    I have grown dahlias for years and I use upsidedown tomato cages for support. You cut off the legs of the cage and bend them in half making a hook. Place the large top of the cage on the soil surface then push the wire hooks into the soil to keep them in place. It works great and keeps the plant growing upright.

    Zone 6B here, I pre sprout my dahlias inside in April or plant the tubers outside the
    First week of June. I prefer the soil temperature to be warm enough to get started (mid 60s). cold and wet for me can cause rotting; especially since they need deep watering.

  • @shandysgarden
    @shandysgarden Před rokem +1

    Yes! Please have a video on irrigation for beginners. There's so many options out there you never know what to start with. I personally need it broken down by best methods for different sizes of yard. I've got about 1/8 of an acre backyard. And I'm experimenting with all the different growing methods. I love hand-watering but I do have two raised beds where I would like to try my hand at drip tubing or drip tape or soaker hose. And fortunately I have to have a hose right there next to those beds because those were my first beds. The further away I am from my water source the different my watering method May be, etc.
    I usually use regular city water but it doesn't have any chlorine in it as far as on the test strips you can buy for testing pool water anyway, but I also have buckets of rain water around the garden that I use currently. I put kitchen scraps in those buckets so as those plants break down I'm taking the nutrients from those plants to fertilize. I also have rabbit poo from my indoor pet bunny. So I just do so many things with my water that I don't know what kind of automated watering system would even fit into my original but I want to try something!
    My waiting room is my classroom right now😊
    And by the way I hope to see you at this year's HOA conference in Virginia in October! This is the first time I've had the chance to go and I hope to be lugging everybody's books around so they can be signed😂

    Dahlias are a favorite of mine. I can just get lost looking into one. They seem to exude their own light. And, I have found (at least for me, I know this runs against what everyone says) that when I take good care of them and they are situated in an open space not next to or under anything, that they make stems so thick they don't require staking. I am talking stems as big around as a walking stick or a jam jar for the tall varieties. It's wild. The only thing that can bring them down at that point (not including a physical menace like a dog or an axe) is a storm with high winds.

I recently planted potatoes and a Better Boy tomato plant and a sweet bell pepper and it took some time to find areas where there was enough hours of sun for those. Georgia has been having monsoon type rain with several days dry in-between, but sun is the problem in my yard. I wish I could grow more flowers. • @michellejames5953
      @michellejames5953 Před rokem

      When they’re a foot tall, snip out 3-4 inches to just above a set of leaves. It will make your plant full and bushier, meaning more stems with flowers. Do not water them until there’s growth showing above ground, they have water inside the tuber and moisture in the soil until then. Watering them before the above ground growth can cause rotting.

      It’s important to get Dahlias started in warm soil. I’ve been starting them for years by planting them inside in pots first with good potting mix. I plant them outside when night time lows will stay above 40 degrees, 10 degrees celsius and stems are at least 6” high. In Chicago, that’s mid to late May. If some nights get too cold, they get covered in plastic. We have clay soil here, so soil needs to be tilled before planting. Slow release fertilizer helps. A sunny spot is great. Stems need to be held up. Good luck!
