, but this is what I understood:
MULTIWAN: the router has the ability to access the web network from multiple places (Ethernet - Sim1-Sim2). Precisely for this possibility of multi-access at the same time, there are the options:
1 - "Failover" mode which in the event of disconnection from the primary source (Ethernet), automatically switches to the secondary (sim1) or tertiary (sim2) source. The priority order is an example but could not necessarily be in this case order. It depends on the priorities given in the settings: so it could also be primary source (SIM 2), secondary source (Ethernet) and tertiary source (SIM 1) or other combinations.
2 - "Load Balance" this mode allows you to balance the available bandwidth coming from multiple sources (Ethernet, SIM 1 or SIM 2, Tethering etc.), on each connected device equally, in case there are multiple connections to the router (such as tablet, notebook, PC, home automation, etc.). Therefore it is bandwidth drawn from multiple sources but distributed to multiple connected devices.
Considering that the router will be connected to both the home fiber (which in my case has little bandwidth (50Mb) + approximately another 100Mb of the 5G sim card) I would like to combine the two bands to be used in a single connection (home PC). So what I would like to know instead is whether with multiple sources (at least Ethernet + a single SIM given that the modem is unique) and only 1 connected device is it possible to have the sum of the bandwidth and therefore the speed coming from 2 sources but with only one connected device. A sort of multiwan but with the load balance concentrated on a single connected device that performs heavy downloads in which the bandwidth and speed must come from the ethernet device and the SIM
@maxastuto Multiwan is just the generic term for having the ability to connect to more than one Wide Area Network (eg cellular, Wired, WiFi.) Failover and Load Balancing are different settings for the Multiwan.
This means how the PC can use the load balanced multiple WANs depends what you are asking the PC to do.
When load balancing one device can use bandwidth across multiple WAN connections for different tasks, but not for the same task.
Eg when load balanced the PC could use one TCP connection via the cellular for watching Netflix and one connection using the wired LAN to download a file (from a single location) at the same time.
But it couldn’t use part of the bandwidth from the cellular and part of the bandwidth from the wired LAN to just download the file faster.
However, if the file was in multiple locations and downloaded via a torrent it could download part of the file from one location on one WAN and another part of the file from another location on another WAN at the same time.
If you do really need a connection that exceeds 100 Mbps to carry out a single task - point to point - then you would need to look at IP bonding either via software or hardware.

Yes you can, obviously you wont get the benefit of 5G speeds but it still performs well on 4G.
HI. Thankyou for your review. I am currently trying to decide between the RUTX 50 and the GL-X3000 for my campervan. I see on Amazon they are now offering 25% of this router so £366 Which seems a good deal. The RUTX50 with your Discount on Solwise Is around £450. I will have poynting Mimo V17 on the roof so all antennas will be outside to give me the best chance of a good signal. I was going to go for the RUTX50 but this new device is a little cheaper and looks a little easier to use for a novice. If you was going to buy one of these 5G routers. Which one would you choose? Is the RUTX50 a bit more complicated to set up and use over the GL-X3000? I would love your Opinion as I know your knowledge on this subject is vast. That's great to hear that the discount has been increased.
Given what you have said about your usage I think in your circumstances and at that price I would go with GL-X3000 I did find it easier to set up and get running. The App was particularly useful and easy to understand for checking how it was performing / connected and what devices were connected etc.
The RUTX50 is still great and definitely a more robust design and being Cat 20 rather that Cat 19 may be ever so slightly better performing, but I would say it was a bit harder to get your head around everything it can do and has features you probably wouldn't make use of.
Either way you end up with a great router!

Hi. Thankyou for your Advice. I did purchase the GL X3000 from Amazon £366. I need to buy a 12v Cigarette socket 2.5 amp power lead for the Device but cant seem to find a 2.5amp Version. I dont want to damage to Router using the wrong lead. On Amazon they seem to be 2amp. Some Advice would be great Please. I see you were using the router in your Van so Assume you have the correct lead. Where would I find the correct one. Thankyou.@@ExploreVanUK

Hi Paul, technically I’m told the Router would be fine run direct from the 12v leisure system in a van as it has a good voltage tolerance.
But just to be on the safe side I use one of these regulated power supplies. amzn.to/3SxCnk2 which is rated to 5 Amps.

@@markpearson8360 Personally I would hard wire in a fused accessory socket and then use the plug in adapter, but you could use a Buck-Boost such as this one to hard wire it. amzn.to/42IcUYp I would always suggest adding suitable fuses.

@@markpearson8360 To be fair one of my bugbears is suppliers that include every lead under sun, irrelevant of what you need, not only does it ultimately put the price up for everyone, but you end up with a ton of useless leads that end up in landfill somewhere.
I do agree that a "Home" version with mains adapter and a "Mobile" version with car adapter would be good idea. But even then you would still need to wire in an accessory socket.

