- Mallorca is famed for its smooth roads and epic climbs, making it ideal for a road cycling paradise! But recently people have been discovering that there's a whole new dimension to Mallorca, and that's its gravel riding scene. Manon and GCN en Español's Bernat meet up with ex-pro Jan Eric Schwarzer, who shows them around a local gravel route displaying the best bits of Mallorca's final cycling frontier.

Would you visit Mallorca for gravel riding? Let us know in the comments!👇
No, I don't think I would. Even if I had the money for it, my bike would break into a million pieces on those roads. 🤔😐
Next thing you know there will be amazing mountain-biking there and I’ll just have to take 3 bikes if I ever get a chance to go
For sure. Looks lovely. Food looks scrumptious too. 😃👍
I definitely would, I was there last week for my 40th and did the cap de formentor road ride. Absolutely amazing so I can only imagine given the terrain I went thru how fun the gravel biking would be
Yes, added to the list ✍🏻
I love that Manon is not too proud to get off and push when safety dictates. She is awesome as usual.
Ain't no stopping her! 💪
Me too!
Absolutely love this content! Love the enthusiasm and spirit of adventure that is classic Manon! Great to do a wonderful collaboration with Bernat and Jan! So often, on gravel rides ,I love to forage and wildcraft food. This video shows us that it is the experience, not the finish line, that is the goal. Stopping to take in views, say hello to animals, grab local delicacies, and yes, get off and pushwhen the terrain humbles us, is what it is all about. Thanks to gcn, Manon ,Bernat, and Jan, Mallorca is definitely on my bucket list!
Will you be riding the gravel or roads? 👀
@@gcn Gravel! For sure!
Love that you busted the idea that just being from an area of the world makes you an expert, and including the regional GCN teams for inclusivity and exposure is always a classy move, I always appreciate that!
Glad you liked us mixing the teams up! 🙌
Looks good for a mountain bike as well.
Yeah it's great for Mountain bikes 🙌
I like how this video is almost just a vlog, makes it more personal
Thanks for watching 🙌
Tip from a local to anybody coming to Mallorca to ride - stay anywhere other than the cycling hotspot of Pollensa/Alcudia. Too many cyclists in that area. But the rest of the island is truly a cycling paradise.
Jan Eric still looks fit enough to ride pro. Dude certainly hasn't gone to fat!
Another great adventure GCN. Thanks!
I love this video❤️Thank you for great content.
So much of what makes these types of videos great is the terrain, the landscape. Watching it on a TV with CZcams, that needs 4K to be truly epic. When will GCn start filming in 4k?
As a mallorcan citizen, I couldn't live here without my MTB 😌
Maybe we'll send the GMBN team over 🤔
13:48 loving the yellow lines in that tight alley. they help me find my path at 100km/h and know my boundaries 😌👌
Well done Mannon! Gravel with a grin!🚴♂️😁
Who can't gavel with a grin 🙌
Just did a 125km gravel ride in Mallorca today! It’s a beautiful place, and a real joy to be on quiet tracks away from the cars and road cycle mobs!
Nice riding! 🙌
@Jesskha Hi, sounds good! I think it’s about finding what works for you and challenging yourself while enjoying it too. It’s easy to compare to others (especially with so many awesome CZcams vids!) and think you’re not doing enough. I have cycles on and off for 20 years depending on work and family and where I lived, but wouldn’t call my self a cyclist, I just like to cycle. Used to mountain bike because I never liked riding on roads. But they are a bit slow. Now a gravel bike is the perfect fit. I ride to work each day and do a mid week ride of about 30k then a day out ride on a Sunday when I can 👍
What was your route @msealyon?
Fantastic!! I know Mallorca soooo well and have never ridden. Aways been there for business. It always makes me smile when a Brit (yn y fideo hwn, merch o Gymru) is so surprised with "food off a tree". That is Spain and the Mediterranean way.
