    Lifetime stats In 18 seasons playing for the same team: .312 batting average, .515 slugging, .418 OBP. 309 home runs. 1261 rbi's. 514 doubles, including The Double that basically saved baseball in Seattle and built Safeco Field. These are all awesome stats that proves the year-in year-out consistency of this professional hitter. You've seen the respect shown by his contemporaries. He's beloved as an icon in the PNW. Heck, the man has a major offensive award in his name! It's awarded for excellence at your position. It's called The Edgar Martinez Award. Hitters with weaker stats (like this year's Alan Trammell) get into the HOF. Why is this man not in the HOF?

    IF we allow time to forget the amazing contribution that Edgar Martinez continues to make in Baseball, by not inducting him into the Hall of Fame (with 2019 his last year to be considered for the Vote), we truly fail in how we honor greatness. I am so fortunate to have seen him play - and as I now watch his impact on the Mariner lineup as the Hitting Coach, I will be happy if I live to see his Induction. It will be a great day for me, as a fan.

      Steven DiBernardo you are so right! It was and has been debated about his years as a DH and that it may hinder his chances. He'd better make it! I can remember in his last two or three years when there would be a situation where a pinch runner couldn't be sent in. He'd run those bases like a champ, chugging along like a locomotive. He and Cammy were my faves! And that Ichiro guy, he's pretty good.
      Do you remember the commercials they'd do and the signs the fans would come up with?

    • @stevendibernardo1015
      @stevendibernardo1015 Před 6 lety

      Martha Jane Yes I certainly do remember those great signs and the really funny commercials the Mariners had then. One day in May, 2002, I was so happy when Cameron hit is four homers at "Guaranteed Rate Field" - oh, I loathe most of the "new" baseball stadium names!
      He could have had another one or *gasp* even two more, if you remember his swing during that game. He was dialed in! One of their pitchers hit him during his 5th at-bat. In his 6th - he nearly cleared the fence again, but the ball was caught on the warning track.
      Thanks for the waltz down memory lane.

      Steven DiBernardo, you're most welcome. Do you remember this sign? "Ichi hits, Ichi throws, Ichi scores, allot in a row". I was watching the game with my mom that day and we couldn't stop laughing at that one. And of course, no going to bed, even on a work night, until the game was over.

    I saw Edgar on TV in a baseball tutorial where he spoke about his process . He would turn the pitching machine up to 150 miles per hour and sit in the box and just watch the balls for awhile and then he turned it down to 90 and he said it became like slow motion to him . Genus !! Congrats from Cleveland !!

      Will Rogan I'd root for the Red Sox from time to time. They've had some amazing players! When my sister and I were in school at UT Austin, We'd go to the Texas Chili Parlor and root for Boston in the CS and or Series. That one game, you know the one, Dang!

      Will Rogan Does the name Bucky Dent at 1st base ring any bells? To tell you the truth, I don't remember the exact year. If I think about the opposing team long enough, I'll remember, that and the year. Too many Cuba Libras I'm sure. They were at Fenway and I believe that lost the series for them. It's cheating to Google it so lmk. 💜⚾🎇🇺🇸

    • @willrogan955
      @willrogan955 Před 6 lety +1

      I gottcha. In October of 1978 in a one game play off game against the NY Yankees , Bucky Dent lofted a HR over the Green Monster in left which pretty much ended Boston's great season.
      In the 1986 WS against the NY mets , Mookie Wilson hit a grounder which went through the legs of first baseman Bill Buckner. The mets won that game and went onto win the WS. That's just a few of Red Sox heart breakers off the top of my head. But then came 2004 ! Big Papi got them to the top.

      I’d take Edgar over any of those guys. The guy just knows how to hit. A-rod would’ve never gotten his big contract from Texas without those early yrs learning from Edgar. He even said Edgar has a PhD in hitting. He hit for contact, power, and average, AND he can hit to all parts of the field. Edgar is one of the few guys you wouldn’t put a shift on for. Guys today don’t spray the ball everywhere the way Edgar did

    Per Hot Stove Stats:
    Martinez had 7 consecutive seasons where he had a .420 OBP or higher (min. 502 PA). Here’s the list of players since 1920 to have more consecutive seasons than Edgar:
    Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig. End of list.
    If that's not a Hall of Famer, idk what is.

    • @EchoesDistant
      @EchoesDistant Před 5 lety +3

      For the record, Ruth and Gehrig both hit from the left side. This makes Edgar maybe the best RH hitter, ever. Should have been First Ballot.

    People complain cause he didnt prioritise power and homeruns but thats what made him special. He hit for contact avg and when he wanted power.

    • @larrylindgren9484
      @larrylindgren9484 Před 5 lety +1

      Edgar hit it where you pitched it. I'd have loved to see them do the shift on Edgar. Oh my God he would have made them pay. He didn't upper cut swing like they do now. He hit doubles that put holes in the outfield walls it hit it so hard. Had he done what they do now which is swing for the fences he'd not be in the HOF. Oh he'd probably have 500+ HRs. But he'd have batted 225 like most hits do now and strike out 3 out of 4 at bats. Watching baseball now is painful. You watch the whole team standing in right field playing defense. You'd think a hitter would just lower the head of the bat and bat 1000% going the other way but no. Let's pull it into the defense for and out 15 out of 16 times. But at least that 1 time they hit a HR. Boring. It's just sad watching how bad baseball is now. Mike Trout is about the only hitter who is a true hitter anymore.

    • @Garrett1240
      @Garrett1240 Před 3 lety

      @@larrylindgren9484 Pitching is also so much better. I don't even know how one could purposely place balls where they want them in the field anymore with how good pitching has become, especially breaking balls which are breaking more than ever and are faster than ever.

    on that note, watching 1995 season that was your guys year. More guys need to have the professionalism in the game of baseball. They need to have the same professionalism as working man or even the military. if more Seattle Mariners took it as serious as Edgar did they would have better results.
