i binged this and sophomore year a few months ago. there was one week where the whole cast kept saying “truly” before everything, and the next week they kept saying “you simply must...” it didn’t seem like they were knowingly doing a joke; it was just like when a friend group hangs out a bunch and their vocabulary syncs up.

the funny thing is that was probably Sunburst, which is an unreasonably high-level spell for a 9th-level party to be dealing with, but is 100% vanilla
@@aldar8240 as a spell tho sunburst isn't that good for its level - as a DM I try to think less about the level of the spell and more about its effects. A villain having meteor swarm or wish (both 9th level) is going to do significantly more damage than one with gate or time stop - which whilst great spells aren't really going to destroy a lower level party depending on how they're used.
And it's the same at most levels. I'd actually to go far as to say Titania's mass suggestion spell could have been far more deadly

_honestly, this is a beautiful abstract showing of tatania’s internal conflict,, fighting against herself,,, the naked man representing temptation,, the cockroach as her disgust in herself, the worker symbolising her hard-working effort to win this battle with herself,,,, the hairy baby as her failure’s that she still cant let go of,,, truly beautiful to see this perspective._

Bullshiting is an important skill
One of many things I love about Brennan's DM-style: he never unduly tries to nerf his players. Like Ricky's abilities came in so clutch in this fight and a lesser DM might have bullshit something like 'the creatures don't technically count as fey so that won't work', but Brennan just rewards his players for playing smart and lets them feel powerful while still making challenging, engaging fights
As a DM, this only told me to overestimate my players and tpk them :)

Also I think that the rule of cool is something that Brennan is a big fan of.
Yeah he just makes his monsters incredibly powerful to match. It's really inspired me to do the same. Just let go of CR as a requirement.

I've been DMing for about four years now and when Brennan explained how combat worked in this episode, I lost my mind. I love this.
This and the subway fight were genius
I really thinking about that. This battle Challenges are amazing. Complete change. Because even with simple weaks enemies, the tension is wild.
I have only been dming for about a year and I now immediately wanted to figure out how I can work something like this into my campaign

I’ll bet if you taught Emily how to code she’d be a natural hacker. She’s so good at teasing out loopholes and finding different ways to do things that constantly keep Brennan on his toes. And all in character, too!
Sophia trying to smash a toilet thru a slightly burned spot on the ground… is the exact kind of creativity that makes these campaigns exciting, and keeps Brennan not only on his toes, but I think is what he loves most about doing this…

Stephen Sondheim looking to an ordinary wild bear and speaking calmly to it to become his mount seems so natural that the Umbral Arcana need not apply. This is the head canon I love to build. Thank you.
He was in the Lion King, it makes sense for him
(They did reveal in the end that Sondheim is "some kind of powerful entity at the heart of this city," meaning that he sees through the Umbral Arcana just like Esther and Alejandro.)

In the campaigns my friends and I run, we always ask if [absurdly high number] hits and it drives our DM insane. Funny every time. Every time we ask if a 29 is enough to hit the very low danger level enemy in front of us, 20 minutes are taken off of his lifespan

This is one of Brennan's all time master class DM game. The amount of questions and scenarios being thrown at him, the quick thinking and adjusting to fit narrative and game sense, the daunting style of play he has with the fairies. It's all just a masterful performance.
I feel like the more complicated or awesome scenarios become the more excited brennan becomes just to witness it much less narrate it

Let’s be honest, this whole fight was an excuse for everyone to let out at much theater kid energy as Siobhan had been radiating the whole campaign. Also important character stuff, I guess.

It is so bittersweet watching this episode for the first time after Stephen Sondheim's death and seeing how beloved he is by all of the cast. May his memory be a blessing.

@@aduckinlingerie My "Most Powerful" character was a 3.5 good cleric specialized in positive energy channelling. He was the controlling fore in a mostly Nuetral./Evil party never underestimate it. ( for people not as old as me in 3.5 for a cleric wisdom governed your bonus spells and spell save and charisma governened your turn undead pure channelling of divine/unholy powere)
More performance checks in this session than most campaigns.

Huh, the numbers do enhance the story telling. The ritual has a DC 10, so Misty’s +11 in performance means if not for extenuating circumstances, Misty literally couldn’t fail this.

If I had a nickel for each time Brennan had Episode 12 be a fight against a hated rival of Siobhan's character who was supported by otherplanar forces, I'd have two nickels, which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice
Brennan realizing that he put basically everyone outside of counterspell range is exquisite
Well he doesn't want to kill the PCs
This fight was so intricate and there were so many turns per round and literally so many spells and blessings and effects so Brennan handled this and kept track of it beautifully. Like there was legit so much going on and he still had it all moving like clockwork. He’s so cool-
I've said this when I watched it before it was public, and I'm going to say it again: this is the *best* fight the entirety of Dimension 20 has ever had. It's so thrilling to watch it feels like the finals of the Olympics
Stephen Sondheim passed away almost exactly a year after this video released. I feel it is very fitting that a performance so full of light and wonder would become a part of his legacy. He truly was magical.

I've seen the finale of the first season of Critical Role and the ending of the first season of Dimension High, AND participated in a homebrew campaign that lasted over six months and ended with the rather Undertale ending of a Monk convincing TWO super evil entities to give up their evil ways and embrace the power of dance and I think this is STILL the most chaotic and insane session of D&D I've ever seen.
I totally wanted Patti LuPone to come out from backstage and kick Titania in the neck.

@@daniellins4114 it's bc Ally added extra difficulty to her death save. So it's like in class when the teacher forgets to assign homework but a student reminds them to. "Do we have homework tonight" was a mockery of Ally's pedantry.

He's also doing math/moves/attacks/rolls/remembering an ungodly amount of spells, ect. i say we cut him some slack on wether or not something is up or downstage

I have auditory processing issues which means that, while I technically can hear the videos, I do struggle with videos if they don’t have accurate closed captions. As a lot of people have mentioned, there’s a lot of issues with the captions. Please try and work on them

What issues did you have specifically because the close captions seem great to me. Maybe they just add them a few days after uploading.
@@eoincampbell1584 I just checked again and its the same as before, a large amount of the captions are incorrect (example: @1:25:50). Basically, there are several moments that someone using captions would struggle understanding what's happening because of how incorrect they are (saying this from personal experience as I have to go back several times and focus intensely to even understand when the captions are wrong).
I wonder if they outsource captioning. Whoever did this episode might not know RPG terms (bardok? Really? It's bardic). But there are captions that just don't make sense logically. Overall, extremely lazy transcription here regardless of RPG knowledge. What sucks is that stupid CZcams removed community captions in September so we can't do captioning for them, either. It's better than nothing in my opinion, but subpar captioning is a letdown. If I were deaf or was hearing impaired, I'd be really frustrated and often confused.
