  • "I’ve been studying this work for more than 20 years - performing and recording it has been a lifelong dream.”
    So says Lang Lang about J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations, a monumental keyboard work consisting of 30 variations introduced and concluded by an Aria.
    "This is the most creative and multidimensional work in the keyboard repertoire, it is also deeply emotional and goes straight to the heart,” he adds.
    “One can delve deeper and deeper into its different dimensions and always discover something new.”
    Watch Lang Lang perform Bach’s Goldberg Variations, BWV 988: Aria.

    I’ve listened to this wonderful Aria so many times played by different performers throughout my life and invariably enjoyed their particular rendition, whether fast or slow and even in syncopated form. However played it’s because Bach shaped the notes and made them forever sound beautiful, moving and wonderful. However, Lang Lang here choses to make the notes flow like water droplets trickling off an uneven surface during Autumn’s gentle rain. Lang Lang makes the notes appear, at times to hesitate, pool on the surface and then trickle momentarily faster until drained, only to resume their tempo once again until the next pause followed by sudden release. They are unmistakably Bach’s notes, but Lang Lang’s interpretation of how they should sound, here makes them special. I loved it, thanks Lang Lang. In contrast, go and listen to Gould’s interpretation, he creates quite a different picture.

      If you listen this piece played by many interpretes then you will have to agree that Lang Lang is leaning on Glen Goulds interpretation with slower pace but same type of emotional touch. Great interpretation but yet I like more Glenn Gould who knows to balance better the quiet calm retained parts with the emotionally more emphasized ones.

      @@e.s.2777 I’m currently learning/practicing this piece and use Gould’s 1981 version as my goal to work towards., as I prefer Gould’s slower pace (by the way I listened to the version in this clip at 0.75x speed and liked it better than at x1).

      Agreeing with the musical period doesn't mean playing in a dry and emotionless way at all. Playing in the "Baroque style" can be as expressive as this overly romantic, completely ouf of context approach... if not more. And no, playing this on a piano is not a valuable excuse for distorting the music in such a way.

    Those who believe that this is not the right way to interpret the work, that it refers to a more romantic interpretation, etc., should not forget that in Bach's time, the instruments he owned were the harpsichord and the clavichord.
    This is enough to understand that an interpretation on the piano instead of an instrument of that time, makes it "not authentic".
    Does this mean that we should only play Bach's music on the harpsichord or that we should try to make the piano imitate the harpsichord? Since a work is played on an instrument other than the one that was normally written, I consider it aesthetically very correct to use the possibilities of the present instrument and in this case of the piano. I believe that Bach himself, having a piano like this Steinway, would surely be inspired again on the interpretation of this work.

    • @Bortki
      @Bortki Před 3 lety +7

      I honestly think you can still fully use the possibilities of the piano and remain in a "Baroque spirit" (whatever that means). The piano is to me a very neutral and abstract instrument, it's not romantic in essence. There are much more possibilities of being "authentic" on the piano than just trying to imitate the harpsichord, which I think fails most of the time because the piano is a lot more neutral than the harpsichord (it then sounds dull, dry, not very convincing imho). Much more interesting to me is that the piano offers you the possibility to "imitate", to evoke a Baroque ensemble, a lute improvisation, a trio sonata, a concerto grosso... That is to me the way Baroque music should be played on the piano. Lang Lang's playing here is very colourful, very pretty, full of musical ideas, of course. It maybe evokes a string ensemble, possibly a trio or a quartet. But a quartet that plays Bach romantically with vibrato and rubato.
      "Romanticizing Bach" as Lang-Lang does is maybe a bit like re-painting a Picasso without the play on perspectives. You might still get a nice picture in the end, but you loose the elements which make the artwork so fascinating and unique, and with that, the essence of the work.

      George L the question it's not romantic intepretation, the question it's that there is no sound...
      no "appoggiato", no "soppesato", only 3 timbers of touch a real disaster, just to give an idea listen to this

      thanks for your comments.
      I know very well what the "established" interpretation is in terms of Bach's works on the piano. What I wanted to express is that since the piano was not Bach's instrument we do not know what his point of view would be or the way he would play his works on the piano. Today most executors play these works "in a safety zone" but on the other hand we are in the 21st century. why not give space to a different interpretation that may not be as the friend said above with his example with the Picasso painting, yes it may not be exactly the same result, it is nice nonetheless for me personally gives a new breath to the work. Also Glenn Gould recorded Chopin and Mozart sonatas, is this way of interpretation original? I like that there is a pluralism of ideas, aesthetics and imagination, that is my point of view, this is the beauty of art.

    • @Bortki
      @Bortki Před 3 lety +6

      It's all a question of what you consider a "modern" interpretation. To me this kind of over-romanticizing is typical of Baroque interpretations from the 50s and 60s, so in that regard I consider it more like an out-dated view than a modern 21st century (re-)reading. From time to time I listen to for instance Klemperer's Matthäus Passion. It's a very impressive monumental reading, highly dramatic, very dark. But it's a distorted interpretation. The thing is, in those times, musicians had the excuse not to be "historically informed". Now this excuse is not acceptable anymore.
      Don't get me wrong, I'm all for experimenting in classical music because that's the best way for it to live. I'm less disturbed by Bach played on synthesizers or as a jazz arrangement, as I am with this hybrid, distorted kind of playing. It sounds to me like making the music convey a message it inherently isn't able to convey. Emotions in Baroque music are very subtle and most of the time you don't need to add a lot to make it speak, otherwise it sounds very artificial to me, like an over-processed picture. That's just my opinion and my taste, and I mean, if people enjoy Lang Lang's recording, why not, good for them. But I'll stay with my Derzhavina and Schiff recordings.

      I think we should count ourselves lucky that musicians who actually create original music would not care so much. Otherwise we would still be banging bone against stone and singing Songhai we did not lose the essence or feel of the music.
      These conversations whilst sort of interesting are about as useful as a bucket with holes in it.

      I think both Lang Lang and Gould’s versions are peaking on their own styles - Lang Lang’s is sentimental, emotional, which is game changing in a sense to show Bach can be interpreted in a romantic way, while Gould stands for the rationality and the pure beauty of mathematics and nature.
