➡️ If you play bass guitar, and have a broadband internet connection with access to CZcams - you've surely seen the sheer brilliance of @CharlesBerthoud by now. If not, I hope you have a spare change of pants nearby. Charles has taken solo bass playing to new heights over the last few years with his sensational videos covering everything from his arrangements of classic songs to his own original music. In this video, I have an absolute blast reacting to, and analyzing, his renditions of "Master Of Puppets" and "Nothing Else Matters" by Metallica - both played in completely different styles on a multitude of different basses. I break down the techniques he uses for both including slap and pop, double-thump, two-handed tapping - and then dissect his beautiful arrangement for "Nothing Else Matters" with a masterful use of bass harmonics and chordal tapping. Charles is inspiring the next generation of bass players, and I have an insane amount of respect for it!

Thanks for the kind words!! Really enjoyed your analysis, you’re 100% right about tapping - you’ve got to have the raw sound be nice and clean otherwise effects really won’t help much. And to clarify how many fingers I use when tapping - those fast flurries I usually don’t get the pinkies involved but more melodic, slower stuff the pinkies can help a lot

I’m a non-musician, so take my opinion with a grain of salt on this, but what blows me away when I hear a bassist or guitarist on Charles’ level is the fluidity and seeming effortlessness, no matter how complex the playing is. With highly skilled but lesser bassists and guitarists, I find myself straining a little while listening, unwittingly willing the player to make it through. With a player like Charles, I am filled with confidence and just sit back and enjoy the pure poetry as it emanates from his instrument.

But then a friend reminds me that having a hobby I enjoy will help keep me more sane even though I will never get close to Charles ability, he is a prodigy. I see you are probably thinking similar thoughts realizing you will probably never get to this level. Keep playing because your love of music. That's where I got off track.
I spent too much time playing in clubs and it got old and repetitive so I burned out. I still love music so that is why I brushed the cobwebs off my axe, to give me that hobby I still enjoy.

I think you nailed it with the statement that went something like, more than his excellent technique, you are impressed with his arrangement skills. I have thought this for some time. I used to think I was cool to play the bass line to James Bond or Dragnet. In Charles Berthoud's version of the Bond Theme he incorporates the strings and other instruments on the bass almost like The Call of Ktulu by Metallica.
I take pride in playing easy, steady, bass parts well and being able to play a little more complicated stuff when it is right for the song but Charles and Davey and approximately 100,000 extremely talented young ladies and gentlemen on youtube are a marvel to behold. It is not necessarily a competition all the time thank goodness for me, lol.

Charles is a master. I'm a guitar and piano player and I've dabbled in bass but every video by Charles makes me want to go out and buy a ton of basses and just become a dedicated bass player. I prefer acoustic guitar (I've had my Ovation Adamas for 20 years now) and my playing is very influenced by players like kaki King and Michael hedges; Charles got me to perfect my slapping and work on new tapping techniques. He's probably one of the best bass players right now; period. In my mind, hrs up there with the likes of Victor Wooten.

Notice a change in camera angle everytime he does it. Notice how fewer angle changes were in the 2nd video with no slapping. However still probable the best bass player I've ever heard for sure.
