  • I’ll be covering the pro’s and con’s of getting a second bird, what to expect, if a second bird is the right choice, and recovering how to properly introduce a new bird to your current bird. Please think carefully about the extra time and effort needed when getting a new bird. Its not just leaving them in the same room and they get along. There is a lot more that goes into it. Like a quarantine period, vet check up, bonding with you, bonding with your bird. Keep in mind birds work in flock mindset. You and your current bird are a flock (like a family) and a new bird will be seen as an intruder, you need to bond with them first and show your bird they are another flock member and your bird needs to get to know them to accept them as well and this take TIME

      It's not a big deal at all because that wasn't why we got him. He is super sweet and has bonded amazingly really fast But yeah if there's something we can do differently for him to encourage it, we can try for sure! Thanks so much!! 💙💙

      @@neeli8423kiwi talks a bit, Luca our other quaker talks A LOT. For kiwi he naturally picked up on words we say, never tried to teach him. For Luca it was a case of repetition. So everyday saying the same words, lines, or singing the same songs. Some quakers will learn to talk better than others. 5 months is still way too young, at 5 months they can start picking up some sounds at most ☺️

    Thank you so much your videos are so good and educating . I will rethink my wish to have a second bird . Thank you for your warning , I sense that my Bird thinks he is king 👑 , and maybe he doesn’t want to except a friend . Considering he tries to attact and scare my dog away (when there is me because he knows I will protect him at all cost) I will never re home a new bird or any pets actually , but I’m not experienced and will end up confused . And maybe my way out is to give the new bird a separate room , and divide my time for them etc . Which won’t be good because my purpose is to give my first bird a friend. Maybe I need more time to learn about birds behavior before I get a new bird so I can work with them like you do . And make the introduction successful.

    I’m getting a bird! Done heaps of research and equipment and a big Avery for them but now I’m just down to the deciding factor of do I get 2 baby cockatiels (they’re both 6-8 week) at the same time or start of with one bird, tame and bond with it, then get another? I just don’t want to the bird to be alone but obviously don’t want it to bond with the other bird and not think of me as a companion. Please help and any advice/tips is appreciated 🙏🏽

      Id be careful in general getting a bird who isnt a cockatiel to be with a cockatiel, cockatiels are passive and gentle and even if the other bird is gentle such as a conure there is still potential of a fight and hurting the tiel

      Im so sorry to hear that 🥺 id recommend two things. You definitely still wanna work on bonding, itll take time and patience but itll be necessary. You want to be able to interact with them and not have to resort to keeping them in a cage. Getting another friend is dependant on how much work you can handle. As youd have to rehabilitate and bond with two birds now. You also dont know how well your rescue will take to another that isnt their partner, but it sounds like a good idea either way as long as you are okay with the workload :)

      Cockatiels can do well coexisting with budgies as long as they are introduced properly. They would have to be caged separately though. With cockatiels I recommend another cockatiel as they work best with their own species since they tend to be timid and passive birds.

      100% it matters. Cockatoos are large parrots, would not pair it with anything that isnt a size equivalent. Ive seen cockatoos make friends with macaws, amazons, other cockatoos, eclectus, etc. If you get the same species then id get a female to avoid breeding. Otherwise it shouldnt matter :)

    I need some advice, I have a cockatiel who is about 7 but only had her two year's, shes ok in her self but looks sad/depressed sometimes. And I was thinking if to get her a friend (another cockatiel) they wouldn't be in the same cage or out together (partly because my cockatiel can't fly she has damaged wings from where she was before) I just thought a friend for her would help her not be sad. They would be close together but not out together. But what would be better a female or a male, thanks

    • @mimisbirdhouse
      @mimisbirdhouse  Před 2 lety

      So a few things. 1) are you spending a lot of time with your cockatiel? Are they out of they cage enough? Have enough toys?
      2) if you did get a second cockatiel and once you go through quarantine stage and slow introduction you could 100% keep them out together. In fact, physical interaction will help a lot for your tiel. Even if they cant fly they will still recieve preening and company. Cockatiels are the most well tempered parrots so chances of them getting along are pretty high. Of course they would be out with your supervision until you know they are very well bonded but theres no reason to keep them separated forever.

      Hi 👋🏼 with cockatiels id strongly only recommend other cockatiels. Cockatiels are the exception parrot because they have super passive kind natures compared to other parrots so they dont do well with other species. Even budgies have been known to bully or hurt them. Im not saying its impossible or never been done but there is a risk involved

      @@Ragon121 you can have them out together under supervision, not in the same cage. Its more if the cockatiel acts all tough and the pionus gets mad then the pionus can react what it thinks is an annoyed response but the beak is stronger and can hurt them, or if the pionus gets territorial or threatened and responds then same thing
