Hey friends, it's been a while. The world has been a little weird, but I hope this brings you some form of joy. Apologies for the camera noise, and the less than ideal audio - again, it's been a while.
P.S. you'll usually find the curry cubes at your fave Asian grocery store, or the international section at your local.

It's amazing how even your videos on simple topics like this have some much editing and polished production. Some of your peers would just be pointing a camera at the ground in a 20 minute long cut, and you've got home movies, other hikers, structure, etc. Really great stuff!
First video of hers I've seen but I agree with ya! Good production quality is much needed in our lovely thrutuber community, really helps tell the stories
She has has such a great voice. Soothing and honest... I wish my iphone, and Alexa used this voice
Right , her videos are great! 🙂
Someone should contact Apple with a sample of her voice. They would have no choice but to make Elina the new Alexa!!!
This is so funny to me, because I usually love NZ accents and I really couldn't stand her voice. Just caught this comment as I was clicking away from the video, unable to sit through it!
I would constantly be talking to Alexa if her voice was Alexa's voice!!
Welcome back Elina! So excited to see a new video from you. We absolutely loved your PCT story and it is a huge inspiration to my wife and I. Keep up the awesome adventures!
You’re a fabulous story teller and Videoographer! I loved watching all of your PCT videos!
Just watch your movie and love it!!! Love the final message at the end. It is all about the people!!!! Cheers and you have gained a fan now!!!! So inspiring!!!!
Clicked the first time for the hiking information, stayed for the entire series because of the story telling. Your voice , both literal and figurative are compelling and captivating . Subscribed and looking forward to more content.
oh my goodness I was introduced to Japanese curry by a friend last year and I can't wait to go buy some more! Thank you for reminding me how amazing it is. Missed your videos, glad to see you again!!
This is great. I found your channel when looking at PCT films, and was really impressed by the effort and love you put into your films... it isn't hard to imagine all the eposodes wedged back-to-back and being shown as a documentary in cinemas. I wondered if that would be it as far as films from you go after watching the last chapter today, but no, you're back with more. Please keep walking (when we all can again safely), and pleae keep sharing.
There's a lot more trails in the states Elina!!! Come do a couple more soon!!!
yoooooo Elina! I was sooo happy to see you back! your PCT trail series really inspired me to start making my own adventure videos! love your style, thanks for everything :)
The most unique channel ivr come across in a while. So quietly compelling and excellent videography 🌟🌹
I love how you edited this !!!! The whole thing of when you tasted it , it reminded you of your childhood ..... as expressed by a jumble of
shots from when you were young ...... so great !!!! what a sweet child you were ..... :D
Was so pumped to see a new video from ya! Thank you:)
We need more of these. Love the vids. Thanks so much!
I really enjoyed your whole series on the PCT, I hope you do in fact "Make this a regular thing". Thanks for the great videos so far!
Definitely trying this (or something close to it) next month when I walk the West Highland Way here in Scotland. Loved your PCT mini series!
I love your editing style! Also Japanese curry - YUM.
Definitely make this a regular thing! Loving your vids 🙌🏼
I laughed at the text comments on the recipe steps, and I love how you show that eating this curry throws you back to your childhood, this is so beautiful. Thank you for this moment :)
I was just putting together some meals for a trip to the Appalachian trail next weekend. Perfect timing on this video :) Thank you!
literally everything you make is art
ELINA! We have missed you!
Thanks for sharing!!
Ruby face was priceless. Your moms food looks wonderful. Enjoy that while you can. I miss my moms food. I think the Sierras terrified every thru-hiker.
That looks way better than what I had for dinner tonight! Great job and love your editing style.
You managed to make a backpacking recipe into a beautiful video. Lovely. Gonna try this when I go out this weekend for a one nighter!
This makes me happy. Please don’t stop making more videos!!! Amazing!
omg ive never thought of bringing curry cubes on trail, it's my fav comfort food at home so i have to try this :)
I've missed your videos!! What a fun little release from the real world. Keep safe
To be honest, thank you so much for sharing your thought full ideas, what to eat on the trails? Much appreciated 🙏🏼
Had this for dinner on my first solo hike and boy did it make it memorable. This was delicious, thanks for the idea Elina!
your videos are the only adventure videos i watch on normal speed. usually i speed up all the videos, but yours are so captivating that i have to watch them at normal speed.