Another beautiful gravel area is Axarquía, close to Málaga, Spain. Looks like Majorca landscape (we're still in Spain) but the weather is just fantastic. Give a try!
Sometimes for very rough gravel, you are better off with a mountain bike or flat handle bars for more stability. I have noticed that they looked to be struggling with stability with drop bars.
Do you ride MTB or gravel? 👀 It's all down the individual.
@@gcn I ride MTB….soon I’ll be getting a gravel bike, so I guess I will see how stable the dropbars are on rough gravel ✌️
That gravel looks wicked fun but I would definitely want some 45+ width tires to keep it compliant on some of the chunkier sections! Some of those almost single track sections look like a blast
ooo nice some fat tyres would make a super fun build. Our gravel build is great for those mixed surface rides 🙌
We need more of this!
Will you be making the trip out to ride the Mallorca gravel? 🤔
I have miles and miles of gravel here in northern Indiana. Yes it’s smooth, but pretty flat. I’d love to have a technical ride like this.
I've started ridding some gravel... definately have to get off a push on the technical bits, so good to see its not just me 👍
Hike a bike is not a crime! 🙌
Nice to see another side of Mallorca. Not sure i get the obsession with "hike a Bike gravel" but the later part of the ride looked nice.
Cause going downhill on those hike a bike sections is always wicked fun
Hahah it's an acquired taste. Does mean you can get to some really amazing spots 🙌
There are gravel tracks all over Spain. Just follow the railway lines. On both sides there are gravel tracks.
Great video Manon and The GCN team. I actually saw you guys when you were out on your ride. I did shout Hi 👋 as I passed you at junction near Sant Joan👍☺️
Ah thanks Clive! Sorry we missed you 👀
Gravel in Mallorca looks amazing 😻
It rides even better 🙌
What a beautiful place to ride both road and gravel! GCN is gonna make me go broke with all the places you go that I want to ride!
What's your top riding destinations ? 👀
Wonder if the Mallorca bike rent shops will be stocking them along with the Road & Mountain bikes . Might be some more maintenance involved for them I guess .. Yeah can be Rocky on those Islands . Toss up between a MTB and Gravel.. Whatever rocks your boat I guess..
Great video, beautiful views, gravel not for me but such a lovely chance to see another part of the world I've never been, thanks GCN for the fun and the sight seeing
Ever thing about giving gravel a go? 👀
@@gcn No, looking at those tracks and rocks, I fall off at the slightest rut :) at 59 I'm over falling off to be honest xx
On my very short bucket list...for cycling and for food.
Now then, wouldn’t a mountain bike be altogether more comfortable and practical on these roads? (Asking for a friend 😅)
Perhaps, but the gravel bike adds a certain fun 🙌
Gave it a big thumps up, as requested😁
soooo many private properties spoil the fun a bit…. but I managed to find very cool gravel routes with Komoot this year. Also the via Verd is a great option. Almost impossible to rent a gravel in Mallorca so suggest to bring your own (I did)
Komoot is a great tool for finding routes 🙌
Do you have any links to the Komoot page?
So excited for another cool looking video
That route would be perfect for a hardtail mountain bike.
Perhaps.. where's the fun in that though 🤣
Just Superb Guys n Gals..
Cycling makes life worth living & supporters like me are always pushing pedals from home next to you guys, never forget what a great job are you doing, let's save the planet together, this heavenly paradise on earth deserves our efforts and skills by now, living in perfect harmony with the Holy Creation
Cycling trips aren't very eco friendly.
Seems like a lot of that would have been easier and more fun on a MTB. 🙈
Absolutely. ‘Gravel’ seems to be primarily a marketing tool to sell people another bike. On a trail like that a MTB is the obvious choice. You can’t tell from a map what the surface is going to be like. Much better to be on a bike truly designed to deal with the conditions.
Giod video, think you might need a moutain bike though. T bgg ose look more like bolders than gravel.
