I always put each piece of hardware in it’s own small ziplock sandwich bag and label it. Ex: top right door, bottom left door, label each hinge with corresponding placement. Label paint box with same labeling on ziploc bag. I have done this for years and all my hardware goes back in it’s exact position and no problems with doors/drawers opening or closing.
😂 the tape-peeling...!! Omg I'm dying! You're hilarious. The hutch came out great. Thanks for your candor.
Same!! I laughed out loud. Too funny
I like it. Its still looks good. Even furniture isn't perfect. It has character of it's own.
You have way more patience than I do...the only thing I can think of is keep trying the hinges, move them around till you get the right one on the right door...it did turn out nice though...
That would be my suggestion too.
Martine Bangs yes it’s only 3 doors.. worth a shot.. perhaps just give yourself a small break for your mental health lol
This was my thought too
You are so cute to watch! You did bring many smiles to my face and several chuckles. Thank you for sharing your “harrowing” DIY experience. 🤗 I LOVE how your hutch turned out, it’s darling!!
You are adorable and your DIY “fail” looks better than what I’ve seen pros accomplish. I love that you are truthful and funny we need that, I need that.
You did a great job. I hope you figured it out. It looks very pretty.
Next time, don't destroy your paint job ;) The hinges are not the problem. Take off the cupboards that don't close properly, take off the hardware, and plane them. You'll need to repaint these areas when you put them back on. I have to do this all the time when I buy historic properties on the old doors and cabinetry, as the old houses have settled. Be careful when planing if you haven't used a planer before, it's easy to take off too much. Alternatively, you can wrap sandpaper around a block, but it will take a long, long time. By the way, people using paraffin to 'fix' troublesome drawers and cupboards aren't really fixing the problem, they are just putting it off. Good luck.
I agree we do this all the time. If you don’t have a planner use a electric sander and sand a little at a time til it shuts then put a small amount of paint to repaint.
An idea to figure out where to plane is to rub chalk on the edges. Open and close the doors/drawers. Where ever the chalk is ribbed off is where it needs to be planed down or sanded.
Rita Gary. just like the dentist does with the carbon paper, after a filling!!! 😂
Sirena Spades
You are right on the money!
Multiple coats are needed for this project. There's no helping that. So unless she wants to sand the entire thing WELL before starting, she's going to have this issue in the future, and its not a solution for this project. Marking hinges is a mistake, yes. Most definitely. But she's already learned that for future use and is asking for advice on fixing the current doors, not preventing this again in the future. Planing IS the proper solution now.
New to your channel, but I just wanted to say I love you videos like this. It just goes to show all of us views that things aren't as simple as throwing a coat of paint on and changing out some hardware. I love seeing the 'realness' of it all. Thank you for being open and honest with all of us!
Absolutely beautiful! You can’t even tell there’s a flaw. You gave me inspiration to do a hutch makeover too.
I know I’m 3 years too late but you are adorable and I love the DIY confessional. It feels like a DIY Reality show like you in the room talking to the camera. I was cracking up laughing.
Love this. And your perseverance paid off. Love the wood liners. I need them in my life. 🌸
Try exchanging the hinges on the bottom doors. The bottom left with the top right. I think that will do the trick! I love the "bend and snap" Ha, Ha! Good luck and blessings!
Love your ‘stories’. Learn so much from you. Thanks for sharing your experience. Learning what does not work is as important as what does x
I just used wax paper to put off fixing my door sticking problem on my DIY chalk painted china cabinet. Wow!! I will try the soap when that wears off. I already brought it inside. I am done sanding. Thanks for helping me be lazy. You are brilliant!
LOL!! I Love the drama of it, and look people are still commiserating with you, well done!
You did an amazing job! I definitely love your personality and your talent. Please share more 🙏💕
I love your videos! I have no idea how long you have been blogging, but you are a natural! I am so glad I found you because I have watched videos for at least 3 yrs., taken 2 chalk paint classes, and still have not picked up one of my many brushes I have bought for my “fabulous painting” of my furniture that is about 30-35 yrs. old. I have been afraid to start, knowing that if I start and run into problems, I will have failed. In my mind, when I do any diy, it has end up perfectly. You have taught me that I am not the only one who is going to run into problems, and you are even brave enough to share your “failures”, that end up turning out successfully. Thank you! Every other video I have watched and every other sales person have said this is sooo easy! You though, have been so honest, and comical (my kind of humor). I now do not feel so intimidated. You have shown me that failure is part of this game, and I can still come out a winner. Thank you for the courage! I am a subscriber, now and as long as you continue!
The tape peel and chick-fil-a trip killed me! Thank you for making me laugh!
Love this piece. Your hard work is much appreciated.
That was very good. Love the light distressed look and I enjoyed the Marvin Gaye interlude. The hinge situation is something so squirrely that the answer might never have occurred to most people. Thanks for sharing.
I love it even if all the doors don’t work, you did an outstanding job! It looks great and that is the most important thing.
