I find Reason #4 (release of the unpleasant fumy smells) to be the biggest reason to aerate wines (medium+ and full bodied reds being my favorite). Although I have tried upwards of 3-4 hours to great success, using an aerator spout into glass works just fine without the hassle... except the planning required to let it sit for that time. 😀

I've always decanted the whole bottle but slowed down and started pouring 1 serving into my decanter. It worked, except I should have preloaded the next glass an hour ahead of time instead of just a swish through it from the bottle to the glass. It works for sure. But, like I said, I didn't want to have 5 glasses in 2 hours. So, I had 5 in 5 with 5 decants. I think I will do half a bottle at a time. Next time.

Just found your channel and planning to really dig into it later. I’m a career server that somehow got this far without studying wines and decided to finally get into it. CZcams, including your channel, has been a great resource along with books and other sites.
I do have a question. I know smell is important but would you say it is a necessity to be a certified sommelier? I’d love to work on being one at one point but I have absolutely no sense of smell. Thank you!