Great vid and kudos to the hotels, b&bs and VRBOs that are cycling friendly. Stayed at one last year. They did your laundry in cold water and brought your damp clothes to our rooms which all had drying racks. You could tell it was run by actual cyclists.
Sounds like a great trip 👀
In the late 1990s - early 2000s this was just called mountain biking…
Yes on light trails ;)
That course was more suitable for a mountain bike, in my opinion!
#mallorcaisforyou #mallorcaissport 😍😍
Hey, thank you for visiting my island and wellcome!
You've got some great riding on the doorstep! 🙌
12:51 What a Cafe stop!
Great spot 👌
What is the B&B where you stayed so we could look into staying there.
Great!
I would go with a hard tail not a gravel
Bike for sure. Would love to cicle there
Lots of great riding for all bikes in Mallorca!
How is Manon everywhere at once?! Colorado, england, and Mallorca all at the same time.
She's a busy lady 🏃♂
Have fun pushing pedals riders, fans are always here by your side guys, cycling makes life worth living, it looks this spectacular and adorable oh yezzzzzz l love it, supporters like me are always here to backup you guys, more bicycles for everybody plizzzzzz, more competitions and more cycling partnerships world wide, having reasons to discover such natural beauties all the time, yeah, looks like heaven on earth indeed
Glad you enjoyed the vid ! 🙌
Such a beautiful place to ride
It's amazing 👀
Mountains are home of cyclist. Thx CGN.
They really are 🙌
Pretty challenging gravel! More like MTB tracks. Liked the video but would have seen more focus on the gravel parts rather than the hike-a-bike stuff!
The gravel mtb lines are blurring 😬
This looks a lot like gravel in southern California. Variety, scenery, we do however have a lot more trail users around. Generally everyone is very nice though. I kind of resent Manon calling her Midwest/great plains experience "American gravel". That's like calling Mallorca gravel "European gravel", while true, there's more to it ;D
Interesting point! What's you favourite gravel to ride on?
@@gcn I tend towards single track, more technical stuff than most gravel I see folks riding. Recently did the quick n dirty filthy 50 race which had _some_ technical riding as its primarily a mtb race. We like to call this "under biking", and it's honestly awesome!
The fresh figs would be the best part of the ride.
Food is the best part of most rides no?
Yes that seem be nice place do ride at!
So what time of year was this filmed? That would be helpful….
Is there a link to the route in Komoot?
GCN should come to Australia specifically WA and do the 1000km Munda biddi with gravel bikes or try the wadandi track
Sounds great!
hmm, looks and sounds like Old School Mountain Biking
Would love to try some Mallorcan "Delicksy".... 12:53 Not sure what language she speaks lol
When are we gonna get GGN(Global Gravel Network)? And can I be a presenter when it happens?
More like "We need to talk how there is a Zwift add every 3 minutes"
Is it cycling heresy to wonder aloud, whether gravel bikes will meet mountain bikes halfway at some stage and incorporate lightweight front fork suspension? The jarring would be a bit much for my sports-damaged wrists.
Gravel bikes are now coming with short travel suspension forks, check this one out 👉 czcams.com/video/iW0DKcT5pB4/video.html
1:01 "You're Spanish" "I'm from Barcelona" that answer should've ended there ;)
no matter what anyone says, but the gravel road is more suitable for the track than for the crossing
😍😍😍❤️
Looked great but I’ll stick to the roads when in Mallorca. Gravel is too wild for me😂.
Some great roads too! 🙌
Alright, I'll have 2 stones & a packet of gravel
That's the type of gravel that the gravel world champs should have been on, not that silly bike paths race :-)
PREACH
Bah!!! Gravel, I don't know why I even watched. Twice.
Not a gravel fan Raff? 😔
@@gcn No, I just don't understand the position on the bike. It's too head forward and all the tech is leaning to the Mountain bike.
I did watch it twice tough.
I think the ride is more for a Mountainbike.
Most of those trails look like hardtail MTB territory. Not fun with drop bars and 40mm tires (in my admittedly off-road low skill opinion).
