- Having distortion or bad sound quality in Windows 10 with Bluetooth headphones or other devices? Try this easy fix.
DISCLAIMER: THIS FIX APPLIES ONLY TO PLAYBACK DEVICES (SPEAKERS, HEADPHONES, ETC . .) THIS WILL NOT CLEAR UP PROBLEMS WITH USING BLUETOOTH MICROPHONES
If you are using a Bluetooth headset and need your mic, always try to set your headphones/headset as default device, and default communication device, respectively.
Also, an easy method to try first, per user Alexandre Durin (Chrophedra)
''I suggest you to disable all enhancements in Speakers properties and check. Refer the steps below:
Press Windows key + X.
Click on Control Panel.
Double-Click on the Sound Icon and click on Speakers.
Click on Properties.
Click on Enhancements Tab.
Now click "Disable All Sound Effects"
Click OK and check if issue persists.'' - Věda a technologie
3 years since this was posted and this just solved my issue!
Glad it helped!
Dang youre still on youtube? Nice. I was going to use this method but then I realized that my computer doesnt have the devices and printers setting so I cant do it with this method. What other methods are there?
You just type in "Control Panel" at the start button, then click on "Devices and Printers" it's still there.
Dude love your show!!
wow, the infografic show!!!!!
You were the first voice I heard with my now-fixed headphones.
same here XD
Devices
Just for people who find this like I just did : keep in mind that this cuts off your microphone.
The real issue isn't that Bluetooth setting, it's that Windows creates TWO devices when you connect your headphones with microphone :
One is the HEADSET : microphone + headphone combo, which get shitty mono sound in your ears
The other one is the HEADPHONES : no mic, but full sound quality.
For whatever reason, Windows picks up the HEADSET and so you get the horrendous phone quality.
You need to go and mess in your sound devices and tell Windows to use the HEADPHONES device for the OUTPUT, and keep the HEADSET for INPUT, if you need the microphone.
If you don't care about the microphone, then sure, you can ignore all that and follow the video.
But if you want your microphone, that tutorial just disables it.
Exactly . . . Nicely stated
plz show me how :( plz
I actually want to use it as a headset for video conferencing but it sounds so distorted, rendering the other person's voice unable to understand
Thank you bro , you save my live ,
@@aashraypopli6290 That can be a problem with the microphone being low quality, the drivers being crap, or even the software itself using horrible settings for the sound. I'm in the same boat, mate. One thing to test this is to use the Windows Voice Recorder. If it sound good in there, you know the problem is with whatever voice chat you are using (Discord, Teams, etc). If the sound is crap in Voice Recorder, then clearly you need to work on figuring out why, because it's on your side. Maybe you speak to close to the microphone and need to find a way to lower the volume, maybe it's just bad quality hardware, etc.
Good luck! :)
Usually you don't often find videos like these helpful or useful at all but watch them out of desperation to fix the issue anyways. This was actually shockingly true and helpful for multiple different bluetooth headsets. Great vid thank you :)
I really appreciate this mate, my headphones sounded like a 1940s radio
No nostalgia here :-)
Lol
1. Start Menu -> Control Panel
2. Devices & Printers
3. Right click on your bluetooth device, Properties
4. Services tab
5. Uncheck "Hansfree telephony"
6. Restart
Unfortunately this also disables the use of the microphone. I wanted to be able to use my headphones as a listening device for music as well as the softphone on my machine, but it appears that you cannot do both which is just insanity

Unreal how 7 years later this is still useful, just fixed my sound problem. Thanks so much!
Yes! Thank you! 4 years later and this still helped me. Thie problem appeared after insalling Zoom, which a lot of people will have done in the past few days..
How do you do it on windows 10 , 2020 ?
I can even notice much difference hearing your voice now haha, I first thought It was my bluetooth USB Dongle that I bought. Thanks man.