Thank you for not being boring. You are bright, funny, and intertaining. And you did really well with the job. Others show only their hand ,some are so dry I can't learn anything because all I am thinking about is how they need to get moving. My Dad was very creative if the hinges are warped gently tap them back into shape. Also he would use a little Ivory soap and run the bar alo ng the area that is sticking (as you used waxed paper) great job keep it up . Signing off Scott's wife Vickir.
Love your sense of humour. Really enjoyed this video. Thank you. Looks lovely once done.
Swap the door upside down to the other side and vice versa, this could be your problem, also when you took the color out, and repaint the wood expands with cold, also you adding layers. Do not stop creating because of this hiccup. Learning process.
Same thing happened to me. I did exactly this, swapped the doors and they fit perfect
This is also the first thought that crossed my mind. Actually "looks" switched at initial glance.
This was my first thought
But the design on the doors shows where they should be. If the doors were swapped they would look upside down
It looks absolutely amazing!
I think this is the most hilarious tutorial on what not to do refinishing a hutch 😂 If it’s any consolation, it does look nice. The first rule of thumb when you take anything apart is to number it. Like in your case, door #1, hinge #1, door #1, hinge #2. Just take a small piece of masking tape, label them, easy peasy. Since you are way past that point for this project, the suggestions below are good. Just keep rotating hinges until they are all back in the correct order. Bless your heart. DIY’s can undo us sometimes, but yours is very entertaining. 🙂
No whining. It looks great!
You've done a beautiful job on this Hutch, I love it!
OMGeee it's GORG!!! I am thinking about doing this to my hutch and old office furniture (they are all black). Great DIY!
Beautiful.I think they make these upcycle diys look easier than they actually are.
I've binged watched your DIY's tonight and I must say that you are talented. Also, I love the story time before you start.
Sweetheart its not about watching you "suffer" its more about the fact that you are showing what an actual fit can and usually entails. You are not a top notch pro so anyone starting out and wanting to do their own diys you show that its not as easy as it looks! Anyway great job and I'm a new subbie bc of how real your videos are Tfs!
Thanks. I’ll remember to tag each hing during a project. Looks great though.
Looks great you inspired me to start working on updating mine thank you
The same thing happened to me when I did my first piece. Thanks for sharing the challenges, most often the videos I watch make it look easy.
This video inspired me to recreate your pretty nails. Thanks for that.
I don’t know proper words for the issues you had but I know that paint makes wood fat. Like so chubby that nothing fits anymore. If you sand off around the frame opening it will loosen it up...or just kick them open. No matter. It’s a beautiful piece of furniture. Nice work
The black hardware is beautiful!
Ty for the heads up & ty for the entertainment. I'm now subscribed!
It's adorable. Cute video.
It was so beautiful unpainted.
It's so beautiful💞 I hope every time you look at you can laugh and be proud.
Turned out beautifully
I feel your pain, I'm working on a piece o'crap right now that is frustrating me beyond words. Your hutch turned out beautifully though, nice job!!
Well it looks great!
GOOD JOB!!! Dont be so hard on yourself, you did an amazing job, really, I love that piece!!
I just watched a Cathy & Steve video to transform a hutch. Guess what he said....? He goes..i'm not removing the hinges. Haha. Now I know why.
That Kacha girl doesn’t remove them either and I’m thinking for the same reason. But then again she doesn’t take any of her doors off and she doesn’t paint inside her cabinets either.
Looks BEAUTIFUL!!!
Loved your story... very entertaining! Thanks for sharing.
You husband scraping the paint is literally the sweetest thing ❤❤❤
That was a stress fest. But, it really looks good. I plan on doing this and will make out and label all my hardware. Thank you and good luck with the door😊
Looks beautiful! Such great amusing video.
Absolutely beautiful
LOVE THIS! I too have wanted to burn a piece or two or twenty. It turned out beautiful and has such a wonderfully messy story now!
I loved your tape peeling segment. Very funny.
Absolutely gorgeous. Great job
I love this so much!!! You're amazing and the the hutch is drop dead gorgeous!
CAME OUT LOVELY
I admire you for showing you4 vulnerability in this project, that takes guts! Good idea to lightly plane the edges of the doors, because the paint is thick, and adds up to quite a lot of extra measurements right round. Then re apply paint much thinner to edges. You will get it right, it’s a lovely piece and you have almost done it proud. Never give up.
Absolutely love this video. You did an awesome job. I'm so inspired to work on an old piece of furniture gifted to me from a relative a long while back.😊👍
Turned out beautiful!
I'm just about to paint mine now and was looking for videos of inspiration. I'm so glad I came across this video. You are hilarious 😂😂. Your diy turned out beautiful.
You're a hoot! Just about to do an old dresser that's been floating around my childhood home since I can remember, I just turned sixty ha...it's been painted blue, white and faux wood...yuck, I'm painting it again....thanks for your tip, I totally would have made the same mistake!!
This looks wonderful.
Cabinet looks beautiful!!!
Great video! The hutch looks great and I love the distressed look better!