Such good story telling, don't ever stop.
True to form Elina. Where one might've been tempted to skip a failed attempt, you are so honest and up front with everything you create. Excited to see you back. Btw, love the colorful mask. I bet you made it 😎
Yay thanks for making this one! I love making Kare at home. Might actually try this on trail!
i watch all of your videos in one sitting. they made me cry. you made me laugh. thank you for that. il was so well done.
About to go backpacking in the sierras in a couple weeks with my buddies and needed food suggestions. Thanks for sharing!
Nice to see you again Elina,, you're looking great !! Memories are what keeps us moving ahead ,, the curry meal looked quite good ,, actually both of them ,, but I know nothing about what good curry should taste like.....I will have to watch again and take notes on the recipe..
...hope to se you again as you continue your adventures ....
..... Stay Safe and God Bless.....
The hiker montage of them describing on trail recipes made me laugh 😆
Yes please, on making this a regular thing. Much luv and respect
I was always jealous of that meal tiptap!
Voice matters. Your calm voice is so nice to hear
Thanks for sharing your journey. All the love from the rockies 🇨🇦
loved the video and the idea! so simple, thank you for that.
Really loved this video. I’d also like to know more about finding meat alternatives on the PCT
I have said it before I will say it again, you are a great storyteller, you took the otherwise mundane subject and made it very interesting. Well done.
Thank you! I will be making this on the Appalachian Trail this year. It looks yummy!
Thanks. I'll have to look for the ingredients. Good to see you on YT again.
I just tried this recipe and it was DELICIOUS! So easy, too. Israeli couscous, fresh green onion and baby bok choy, freeze dried ground beef and a cube of hot Japanese curry. Plenty of room in a 700ml pot and took about 10 minutes total to prep/cook/eat. Thank you!
Hey Elina we have something in common - curry! My dad Terry was SAS (special forces) for 22 years and they would curry anything. It seems to go down well in the jungles as well as on the trail and the table at home. Great video. Mark
love it. if I get a chance to listen to some music when on my hiking trips I always choose music like Delta Parole or Guns N Roses, the rawness is the best with nature.
What a pleasure seeing a video of yours again-you have been missed! 🍜 💗🌿
Please do make it a regular thing! Re-watched all your videos when getting back to the UK after a trip to Europe, had to quarantine for 2 weeks : o . I've shared your It's The People film with so many people and it has really inspired me to get out after being stuck inside.
Take it easy and stay safe over there :)
Omg. You’re so adorbs. Lol
Can’t wait to try this out. Thanks so much for posting this. It will be a nice change from the norm. ✌️
I‘m literally crying right now that you made this video. Why am I so weird. That’s not normal. Your Videos are just so good! Drammatiic music for curry making. YESSS
Loved this video, geat recipe, loved the comedic flair and nostalgic feels A+
Best comfort food ever. My kids are grown, but I still have boxes of the curry around because I just like it. I'm overdue to try it on the trail. Thanks!
Oh this is one of those creepily well-timed video recommendations from youtube. I just recently bought more curry blocks with the hope of being able to make it on my camp stove.
I use stock cubes in almost every meal, never even thought about curry! Thanks for the awesome recipe 🤓
I was just thinking about this this morning, awesome vid! Japanese curry is life
How did you manage to make a recipe/cooking video so hilarious and touching at the same time? To weave in your childhood was pure magic I wish I had been a better mother--no one will have memories of my cooking :(
I loved this. Laughed so hard during the first couscous pour subtitles and your family trying to convince your brother his life was the Truman Show.
Dang Elina how did you make a stupid curry video into something so hilarious and magical? This was great, the curry looks great, you’re great. Please make us more videos whenever you can.
