  • During a short stop off at RAF Leuchars back in the day we saw the OCU at work, some nice views of the phantoms taking off.

I had a few days at Leuchars in the summer of 1990 - the evening I arrived the OCU were doing night-quals until 2200. Same time there were four F-4F's and two RF-4F's there on exchange. And don't get me started on the 'visitors'.
Happy and much missed days. All the best from New Zealand.

Leuchars was my first posting after training (1973), I worked in missile city - as it was known. In those days it was 23 Sqn Lightnings and 43 Sqn Phantoms. In Jan '74 I went on a Phantom weapons course at Coningsby, and in Jan of the following year I completed a course on the Jaguar at Lossiemouth, prior to being posted to Brüggen. Memories.

Flew into Leuchars in 1994 with a minor Royal as passenger, more service than we expected! Aircraftmen with multiple fire extinguishers, senior officers greeting us haha . Happy days indeed.

One of my favourite postings. I worked on the simulator there for 5 years.

Love that you can hear the radar sweep from A/T control on the recording in the background 😍

Thanks. I've often heard those clicks on videos at Coningsby. Watchman no doubt. 👍🏻

My old Sqn, left there about 6 months before this vid. The jet with the blue fin will probably be XT900 (CO).

Thank you for your service, a long time ago I used to deliver fuel to Leuchers by train, long after the phantoms though, great memories.

Back in the day, you could get anything at Leuchars. from the regular 12.00 flyby of F-111s to any tankers from the RAF or USAF & everything in between. Sad to see it close a RAF base, but that's progress !!.

I was Sqn Ops on the OCU at this time, something different for me. Had a great time during my posting, even had two trips in the back seat, fantastic.

Do I hear the faint sound of a radio scanner in the video? Someone must have had deep pockets 🤣 to have had an Airpsy R2 in those days would have been amazing.

It’s quite weird to see the flimsy wooden fence to keep the public out in those pre 9 11 days. I wish it was still the same!