Puntersfest
Never really understood the logic behind gravelbikes...like modifying a sportscar for going off-road...Why not just switch to a xc mountainbike with a more aero geometry? The so-called technical section would be a non-issue
XC tires aren't wide enough. A gravel bike is basically XC with wider tires, more progressive geometry, and lower gear ratio, all ideal for travel over chunkier stuff like this and going up hills without necessarily having to carry your bike. Riding both is actually super, super different.
@@alexandersnider734 100mm XC 29er (essentially a flat bar gravel bike as it should be with suspension forks) will have much lower gearing than a lot of the so-called gravel bikes! They're just road bikes with slightly bigger tyres with a 40T chainring and 42/46 cog, utterly crap for anything steep.....narrow bars on bouldery descents, hideous.... it's the worst possible thing I could think of for off road. Or on road.
@@alexandersnider734 You forget a XC mtb has front suspension. This alone will make it handle better than a gravelbike. The only place a gravelbike would shine is over asphalt, obviously. Anything with dirt and you'll get more grip from a mtb guaranteed. It's just physics.
Are we seeing ‘gravel’ riding actually spill over into ‘mountain’ bike riding?
The lines are blurring 😳
Man that was a lot of food
at one time if you still have some riding to do.....
Maybe take a nap after eating all that. Then finish riding. Anywho good stuff. keepemcoming if ya can.
We love a good picnic ride 🤣
Animal innards 🤤 yum yum
if it's good for the farmers....
A Spaniard, a German and a Brit walk into a bar…
Ouch!
Nice video. Btw awkward situation - first you see the pigs and see how sweet they are....then you eat them as if that was the most normal thing in the world....(try vegan...it can change you.....)
Have you tried out Vegan cook book? 👉 gcn.eu/6ej
@@gcn not yet, I will do so. thanks
Isn’t gravel just trying to get road cyclists into XC mountain biking??
Shhh it's a secret!
"There is no traffic"?? Are you joking? Locals are more than one million.
8,6 BILLION car movements happen yearly here.
And we are more than fed up by jams created by cyclists in our busy roads.
Someone needs to spend some time with their GMBN counterparts.
Should we get them to teach us gravel? 🤣
a trekking bike would be easier to use...!!??
I'm from Barthelona ! Mallorca is an iceland !
😂😂😂😂😂😂
This video is great it's saved me a whack of money now I realise my "noughties" 26er Carrera Vulcan XC with 100mm Recon forks is far more suitable for the trip they did....Gravel- The Emperors New Clothes....And if I ever replace the Vulcan it'll be with another XC bike....."gravel" is an abomination for a generation who never had the misery of steel rigid MTB with crap gearing....
Great to hear you've got a bike that works for you 🙌 Keeping an old bike going is always good too! Have you ever tried a gravel bike? they really are great fast, fun and great for lots of conditions 😊
The real gravel paradise is Sardinia! Like Mallorca multiplied by ten
Oh, fig...
This video had Vegan cyclists vibe to it.
This looked more like Mountain Biking to me. Could it be that Gravel Biking was just invented so that road cyclist did not have to dress up like Skate Boarders or Surfer Dudes?
I don’t blame you for not eating the organs, Manon! 🤢
Some are very high in nutrients (still working on trying myself lol)
California, USA is a far better cycling destination.
Bit harder for us brits to get too ... We've love to visit though! What's your best local route?
Cool video, but Mallorca is MTB territory. Not worth bringing your gravel bike. Will only cause frustration.
Glad you liked the video! We enjoyed riding our gravel bike there 👀
Why MTBs exist!! 🤦♂️
First
As a mountain biker. It always makes me laugh when I hear a roadie describe a rough technical route. Then watch them bottle it on and walk down a slight slope. that I wouldn't even slow down on. Riding the same route on my road bike. With 23mm tyres.
First like a and comment
Wow!
Don't think so