Episode one of elinas trail cooking show 😃 seriously tho this has been super handy. I’m a vegan planning a thru hike and I have no idea what’s available in the states as I’m from the U.K....... had no idea curry cubes were a thing lol I’d love to see more of these 👌
You can definitely get the brand of curry cubes that she uses in waitrose (although not sure if they are exactly the same) and im sure you could probably get them in an asian supermarket too :)
Waitrose is abit posh for me haha but I’ll have a look next time I’m near a store cheers. Bearing in mind I’m on the Isle of Wight so we’re about 20years behind the times haha
J G cheers that’s really helpful ☺️👍
Yeah Australian and New Zealand supermarkets mostly all have it
I love this girl! She’s so fun and happy 😊 idk why but I’ve also watched her thru hike three times and (besides from the great filmmaking) it’s VERY inspireing, now I think I’m gonna joke the pct ASAP (which is pretty far out cause I’m still in middle school)
Definitely going to give this a try next week! I desperately need some new trail meals
So glad to see you again I miss your videos
Just wanted to say, I saw this and was overjoyed at something I could try easily. Also ramen and I don’t agree with each other lol. I thought I had gotten everything, but somehow, no spinach. I did however have a “Woolworths Asian style salad” so what the hell add that. Tasted, awesome. Then add the crunchy noodles, even better. Finally, the soy sauce packet was just sitting there looking lonely. So let’s try adding that too.
To be honest it was great with just the couscous and deceptive cube. With everything else. I’m cooking this more often at home. So from the bottom of my Aussie heart, thank you soooo much, this was awesome. I don’t know how it is “supposed” to taste, but what I got was amazing. Thank you for sharing this.
Now... Back to the Curry 🍛😁 Thanks for sharing. I was waiting for this one 👍🙏
My dad sent me this video out of nowhere after I sent him your PCT series. I think he likes your videos, too. We do a backpacking trip every year together and I'm excited that we have a new place to look for trail inspiration-your videos!
Genius! I currently live in Japan and LIVE for Japanese curry. This will be a must have when I hike the PCT, thanks!
Love it! Could you do more of these, and maybe include some cold soaking recipes? The edit of you adding too much couscous had me rolling lol
Call me crazy, but cold soak food is like a movie with no audio....
Good to see you again and hope you are doing well and kudos on thru hike, boy that cat was big for ball ,like how u switch ur hair from each side an still looks good, cool alright be well n safe
Well done. A cupped hand is a great measuring tool (grins) Almost as good as a one, two, or three finger pinch. I can’t do cous-cous but pre-cooked rice is great substitute. I like drying my own veggies to add but package spinach can be found almost everywhere.
Your videos are just beautiful. its wonderful to see you again on this platform. you made beauty out of a backpacking meal for gods sake. I so look forward to your future work. Thank you. I was in those beautiful Sierras just 2 days ago. It was magical. And oddly dry. I have a bone to pick with you young folks on these long hikes though. Flat out, unless you are in Elina's age group, trail runners are NOT the answer. They were light as hell and pretty darn comfortable (Lone Peaks) but they are NOT for the Sierras. I found myself longing to be like you guys and girls trudging through cool snow. I imagine only sun cups could compare to the jagged 45 degree angled pointy narrow granite edges of murder rocks that my tired old legs endured that were covered with shaved snow when you visited.
BTW do you still need smart water bottles? Cheers
Elina....when you woke up looking right into yur cam...smiled and said "I dont know what happened...I woke up this way" was so cute and funny....so good to see you again....stay safe...!!!
Let's! Just subscribed -- loving your editing journey :)
To be fair, Elina, that one Sierras river crossing you show in this clip had me create diamonds between my buttcheeks, and I am a whitewater kayaker. I woke up afraid after watching that for the first time, and I mean in a comfy bed in Switzerland. That was some suicide-level river crossing right there, with no rope and presumably no downstream safety in sight...! Hip-deep meltwater streams are bad juju without a kayak. But I'm glad you made it, and massive kudos for the quality of your videos. I have recently taken to rewatching your entire through-hike. It's great storytelling. (And thanks for the Skillshare trial!)
Hi Philipp. I'm from Switzerland as well - I take pictures of stuff. If you wanna get some pictures from a upcoming kajaking adventure » DM (ig: @manuellopezphoto)
I still remember one video where it sounded like a really hard day in the Sierras. She said she'd talk about it later, but it never came up in the rest of the trail videos. I was assuming a bad river crossing or a freaky pass near mishap
aaalllen I have wondered about that hard or unpleasant day, too!
