Everybody knew these sanctions would be a real disaster from the beginning on: just because we are too dependent on Russian gaz and it is normal: cheap and close location. European nations:
"Yea... We are keen as mustard. Where do I sign?"
    Fast forward to 2022...
The EU is now protected by NATO. And guess who controls NATO? America wants to get rid of Russia, and the EU followed. Now the European nations realized that there are obligations besides the 'special grants'. They must abide by the EU rules. Talking about rules, Ursula Von Der Leyen knows a few. She was talking about a grand scheme for the EU, a green future, free of fossil fuels. She demanded solidarity from the nations.
But solidarity is only possible when individual's self interests aren't threatened. Now cracks are forming as each individual EU member are demanding "exception" and "special circumstances". They had better sort out their solidarity before winter sets in. Perhaps they could do "group hugs" to keep each other warm?

Well researched and bias free as we have come to trust. The presenter was lenient about Germany's blatant hypocrisy from February and before but there was too much else to reveal.
Hungary opposed the oil ban airily ordered by Ms von der Leyen (without a Council or even Commission vote) because their refineries would take years to switch to a different sort of crude oil and even Turkey's new Black Sea rigs produce similar crude to Russia. The issue was a technical one but remote bureaucrats with no legitimate expertise in anything practical are too high and mighty to have any research done.
Poland has large reserves of gas and is secure in refined oil by various means and good relations with fuel secure states not even in the EU -- Norway and Britain. ACTUAL trade is about trust between people and Anglo-Polish relations have a long history. Poland also tends to stand by Hungary dating back to the 1950s.
A major reason why Iberian states oppose VDL's wishes is because they face the Atlantic and although the USA is in decline South American countries have the right demographic for balanced development (to a green agenda) and a relationship is natural.
Italy is not in a good energy position but this could change with mixed initiatives inclusive of Turkish and African sources as well as the longer term development of Eurasian trade and port development to east central Europe and the Balkans. Austria is key in this and the Benelux countries will cease to be as important as hitherto in European trade to the west.
France likes to stay on good terms with Germany but on Energy France pleases itself and was never as stupid as Germany in risking a single source of energy on tap. Indeed France imports from Britain as it works on restoring its reactors and the oldest dedicated AC cable in Europe is under the Channel and dates back to 1953. It was a national venture not subject to EU rules at any time.
Estonia's use of Russian crude is blatant profiteering and has made the country unpopular in the region, especially with Poland, Lithuania and Finland because it raises legal issues of protection which could involve Kaliningrad.
The EEC as a trading union (carrying a peace dividend) worked in the wake of WW2 but its change to the EU and expanding political entity slowed development and favored some members more than others. When in danger of not getting policies passed by the Council it notoriously used bullying tactics and pseudo 'law' which finally alienated the UK population to vote to leave the EU by open and public referendum. But all manner of tactics and sanctions were attempted to force the UK to change its mind -- notably using Ireland as a lever.
The patchy responses to the Ukraine war, broken promises and delays by such as Germany and a crucial division between US ideas in the conflict and excessive 'personality posing' rather than critical analysis and care of real people devalued VDL's authority and that of the EU Commission.
In no way could the EU have ever been mistaken for a 'power', let alone a 'superpower'.

To be honest, Putin is a reasonable man and has put up with a lot from everybody when he didn't have to, so if they want to have a good relationship with the man he's all ears, the problem is, the EURO zone seems to be controlled by external factors and that means none of them will stay in power too long to even be effective enough for their country and will leave office sooner or later.

EU is not a sitting duck. Take the 6 tranches of sanctions wholeheartedly applied by all members dealing an unprecedented blow to Russian economy, finance, logistics, airtransport, automobile manufacturing, shipping, gas pipeline maintenance, etc.Russia can not sell even the exempted items like fertilisers and food grains. Neutral Swiss and Austria too joined in some. The problem arises only in respect of energy products like coal, oil , gas and LNG. The potential impact of disruption of gas is humongous. Portugal and Hungary are on different ends on the dependency scale. EU is only a union ,neither more nor less. Members are sovereign nations individually responsible to their own population and parliament for the citizens' welfare.
Of course war is abominable. Many countries have accepted Ukranian refugees without murmur. What more could you expect ?
But the war is not any country's responsibility except Ukraine's. Why every one should suffer beyond a point for Ukraine's faults and fallacies? Remember how Ukraine aggressively talked to Canada and Germany not to respectively return and receive the repaired gas turbine. They want others to suffer more for Ukraine's cause.
All that Russia wanted was implementing the 2014 Minsk Accord guaranteed by Germany and France which envisaged giving limited a88387-17520utonomy to Donetsk and Lugansk within the nationhood of Ukraine , Ukraine's then President PETRO POROSHENKO now declared that he signed the agreement only as a time delay tactics and without any intention of following it.Ukraine built up its military heavily , entrenched it in Donbass and attacked its own citizens killing 15000 of them since 2014 and planned to take back Crimea. France and Germany were less than half hearted in applying pressure on Ukraine to implement the accord. Contrast it with their present energy and enthusiasm in supporting Ukraine. Though unlawful Russia invaded Ukraine as it could not bear ethnic Russians getting butchered and entertain losing its Naval base Crimea.
If Russia wanted to weaponise gas why did it build, with German help, the $ 10 billion Nordic Stream 2 pipeline that would now be supplying more gas without any hassle?
Russia depends on Europe for money and technology to the same extent that Europe depends on Russia for cheap and reliable energy. It is a mutually profitable arrangement sabotaged by USA that felt losing its grip over Europe if it integrates better with Russia.USA was ably supported by non EU member UK less dependent on Russia for gas.
It is this awareness and guilty conscience that Macron displays in trying not to damage relationship with Russia beyond repair. Russia and Europe need each other. Europe has not been wise in its reaction and response. Neither does it have the courage to discard America's exhortations to protect its own interests.

West is trying to defeat Russia militarily. The advanced weapons which the west supplied helped Ukraine to show resistance, but at the same time Ukrainians are losing men daily about 150-200 people and this will effect their morale. Russians outnumber Ukrainians multiple times. Overall, I think this is a senseless war.
