The development team originally considered Egyptian mythology but because that era emphasized civilization, it would draw away from central theme of a "stranger in a strange place" -- Cory Barlog wanted focus on Kratos and his son exploring a barren and isolated land.
The entire game is presented as one single, uninterrupted shot. There are no load screens, cinematic cutscenes, or fades to black. The concept was inspired by a sequence in John Woo's 1992 film, HARD BOILED.
For the first time in the series, Kratos will not be voiced by TC Carson. He'll be voiced by Christopher Judge, best known for his role as Teal'c in Stargate SG-1. Sunny Suljic, who plays Atreus, was given significant input on casting his in-game father and because of their great chemistry, Judge was chosen for the role of Kratos.
Kratos' main offensive weapon will be a two-handed war axe called Leviathan. The Leviathan is a sea monster mentioned in the Hebrew Bible and it is speculated that the development team named the axe Leviathan as a reference to the intended ending for God of War 3, where the flooding and death of the Greek Gods lead to the creation of monotheism.
Kratos' son Atreus was nearly cut from the game to due difficulties in creating an AI companion. Instead, the developers looked to Naughty Dog for help, who had scrapped and rebuilt Ellie's AI in six months time. The collaboration didn't stop there -- the team also worked with Horizon Zero Dawn developer Guerilla Games.

I love hearing about game companies working together to fix a problem it would be so easy for every game company to have some form of rivalry with one another but I like that they’re willing to help each other like that.

The games industry is actually super collaborative basically all the time. After each project most devs leave and have to move to another studio, since most devs only get contracted for part of the process. While this sucks, one of it's few benefits is most devs have many, many contacts and friends at other studios, either because they worked there, or somebody from a previous project they have worked on now works there. I've had many a Dnd night where everybody was working at a different studio. =3
Sony's studios (and close 2nd party studios, like Insomniac) have had a long track record of communicating, and working with each other since the PS2 era.
It's only grew stronger once several started immolating Naughty Dog's post Uncharted formula for development.
Naughty dog letting santa Monica borrow some of their programming? That's teamwork for you.
Naughty has always been helpful like during the playstation 1 days when they were working alongside Insomniac in creating Crash and Spyro.

The axe's name is Poseidon's form when the Titans fought with the gods at Olympus.
Chris Judge was also the voice of D-Mob in Def Jam Vendetta and Def Jam: Fight for New York.

No. They clearly would make a trilogy. It is why they establish Thor and Odin. But they still may make Egipt one day as spin off or something. Japan stuff is cool, but there are already stuff like that so I would consider it low priority.

It is true. Unless you die or quit the game, the actual game play never jump cuts to anything. There are cutscenes, but the camera doesn’t cut to any specific view for the scene. It flows into position rather than jumping there. That also means the “cutscenes” are rendered in game. Making the scenes identical in graphics to the gameplay. Especially because you can change kratos’ and Atreus’ armor in game. So armor changes aren’t reverted to some arbitrary “canon” armor for the cutscenes.
Wait, so Atreus' AI is based off of Ellie's?!

I think we should TC Carson a big gratitude for his contributions on the GOW series, he made Kratos for who he is..
