    NOTES/DISCLAIMER:
    It's important that we all understand, that as Autistic People, there is not a unified autistic experience. We all have different opinions and very different experience, and I think it's great to share those things.
    If you're a NeuroTypical watching, remember that this is just my experience as a NeuroDivergent Person.
    Hopefully, this video will inspire other NeuroDivergent People to share their experiences and how they relate, and maybe even do not, in the comments below.
    I encourage you to listen to and read as many Autistic experiences as possible to best understand Autistic People.
    I would LOVE to see more Autism vlogs by #ActuallyAutistic People.

    Self diagnosed 65 year old autist: I LOVE teaching, helping random people in town and having meaningful talks with people, strangers or well known. So:, I am sort of an extrovert. But I need alone time to refill my own strength.

    Before my diagnosis about six months ago I was a “social butterfly”. Or so people thought. I now realise I was masking and only behaved in a way people expected. It was exhausting. I am actually more comfortable with a few safe people.

    I'm also an introvert, but I am also adhd, which means sometimes I am really, really not. I also work in a large agency, and manage IT for like 20 sites and 300 people. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said 'even I enjoy spending time with a few SAFE people'. That struck a chord. I am an introvert, but a lot of my introversion is more adaption than nature: I will happily spend time with a bunch of neurodiverse/accepting/non-judgmental folks who (and this is the key) I don't have to mask around. If I have to (as I call it) 'put on the show' for people, I will only do so as long as I am being PAID to do so as required by my job, and I only do that because, ya know, food is nice. If I could live a life on my terms, I'd be pretty social with people who accepted me as me. A lot of neurospicy folks are not extreme introverts by nature, but extreme introverts by necessity. Masking is exhausting.

    Solid video, Lyric! I appreciate the effort that goes into trying to summarize all of these points fairly, given the wide range of autistic traits and experiences. I've struggled to explain some of these aspects of autistic life to others, and I haven't been as concise as you are here -- everything I say about autism, even in my own life, seems to require a qualification because exceptions come to mind (mine or the person I'm talking with) as soon as I make a general statement, and I end up struggling even more than usual to speak. From now on I should just start off by sharing this video, and then take things from there!
    As a clumsy walker / runner / skater / swimmer who somehow also manages to do well at playing the piano, soldering electronics, building detailed models from scratch, and drawing and painting, I definitely feel the spiky skill/ability profile you mentioned. I can assemble an intricate orrery and finesse all the different parts to move smoothly; just please don't be surprised if things go horribly awry when I pick it up and carry it across the room to put it on display!
    I'd definitely like to hear more about the double-empathy problem; I've seen it name-checked in various autism videos, but I don't recall it being defined or well-explained whenever it was brought up.
    Great work, here, as always! Happy Spring to you!

    Considering I was raised in Europe with people who embraced my quirks as positives, I got to see how a large number of people are plausible have been on the spectrum in the past to the present. I'm going to go for 1 in 10 people are on the spectrum. Majority of us are level 1 of needs, which is why we've been able to do so much over the span of human existence.
    I have made the suggestion to my library to consider picking up your book and like books to help more of us in the spectrum who do not have the means to buy your book. I hope it helps.

    Extrovert, late-diagnosed autistic adult here. As a young child I was very outgoing, and received energy from interacting with everyone. However, in grade school I was often misunderstood by peers and teachers, and very frightened of being perceived as different and weird. My subsequent quietness led to being labeled "shy", and I continued to perpetuate that myth because it was an easy coping mechanism to living day-to-day. In college I took one of those personality tests that labeled me as an introvert, assuming the draining of energy in social situations was due to interactions with people. In truth, my autistic mind is drained by over stimulation of the environment and/or masking to feel like I'm fitting in: i.e. saying the "right" things in a conversation. Nothing brings out the mask quicker than that awkward pause after I've said something! But I'm trying to not let it get to me so much, and plow forward with conversations regardless of what others think (or what I perceive others think).

