Not a permanent fix! Get a new fuse.

Okay Boys & Girls, 'When' you use an Ohm meter to test continuity, ALWAYS make sure the power is off or disconnected. The goal is to NOT let the magic smoke out of the meter. Again, Ohms, or continuity testing.... Plan your tests, put the meter in VOLTS, and check for power. Do all your connections and tests looking for voltage first. If you have No Voltage, you are safe to use Ohms / Continuity testing. Let's all keep the magic smoke inside the meter. Nice Work Matt! This series is really going to help me.

Hey Mathew, I think it is extremely neighbourly of you to take the time and effort to give us your help and experiences fixing your outboard. I know that this could have been done quickly had you not had to video, work to the camera, hold things, and then edit it all. It is appreciated. You also speak very well, and you make it understandable. Thanks so much brother. I just happened to be doing this very job on a 1989 Mariner 30ELO. I have no remote controller with key switch, so I bought a 6 pole switch with push choke. Now I will Jerry-Rig my way through. If you happen to know where to get the 7 pin remote controller for this engine, maybe let me know? Anyways, I have yapped on enough. Thanks and warm regards, Cam.

tom Thanks. Sometimes it takes a total novice to explain it to other novices.

You are checking spark in a very difficult manner. All you need is a 5 dollar spark checker from Harbor Freight. Hooks up in line with the plug and has a bright orange flash if it has spark. Doesn't require removing the plug or manually spinning the motor. Works on every plug and every gas engine.

Sure. But if you don't have one...

Thanks, i had the same problem on my Suzuki. I've just brought a 40hp and trying to install a tachometer but can't find the tach cable/signal cable. But when i tried to look for continuity, both positive and ground where connected and i was a little worried that the outboard will burn out because of a short somewhere. I will check the ignition tomorrow if a switch the ignition on and see if the positive and ground is still showing a continuity between them. never though that a killswitch can do that. Thank man, big help

Hi Matt. You are going about your fault finding in a logical manner. Sometimes when working on vehicles the problem can sometimes be staring you right in the face and it is overlooked. You are doing a great job when you consider you are working on the water. If you want to test the plugs its a good idea to get a zip tie and attach the plug to the body of the outboard. Also its hard to check for spark in daylight as it is hard to see. When I was in learning about electronics we were taught the half split rule. Check your circuit for power half way between load and battery. If you have power look further up the circuit. If not go back. Great videos Matt. I have a Johnson 70 hp that needs attention. Hasn't been started in 10 years.

Love your outboard farm. I try to find out how to kill my 2006 Merc 90 hp without control cable. The gay keeps the cable. Do you have a Merc plug diagram? Thx.

My outboard was starting off the key, i turned it off via the key and started again then tried to turn it off again via the key but it wouldnt turn off. I had to disconnect the fuel so it would eventually cut out, any ideas why? Could it be the key ignition or the Solenoid? The Solenoid is newly fitted recently but has been fine since changing