Unfortunately for Netgear, adding Pro to the Name, 6e WiFi, a higher "theoretical" 5G speed (that is never likely to be seen in reality due to network infrastructure) and a bigger screen, doesn't make it a Professional Standard Router and at an eye-watering £900 it is around twice the price of the GLX3000 or the Teltonika. In our opinion, Netgear are again very much taking advantage of their Brand name and marketing to tempt consumers to an extremely expensive basic Router.

Hi there are lots of things that could impact the performance so it’s very difficult to say what is best with out experimenting.
It could be that the tower is overloaded causing the bandwidth to be lower or that it has limited bandwidth to start. It could be congestion just on the band the CPE is using or it could be across all bands. Or it could be to do with signal.
I would say signal is unlikely given your proximity to the tower (assuming you know that tower is for your network.)
A more professional router where you can configure the band to use may help you avoid congestion but if it is across all bands it wouldn’t help.
My starter would be try moving the location of your CPE to see if it improves if it doesn’t vary it’s likely to be congestion rather than signal.
If you have a 5G phone I’d put a sim of the same network in it and go closer to the tower and see if it has better speeds.
Ping latency will also vary depending on the reason for the lower speed. So afraid it’s a case of trial and error on this one.

when I move my router, up it have a better signal. on 5g from 3gbs to 55gbs, would you recommend using the hacked tool what allows to you swap bands on the locked one? ithink my router is a 4g first and 5g underneath to boost up speeds?>? idk what that is called. cause there no 5g only option to select.
also my 4g is giving me around 100gbs cell tower same place as the 5g, there's only 2 career towers I can swap between here, and yea idk if they are throttling me from beginning . but I dont think so, when I have the combine signal of 75gbs 4g and 55gbs 5g on the test internal on router, I sometime see 200gbs speeds I even saw 300 one time, but maybe thats just luck on the bands it selects and users and then distance to tower.

Does anyone know how to determine the connected cell tower id on the X3000 and how to correlate to the towers shown on cellmapper. I've previously used the ZTE 888 router and it clearly showed the tower id the same as that reported on cellmapper, the X3000 gives an ID that looks like hex but doesn't seem to relate to anything on cellmapper - thanks!
There is a bit of leg work to do this, but this is how I do it.
Run AT commands:
AT+CREG=2
Should return "OK"
AT+CREG?
Should return 2,1,"location area code in HEX", "CELL ID in HEX"
Run the HEX Cell ID through a Hex to decimal converter
Use Cell Mappers Cell ID eNB Calculator www.cellmapper.net/enbid and enter Decimal Cell ID
Go to Cell Mapper Map and Search with the eNB from calculator - should return connected mast

@@honeypablo74 Oh yeah forgot that, though when on 5G connection sometimes I find it shows the secondary LTE connection in the GUI and the 5G in the AT or vice versa so useful to consider both.
Ooh this is good information as im desperately trying to learn as much as possible about getting wifi into my camper van. I need to be able to video conference call with as little risk as possible to interruptions so speed needs to be considered. Im looking at the GL-X3000 thanks to your video, but im also looking at the MIMO-19 rather than the link you have supplied which looks to be the MIMO-17. Hi, for the GL X3000 the Mimo 4 17 is the perfect partner. The Mimo 4 19 adds additional WiFi antennas to make it 4x4 Mimo for WiFi but as the GL X3000 has 2x2 WiFi connections, two of the connections on the antenna would be wasted so there is no point depending the extra, in my opinion.

No worries, Yep that’s right, the 4 LTE cables go to the 5G and the WiFi to the WiFi. For the WiFi connections you’ll need to use the adapters that come with the Mino 4 as they have slightly different SMA connections so you don’t accidentally mix up the antennas.

Hello after owning a glx3000 for less then week I had a headache with it not as good as people make out to be and need know how use at commands and other features. If not tech savvie you won't get good speeds but if u want to use this more as link as extender then gives good speeds but not with 5 g. So example if I have lead with my vergin media box rn it gives me 700 download n dubbed up load 179. But that being said. All not perfect after alot Hassel trying set this up. It stopped working all together and resetting it to default just completely destroys it stopping you getting back to ip page trust me don't waste your money despite specs not as good as promised

Would be good if you can share a bit more detail about the problem as it’s hard to work out what it actually was from what live written.
We got it up and running really simply without any need to get deep in the menus, unless you want to.
What networks were you using it with and in what area out of interest.

@@ExploreVanUK hello. Sure. At 1st it was as simple as my SIM not working later on once it eventually worked I looked into how to config it and advised to use a phone IMEI to stop throttling. I presume since my phone has 2 IMEI that I can use other one so it don't clash. I also did this otherwise you don't get best speeds out of it. After that looking into other features on WiFi to see what it had to offer as soon as I did everything after that it stopped working completely after 5 mins and ip page was stuck in loop n WiFi saying connecting not connect and so. On if you know more on IMEI if I'm correct with it let me know as I am thinking ordering glx agian to give it one last try. Sorry for late reply

Certainly possible I would say - it is the Latency that is most important with a Ping recommendation of less than 100ms for Sim racing - in our tests in this video the ping was never more than 66ms.
