Undercover in a Stolen Phone Market in India

  • I went undercover in a stolen phone market in India. This is where your phone might end up! Stolen and recycled phones end up here from pickpocket gangs and electronic recyclers for resale. Fake Chinese iPhones are sold here too. Avoid shopping at these black markets. I'll also tell you how to avoid pickpockets.
To avoid pickpockets and protect yourself from theft, here are some practical tips you can follow:
Stay vigilant and be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to the people around you and any suspicious behaviour. Stay alert in crowded areas, public transportation, tourist spots, and busy streets.
Keep your valuables hidden: Avoid displaying valuable items such as expensive jewellery, large amounts of cash, or flashy electronic devices. Please keep them in a secure place like a money belt, hidden pocket, or bag close to your body.
Use a money belt or secure pockets: Money belts are pouches worn around your waist, under your clothes, where you can store your passport, credit cards, and cash. Alternatively, use zippered or buttoned pockets that are harder for pickpockets to access.
Minimize your wallet contents: Carry only the necessary items with you, such as one credit card and a small amount of cash. Leave unnecessary documents, extra credit cards, and valuable items safely at your accommodation.
Avoid keeping everything in one place: Distribute your cash, cards, and identification across different pockets or compartments. This way, even if you lose something, you won't lose everything.
Be cautious in crowded places: Crowded areas are prime targets for pickpockets. Maintain extra caution in markets, public transportation, bus stops, queues, and tourist attractions. Keep your hands on your belongings and be wary of distractions created by strangers.
Secure your bags and backpacks: Use bags with secure closures like zippers, and keep them closed and in front of you, especially in crowded places. Avoid leaving bags unattended or hanging them loosely on the back of chairs.
Beware of distractions and scams: Pickpockets often work in teams, with one person distracting you while another steals your belongings. Beware of people causing a commotion, asking for directions, spilling something on you, or acting overly friendly.
Stay away from overly crowded public transport: If possible, avoid overcrowded buses, trains, or subway cars where it becomes easier for pickpockets to operate. Wait for the next one or choose a less crowded time to travel.
Trust your instincts: If something feels off or suspicious, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. Personal safety should always be the priority.
Remember, no method is foolproof, but following these tips and staying vigilant can significantly reduce the chances of becoming a victim of pickpocketing.

Instead of keeping your phone in backpack I used to keep it in front pocket. But just ensured that music/songs are on and you had your ear phone in place. So if incase music/song gets stop then *understand* that someone has stolen your mobile. Most of mumbaikar try/use this trick in local.

I still remember when I bought one plus 6 on it’s launch date back in 2018 and just after 3 days it was pick pocketed at Hauz khas metro station. That was my first and only experience of getting pickpocketed. It was 10:30 at night and I had no idea what to do next. For an hour I just stood at the station clueless. The next day I tried filing an official police complaint at the police station and this was more hurtful for me than getting my phone stolen. The cops didn’t entertain my complaint and just said “Ye sab toh hota reheta hai. Iski kya complaint likhein.” But if a VIP’s phone get stolen, it’ll take 2 hours for the cops to find it and bringit back to the person. A common man just have to take it like a good little boy.

The other time in NYC. It was more a bump and run. I was waiting at a corner, trying to cross the street. One guy bumped me from one direction, and the other bumped me from another direction. Both of them took off at full speed, going different ways. The good news is this was so long ago that I lost mainly travelers' checks. I was able to get back most of that money once I reported them stolen.

While I can appreciate people trying to recycle things and keep things out of landfills I don't like at all people selling stolen phones, giving an easy way for criminals and pickpockets from keep doing what they are doing. It also is a shame because there are plenty of people who don't know any better and would be fooled into buying a phone they can't even use, doesn't work, is blocked, and so on. At same time I hate companies who try to stop you from selling or trade things you purchased, like things you buy these days aren't really yours and they only want you to sell it back to them at basically no value and pay full price for a new phone. I miss the days when we could buy games or other electronics and we fully owned them and could do anything we wanted with them.

After watching your videos for some time I've decided India is one of the last places I'd ever want to visit. It seems extremely dangerous. So much so that you sell a book on how to stay safe. Low food standards, countless scams, and rape culture. This country seems unsafe and better off viewed through CZcams videos like yours. Your videos are great and I'll continue to watch them but I can't fathom the concept that you believe everyone should visit India.

Good job Karl! Another reason why you see only old phones is when a stolen/lost phone is reported to the police, they put the IMEI on watch list and monitor whenever one of these is turned on and used by a cellular network.. So these criminals, they put these phones/laptops in storage for many years till they become obsolete.. With hundreds of phones getting stolen in India every single day, the police cant maintain the list and eventually remove the older records from the watchlist...

Here they will steal the phone and it makes it way in to a more poorer area and are sold at a quarter or half and they will just say “phone for low price” or something along those lines. it’s usually stolen in in the poorer areas and sold at a lower price outside nearby shopping centre it’s quite weird how they only sell them in a place called Bellville but it makes sense because it’s the 4 most busiest. There’s tons of shops for unlocking Face IDs and passwords where thieves go to unblock stolen phones And it is a hot spot for of crime such as selling counterfeit goods, robbery, muggings, and pickpockets