@@aaalllen yeah, when will she ever address that day???
yeah, I bailed out of the sierras in the same year for that exact reason. fell into a stream but thankfully I was with an expert kayaker who knew how to rig up a rope pendulum and my buddy was able to grab my hand and pull me out. really shook me up though.
I've enjoyed your videos. Your PCT experience was so awesome. Please stay safe...
I gotta say, some of those trail food descriptions sounded pretty good!
Wow the timing of the cat in the back round when she was announcing her sponsor was too good
I’ve just binge watched your PCT vids and feel kinda embarrassed I didn’t clock you’re veg! Great video and such a top meal idea. Thanks for the tips from a hungry Ozzie vegan hiker.
Hey, I am a Radix Nutrition user too!!! Love their products and use them in all my adventures!! Also I am in Hamilton!!
Glad to come across your channel! You make amazing vidoes.
Yumm! Thanks for this idea Elina! 🙂
This meal + Isle Royale National Park + last weekend = Perfect dinner. 100% will be on the menu for 2021 PCT.
There is so much to love about this video.
Yes please! The meal AND making this a regular thing.🌻
God Bless you for your transparency.
Loved the video and recipe. I'll try it out at home. Also snagged one of the Skillshare w/ 2 months free subscriptions. Wife is Japanese and we lived in Japan for 7 years with our daughter. Keep up the great work and 頑張って!
Fair play, your standards are way higher than mine. When I did some of the great trails of NZ (i think the longest was 6 days, with snow holdups) I just had pasta in sauce sachets cooked with water, and an 8-pack of precook sausages chopped into them. This looks way better, but needing a bit more care over the ingredients!
You just became my favorite hiking youtuber!
You have the best childhood home videos!
Great video. I’m half Japanese/American - and can totally relate. Couscous is denser but if you want to be more authentic, minute rice tastes better IMHO and uses less fuel. I also add a bouillon, freeze dried chicken and dehydrated carrots/potatoes. Green onions is definitely a key ingredient! Thanks for the video and journey down memory lane.
Likely the best hiking food video ever and am not a curry fan. Why do I like this? Because it is so personal and it has as you say an original "voice." All good writers find their voice and then alter it as needed. Nice. Keep it up.
Any other thru hikes planned?! Your videography is just absolutely amazing with the PCT and everything in general.
Nice. Fell in love with curry in Japan, and even became super friendly with this curry shop owner in Osaka. Have you seen the curry pouches that are already in liquid form with veggies, and just need to be heated up? I feel like those would be super easy! I bought one at a Japanese Supermarket here in NYC and it tasted fantastic for being prepared already. I think Golden might make one.
Also dried mushroom (soaked for 30mins before use) would be great in this
Yes! You can buy it in cubes. Easy to carry
Thanks, Elina
I am halfway through Roxane Gay's course. She is a great teacher. I tried Skillshare before and the courses I tried were not of Roxane's quality. I take a lot of courses online. Some of these organizations might want to sponsor your channel. Coursera has some good courses. Edx courses are college level. Futurelearn is good. If you like writing classes, one of the best ones is IPW (International Writer's Program) by the Iowa Writer's Workshop. They have a great community of writers. There are lots of writer workshops on line like The Gotham Writer's Workshop, Writer Digest, AWC (Australian Writers' Center), but the one that I like is Grubstreet.
I enjoyed your documentary of your through-hike of the Pacific Crest Trail. I liked how you showed the connection that hikers have with each other. I hope to see more of your videos. What great writing in this video, "those salty tears of unjustness." Just wonderful.
David Larkin
I honestly hate couscous, and especially Israeli couscous (after a sad situation when I was pregnant and it made me sick) but I really can’t wait to try this recipe! It looks so good🤤🤤
Also yay for more videos from you! I can’t wait to see another💜
This was wonderful. 👍 Your storytelling skills are exceptional. ‘Skill share’ would be wonderful to try out, but with it being summertime, and the need to do fire mitigation on my land here in Colorado, that is taking all my daylight hours. 🥱. Seeing more food videos is always a good thing. 😋.