I'm a compulsive diy artist/up cycler [I tear things up] my ex was in the antique refinishing biz. The most important thing his boss taught us, you label drawers & hardware, top to bottom left to right. [Hardware A pkt] there's been plenty of times the fit after refurbishing created doubts about whether the [sharpie] labels were out of order. You only need to learn this once. Label & before pictures. Hutch looks fantastic!
Edit: everyone who says your hinges are out of order (not original placement) is correct. Sorry to confirm, switching them is a nightmare, but will only take 1 day ;)
It looks gorgeous!!
Amazing transformation. Love the distressed look better. Beautiful. Im inspired.
I just came across your channel. Well done for taking a disaster and turning it into entertainment 👍🏻
Great tip about labeling the hinges would never have thought of that!
Wow, love how it came out 💕❤️❣️👏🏼
Hubby and I got a good chuckle over the sexy tape peeling!
There's something in the air! I was chalk painting a sofa table I picked up for cheap cheap. It was to be my "experimental" entrance into the realm of chalk paint. After a sanding prep and 3 coats of paint I thought I was ready for wax. Starting applying the wax. I bought DECOART WAX that I picked up in the paint section of Lowes. It isn't a paste but liquid. Resembles school glue, but whatever. As soon as I started brushing on the wax, the chalk paint was lifting right off. I couldn't help laughing, thinking of your videos. If I hadn't seen your videos I probably would have been crying. But you've helped me realize- Stuff Happens. Back to square one. I'll either pick up a paste and see if that works better or I'll have to hose down my project and start over. Thanks for helping me keep things in perspective!!! LOL
Haha I'm so glad I could help you! I'm totally not glad your paint lifted...that's horrible. But you can do it!! I'm sure it will be absolutely stunning when you finish it :D
On Debi’s Design Diary she paints several pieces of furniture with DIY chalk paint. I’m going to try it in the spring when I can move my furniture outside to paint because of my furry 4 legged helpers lol.
@@betsysanders4524 Tyfs Debs diary,I have alot of ideas from her site about chalk paint.
It looks beautiful! You did a great job!
Thanks for the cautionary tale. I'm planning on re-doing the hutch my grandfather made 60+ years ago and I am going to make sure to mark which hinges go where when I take it apart.
Looks beautiful!
I love how you used the grey color inside the hutch. It looks gorgeous.
Well, your hutch looks super cute. Great job!!!! Glad you chose the flat black for the hardware. And love the wood back.
Hilarious, thank you for this - I really needed this today as I am busy with my first Annie Sloan project and things are not going well. Good luck with those doors, hope you come right. Love your honest feedback.
Loved this! I think it looks fabulous 👌!
First time watched your video you have stolen my heart.! I am not kidding first 30 sec. of the video was lmao. You are so fun to watch. My type of a person I would watch again and again. I just love your cense of humor!!!
what makes it perfect is that its imperfect. I love it
Oh dear I hope you got the doors back on! I just did a hutch as well and left the hinges on so they wouldn't get mixed up. Great video!
You really are gold on the comedy side. I understand your frustration but 1) it’s a learning curve and 2) it’s great entertainment.lol. How about ditching the doors and using baskets instead? I’m bursting with excitement for your next video! You have AMAZING content! I’m so happy to have found your channel.xxx
Thank you your video is very real that's what beginners need ...
It looks beautiful!
I love the brown inside great idea
Turned out beautiful!!!Aside from that one little thing..😊
The hutch looks beautiful. I love how you humorously show how things can go wrong in the process!
Even adding thin layers of paint add bulk to the piece. Fold a piece of graphite paper (not carbon paper) in half, right side out and close the door on it...go all around the frame to see where it is rubbing or sticking. You can sand or plane just those areas and repaint as needed. (If the doors become too loose you could add a magnetic pop-latch.)
For future projects involving drawers or doors, sand a little of the wood away BEFORE painting the piece. Work and complete one door or drawer to see how much to sand off the rest if the piece. Looking forward to your next project.
OMG the bend and snap! ❤
You are so hilarious, loved it. It's all in the prep work. All those little annoying preppy things (like sanding) we should do but hate to do are so important. In the end they save all the hassle of fighting with it later. Video was great and thanks for sharing.
LOL, you are hilarious! The hutch turned out beautiful!
In the end it looks good. Well done.
love the plank in the back.
I agree with Sirena Spades on the planning. The moisture in the paint probably swelled the wood a bit. It may go away on its own but if it does it would probably be ages so planning is a more solid fix.
It’s gorgeous!
It is really. A Beautiful peace.👾
It came out so beautiful!Congratulations!!👏👏👏your hard work paid off!!😊👏👏👏
Not sure if you will see this but Ihave to say I just love your sence of humor and your work is GORGEOUS~
Aww thanks so much, hon! Thanks so much for watching! 😊
You do know it looks fab! I have a hutch, the bottom is just storage. Just open the door that does work, slide things over to store them and cut yourself some serious slack. You have done a wonderful job!
Rubbing a candle or bar of soap on sticky drawers, works well too!🥰