It's lucky we live an age where tutorials like this exist from people who know what they are doing. I tried speaking to both the heaphone manufacturer (Sony) and laptop manufacturer (Samsung) as this was driving me crazy, neither seemed to have a clue. Great job Jackson
Funny enough, I do tech support . . .I definitely do a bit more sleuthing than the reg guys, though!
7 years later and it still works! I did have to forget and re-pair my headphones to my laptop to bring the sound back, but other than that, no complaints here. Thank you!
My search literally would not pull up "Devices and Printers" but in "Bluetooth & other Devices" it had a "related settings" menu on the right where "devices and printers" was located and I was able to do the rest of your steps. Very stupid that we have to do those extra loopholes. Thank you very much for your guidance my good sir., I would not have been able to do this without you nonetheless.
PLEASE PIN THIS COMMENT:
Right now, I have to go to the CONTROL PANEL to do this as of July 2019
Thank you! Yes, Devices and Printers no longer appears in search so you need to go to Control Panel first. You're the MVP.
Thx
But the services tab wasn’t there like in the video
Thanks, Sammy! :)
thank you been trying to fix for 1 hr
It's amazing that such a simple fix is found almost nowhere else on the internet, I spend the better part of two hours googling solutions for this problem and couldn't find one till I found your video. Such a simple thing, one little FYI though, apparently with the newer versions of Windows 10 MS no longer allows you to search for "devices & printers" from the Cortana search box, you now have to search for "Control Panel" and then drill down; Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printers. I don't know why Microsoft always insists on making simple things so ridiculously complicated.
Yes, they seem to keep trying to "dumb down" the settings when they actually are making it more difficult for many. Glad it helped, sir!
U can also easily access that page by goin Win+R and typing in 'control printers' and then enter
Your comment saved me, I couldn't find the control panel path anywhere, thank you!!! Why do MS move this shit around?
I did all the steps up until 2:41. My laptop wasn't granting me the option to set it as the default device, so I went to my Bluetooth settings and removed it. When I added it back, it actually worked! There were no more fuzzy sounds with tiny vibrating noises! Thanks for the help; couldn't have done it without ya! :)
Thanks
You are my Hero
Unfortunately I'm still having a slight problem. Everything was sounding muffled in my new Billboard headphones, I managed to fix something so CZcams videos sound better now, but I have a problem hearing voices. Also whenever I open another program, the headphones make a popping sound and then it muffles the audio, sounds kinda like it's underwater. Do you know if there might be another way to fix it?
For people seeing this page past november 2018, running Windows 10: I didn't have the Bluetooth Services tab for my headphone, but the problem was similar.
In the Sound part of the Windows 10 settings, you need to look for a link on the right. I have a Dutch Windows, so don't know the right translation in English, but it might be something like "configure sound". You end up in the small overview settings with all your devices for Playback (the other tabs being Record, Sounds and Communication [probably]). Turns out my headset was registered twice here. One time as a hands-free device and one time as a stereo headphone. Of course, the hands-free option was selected by default ... So selecting the other option and then set it as the default device fixed the sound quality issue.
I'm having a problem were the stereo version is disconnected, and won't reconnect.
@@ElijahRulz The only thing I can recommend is trying to get the device unregistered with Windows and then try connecting it again. Right mouse on the Windows icon, Device Manager. Then look for your device. In case of Bluetooth, it might need to be turned on. Before removing it, you can always try updating drivers first. You can also try to toggle disable / enable. And if it didn't help, remove it. Then connect the device again.
Can't guarantee it'll work though.
Very nice, ty
Fixed it for me man I appreciate it
Fixed it for me, after a few weeks of frustration! Thanks man!
I'll write the English settings for the people who will be looking:
search for Sound Playback Option in the search box ->
Down the page, under "other sound options", click "app volume and device preferences" . Then choose the right device (probably the stereo one if you came here) under Output.
thanks ..you are a lifesaver

Almost 6 years later and Windows still has this problem on Windows 11! Thank you so much for your help, only helpful tutorial I could find.