      I am similar. I was mostly outgoing as a child. As a teenager I tested as an introvert due to abuse and bullying. As an adult my extraverted side came out again because I was around safer people. I do think I am more extroverted naturally. But I am not extremely extroverted.

    I am a non-binary gender fluid late diagnosed Autistic person. It was because of my unique way of thinking / problem solving / & overload shutdown (what others continue say) when I get two opposing ideas that prompted me to actually get diagnosed. Mind you it explains a lot of the misdiagnosis of my childhood teens and young adult. In addition to that I have hyper sensitivity energy issues when I am in groups over 10 or so. I tend to get totally overloaded with other people's energy that I end up collapsing. Love to hear more on the double empathy.

    I was/am a caretaker for disabled adults. But mostly autisitc. I always thought i was just REALLY talented at my job. It was my "calling." I always felt we just understood each other. I literally ignored my thoughts of being asd. For the SIMPLE fact, i had such strong (crippling at times) empathy for over a decade. If i had known that was such a lie sooner.😢

  • @strictnonconformist7369
    @strictnonconformist7369 Před 4 měsíci +1

    My climbing partner refers to me as being an extroverted introvert, which seems a bit contradictory.
    I have zero anxiety issues, however that happened, despite all the bullying I've experienced. I can readily be in larger groups of people, within limits. Too many people, and having a discussion is problematic for me, as a coworker observed while eating with coworkers at lunchtime. How much of that is auditory processing issues or whatever, I'm not sure.
    That being said, I'd go absolutely bonkers without having alone-time, and if I ever do have one or more roommates again, it needs to be one I'm married to, or it's just not worth it.
    Last year I discovered that besides emotional delayed processing, as a result of an experience as an audhd climber where I got hyperfocused while climbing and got tangled up in a rope in the way to the point of mild rope burn on my ear, that my brain waited until I was safely on the ground before it did a sensory playback of the climb, at least for tactile aspects: I also have aphantasia, so that wasn't a playback sense, unfortunately.
    My coordination, etc. does limit me in many aspects, and that, along with dyslexia, are the primary reasons I ended up in special education. Not the late-diagnosed ADHD/autism, or auditory processing, which I think the combination of those three were more important than those first two, or vision issues. I was lost as to what I should do, and when, and I think I was largely in sensory overload in my first attempt at first grade, and I wasn't connecting with everything and everyone around me. I did catch back up in the middle of third grade and jumped to fourth grade.

    Autism is not caused by any of those things, but I challenge you to go on keto diet (no carbs or sugar), cut out processed food and get your b vitamins especially b1 and magnesium levels checked. Get the diet and nutrition right and you still won't get jokes, you'll still be autistic, but you will lower your sensory sensitivity and focus better if you have adhd. I would have thought that was bunk until my daughter and I did it. It really did make a difference. I know people do not want to see this because it does not go with the limited carb rich diet that many autistic people are stuck on and some really cannot eat properly. So no, you cannot cause it with a bad diet, but you can make certain things worse.

    • @NeurodivergentRebel
      @NeurodivergentRebel  Před 4 měsíci

      I don’t disagree… I had to do keto for my health when I was burned out and it helped pull me out of burnout and get healthy again. Not for everyone… but really helped me. Plus my body hates sugar 🥲

      I feel bad, I should have also said that even though it does help, it really is not for everyone. I couldn't stay on it because after a month I was getting heart palpitations. I think people should go on it to reset in a way, but when it is not working anymore (like if they stop being able to sleep as well) they should go off it. Thing is after going off it, it is easier to avoid high carb eating because you loose your sweet tooth. I eat carbs now, but understand how to balance my diet so I don't have to constantly snack on carbs all day. I don't feel as clear as on keto, but clearer than I did when I was binging sugar and on a glucose spike roller coaster. @@NeurodivergentRebel
