    I use 2cm of clay balls at the bottom and put sphagnum on top. Not sure why, but that works pretty well.
    I discovered that even if by mistake you put too much water, and it should drown the sphagnum,
    the LECA floating capability keeps it at the right level.

    • @WindowsillNepenthes
      @WindowsillNepenthes  Pƙed 2 lety

      Did you try leaving the LECA in 0 ppm water for a week and then test the water? Is it leaking minerals or not? I think Sphagnum im less sensitive to minerals than Nepenthes.

      Ok, trying to make it short here. a)Wash twice with tap water - b)one more with 0PPM. c)Let in water for one week/change water over 50PPM - d)After 2-3weeks it stops leaking hard, and falls down under 20-25PPM per week - till it becomes less than 30ppm per month ( I prepare that balls seldom and only Bottom pot for CP like Sarracenia - I used also for a Nep, short of material and of a better solution )
      For Sphag I stop at c) 1/2days...
      Sphag doesn't really care for what I saw > I have treated a germinating plate with tap water 200PPM because I forgot to rewash đŸ€ >I drained it two days later, just in case, but it seems it didn't mind it at all!

      @@WindowsillNepenthesİ have grown sphagnum with regular high calcium alkaline tap water and it grows. İ think it's tolerant of minerals in water to some extent but you sould be careful because the water it holds propably has still minerals that the moss didn't use so you can't use this moss with carnivorous plants unless you wash it with distilled water to remove them.

      Usually once topping the pots, I have to continue to spray them once a day as it is dryer on a windowsill. But in a greenhouse/terrarium-like environment, it should be fine with spraying every 2-3 days I think.
      And for me, I never revived dead sphagnum... I guess it depends of where the sphagnum come from and how old is it.

    Nutrients !!!! Try Fogponics with small quantity of nutrients. Real peat bogs have floating moss on water - they get the nutrients from the water below full of dead and decaying plant and animal matter (the water is full of bacteria). The plants capture insects, but are themselves overtaken by the moss - so the moss gets the nutrients eventually, and the decaying moss provides habitat for new plants to root in. It's symbiosis, so don't grow it in isolation - you need the combination of plants.

    I aint even a carnivorous plant grower. I have just two of them. I just thought this would be an incredibly POG way to do aroid propagation:-D In a live moss tray:-D Lets go:-D

    Many thanks whats the best way to propagate the most volume?

      @WindowsillNepenthes  Pƙed 2 lety

      For volume, the mini greenhouse + additional full spectrum light is the best.
      As soon as the sphagnum in thicker than 1 inch, you cut the top and lay it down on the window screen. It's not fast, but with 1 'mother tray' you should be able to do 2-3 trays a year with no problem ;)

    I had posted a link to a video on tiktok with some lush moss and I wanted to ask what it is but I think it was flagged as spam 😅 right now I'm sad my drosera capensis and drocera spatula (just got from etsy) doing bad, first slow growing from windowsill, I thought not enough sun 😱 and I put them outside with my venus fly traps and I think they were attacked by thrips or mites or both, with leaves not developing correctly 😱. So I brought them back inside after I sprayed with insecticide and they are not looking good. I will try to post video again.

      Really sorry for you. I can't really help with drosera, didn't have experience. And yes videos and links are blocked.

      @@alexisdiaz2875 You don't have to, but it will help. Actually, sphagnum moss can take a more fertilizer than carnivorous plants.