Do you know why some may not have the service tab in properties. Mine only shows general and hardware
I was about to return my headphones but this fixed the problem immediately. Thanks a lot.
I was about to return my laptop
That definitely worked! It instantly fixed the low volume and nearly blew my ears out, but it totally worked, haha. Thank you!!!
Scares the shit outta you when it kicks in!!
It sure does, and I had my volume all the way up too, haha!
@jackson savvy - you might want to mention that this will cause the default volume to jump to 100% on the headphones, so best to drop the volume down before hitting play after making the fix. Other than that, this fix worked! Thanks man.
But . . . the jump scare and hearing damage are part of the experience, right? Bwahahahahahaha!!
You literally solved an issue that actual Sony technicians could not solve even to present day. I was looking at forums from 2019 trying to fix the quality issue with no actual fixes to it. They all gave up and so did I. Until I came across your video. You sir are a genius.
So i did that but i need my mic back so is there a way to reverse the change, when i select the hands free option again it just tells me that i have wrong parameters
I don't have the services tab on mine. Just general and hardware.
1. Start Menu -> Control Panel
2. Devices & Printers
3. Right click on your bluetooth device, Properties
4. Services tab
5. Uncheck "Hansfree telephony"
6. Restart
Absolutely brilliant. I had this issue with absolutely horrible noise over the audio.
Quick note though; I believe because of the update or something weird with my Windows I couldn't find the Printer and Devices folder through the search bar, so I had to go through Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Devices and Printer, then everything he says but instead of Handsfree Telephony it says Remotely Controllable Device. Uncheck that.
Just in case you were getting really frustrated and had no idea what to do. I wouldn't know about that.
Love how they change so much of the basics, like control panel navigation, huh?
Hey can you help me out? My bluetooth headphones block out the low dcb sounds when I'm playing games but When I plug them in instead, they work fine. Any Fix?
2021 and this fix still worked with my Bluetooth wireless earbuds sounding from crap (no bass and crackly/muffled) to sounding similar to when I connect them to my mobile and its amazing. Good stuff man 6 years later :)
When I pressed apply, I literally said "Holy sh*t!" out loud. Thanks so much!
Thank you! Sound is much cleaner now!
Glorious sound, lol
DUDE. 7 years later and this is still the fix. THANK YOU!!!
for me after i turn off handsfree it shows that my headphones are disconnected in the sound device setting but in bluetooth setting theyre still conected
Thanks man I've been looking for a solution to this for a year! I ended up not using bluetooth for listening to music.
Thank you audio fix god.
+Pharmit24 Glad it worked for you sir!
Have you restarted it yet?
Hello, thank you, it fixed the sound quility but now i dont have input device? Do you maby know why?
How do you turn handsfree telephony back on ? I receive an error message that says the parameter is incorrect. Bluetooth service error
this fixed my headphones issue right away. Thanks so much!
I've never found a video that so easily fixes my problem! THANK YOU.
+Frank Theodore Good to hear, you're very welcome
I’m having an issue with my wireless headsets where if I have a mic enabled I can’t hear my game volume but once I disable it the in game volume comes back. I’ve tried two different wireless headsets and the same issue has occurred any solutions?
I did this for my Bose NC700 for another issue I was facing and I can't find that checkbox in the services-tab anymore because I wanted to try check-marking it back to see if it reproduces my issue again.
Once I uncheck the handsfree telephony box my headset automatically disconnects (it shows a red arrow) and does not play any sound. No idea on how to fix this :(
in Bluetooth settings i found that selecting my headphones and clicking 'Forget Device' then reconnecting the headphones fixed this issue
@@lilyuh6035 thanks that solved my problem
Thank you!! I was almost bought a new pair of headphones thinking that they were the problem but this fixed worked. You are the man.
+Patrick Blair Thank you sir!
It's 2022 and your method still helped me with an issue that was already driving me crazy.. thanks a lot!
It's been 7 years and a month, and this still solved my issue on the latest build of Windows 11 21H2. Brand new ASUS A15 laptop and brand new Razer Kaira Pro Xbox edition and sound quality, especially bitrate was lower when launching any game or call of duty title. this sorted the problem. Thanks!
THANK YOU !!!
Most welcome!
lmao what r u doing here
all you did is disabled the mic. You can just disable it in the recording tab next to the playback tab. I want a fix so that I can have normal sound quality when I use my bluetooth headset to play games that require voice chat like csgo, or playing with skype call.
We did more than just disable the mic, if it was that easy . . . I wouldn't have made a video for it. If you read the video description, you'll see it's not intended for that.
Don't know if this is relevant to you anymore, but all bluetooth headsets can only support 1 bluetooth sound profile at a time. This means either stereo sound or mono sound with mic and decreased bit-rate.
Did you find any fix? Not being able to talk while gaming is disturbing
@@pnoneb72 I did fixed it but sound got shitty after turning on mic
I want to revert it back to normal since I cant hear anything from it when I turned off the "handsfree telephony". but now, it says "the Parameter is incorrect" once I try to check the box again
It changes the input and I can't get it to have the input of the Bluetooth headphones. It's stuck on the internal input of my laptop. Is there a fix for this?
You sir, are a lifesaver.
Question: do you know what causes this and what that check box did?
Glad it worked for you, it basically told the computer that this was a device for listening only, no microphone. You'd think that selecting the correct profile would work, but it didn't in my case and it lead me to the handsfree telephony.
Huh, interesting.
Jackson Savvy but what if I want to use my mic too
then you have to put up with the shit bidirectional quality of bluetooth. This whole problem is because the bt wireless protocol uses half the bitrate for recording and half for listening in handsfree mode, wheras in headphone mode it uses all the bitrate for just listening.
I have a problem with my airpods when i try to play them on my windows 10 hp computer the sound cut out but works ok on my phone.
Thanks a million. worked like a charm. Couldn't find anything in 20 minutes on search.
Good deal!
7 years since it posted and i so grateful to you
when I hit apply after unchecking "handsfree telephony", I get a pop-up message entitled "Bluetooth Service Error" with a message saying "The system cannot find the path specified.", and the sound gets cutoff, but i cannot get it back, any clues?
BROO!! YOU'RE A LEGEND. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

+dryadson Under NO circumstances would I recommend using the microphone on that unit. I solely use it for wireless bluetooth sound only, so I don't have to worry about damaging the jacks on my more expensive electronics (laptop, note 3, tab s, etc . . .)

i do not have that option( hands free telephony) but i played around with the options i had and now it is working fine. in my case the problem was lag while streaming to speakers, now is perfect thank you!
Same here. I didn't have that option, so I found that I could select two different devices in playback options: one is the headphones with mic, and another one is just headphones. Click on the second one, and then click on default device. Problem solved.

Lol, You should take over Microsoft Support. You'd be more effective than their entire team.
Good lord, even their "Pro Support" is ridiculous. Drives me nuts when you HAVE to call them.
their support is actual trash, never ever take any tips from them, they are absolutely clueless. Every single response is "try troubleshoot" which has NEVER worked for me, ever, in my 20 years of using a computer
I'm convinced Microsoft keeps making unnecessary changes just so tutorials like this can't help people. They want us to spend the extra time just trying to make our fucking computers to work properly. Fuck microsoft.

It doesn't work. If I disable telephony, I can no longer choose Bluetooth as a playback device.
I had the same problem, which made me look for other avenues.
First I went to device manager and I noticed that the Bluetooth A2DP Source (responsible for good audio quality) had some corrupted files which made me start the CMD as an admin in order to fix the corrupted files, so firstly I inserted the following command "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" (without the " "), then after that finished I ran the next command "sfc /scannow" (also without the " "), after doing all of that I rebooted the PC and the problem was fixed!
I just reconnected the device cause that didn't work for me either. Then there was a new option in output devices that said (stereo) at the end and it fixed it
