  • Electric vehicles in true BLIZZARD. Good idea or not?
I've owned my 2021 Tesla Model 3 for almost 20,000 miles now and have been itching to get a hardcore winter storm to truly test how an EV handles the extreme cold and snow. January 29th, 2022 gave me just that. A legit Nor'easter with the potential to break localized snow records in the New England Area. So... How did the Tesla do? Well better than the guy who drove into the water!

Electric or ICE, what I've found in my many years of driving in MA, NH, and ME is to cut *off* the heat to the windshield when driving in heavy, but dry snow on a day like this past Saturday. Keep the windshield cool and all the snow bounces right off - no wiper or washer action needed at all. Most cars, ICE included, have trouble heating the whole windshield enough to positively melt all the snow when the outside temp is below about 20-24 anyhow, especially when moving 35mph+ as you found out. It wasn't the Tesla's fault. No vehicle I have ever driven in on a day like last Saturday could keep the glass warm enough for washer fluid squirts. A squirted windshield also attracts more snow, which then partially melts, then refreezes, tripping up the wipers. Blah. Just keep the glass cold and dry. You can still put some heat out the floor and panel vents and stay decently warm, especially with the seat heaters in today's cars (and assuming that you have decent winter clothing for the day.) Keep the fan speed up with as much outdoor (not recirc) air as possible too in order to keep the insides from fogging - especially with multiple people in the car. Set the air to vent and floor and moderate the temperature down, but keep the fan up. I usually leave climate on automatic, but not on a day like this.
One added, admittedly extreme trick is, if I am going to park outside when it's snowing hard, a few minutes before I park, I turn the heat completely OFF and even open the windows. Get all that cabin and glass good and cold before parking. The snow will settle on cold glass and there won't be any scraping needed later. 'Just brush it right off. If it's a wet snowstorm don't bother, but with dry, cold snow these tricks work well.

@@theonetruemorty4078 You say "Driving is fun again. Smoking every macho guy or diesel head truck dude off the line at a green light" but driving is about much more than straight line acceleration, does it handle well in the corners? can you feel the road through the wheel or is the electric power steering too numb? does it weight transfer well? I'd imagine it would struggle to rotate as it's 50/50 weight distribution, but has a much higher mass moment of inertia than a comparable 50/50 mid-engined car. Because nothing is more embarrassing than smoking someone off the line, just to have them fly past you as soon as there's a bend in the road.

Not only should the tail-lights be cleared whenever opportunity comes, also the ice on the vipers need to be crushed and cleared off. The ice cumulates because of the heat coming from the glass, and could be minimised by turning all heat off. Then the snow stops melting and turning into ice, sticking to the part that has no direct contact to the glass.

Charging on a fast charger hasn't been more than 20 minutes for me yet, but in cold, if you don't precondition the battery (heat it up) it will take longer to charge in winter. If you know what you're doing, then it shouldn't be a problem. I, too, wish he shared his much energy per mile he used compared to summer. I've heard the versions with the heat pump are really efficient in the winter, but I'll find out soon.

I know it's been a while but it's awkward that you're asking those questions after seeing a video and knowing that Model 3 LR that he has is around 80kwh capacity and did this 140 mile trip in one go.
From that you can deduct the charge speed. From the wall at 8kw one can plug it in at 8pm and have it charged up by 6am, about 10h later.
Supercharger is around 160kw or 240kw which gives you an ideal time of 30min or 20 min respectively but given that the process slows down past 80% it can take additional 10-20 min per charge.
To top it up by 40-50% during any trip with 160kw supercharger it takes about 15 min to get it from 10% to around 60-70% which is equal to around 150 miles of added range.
Repairs afaik are via Tesla app. You book a spot, if the repair is simple, they drive to you and fix it on your drive. If more work is needed, you should get a designated garage to handle the replacement. There might be other ways I'm not aware of - I don't own a Tesla.
Warranty for Model 3 LR is I think 7 or 8 years or 50k miles whichever comes first. That said I don't know about many Teslas battery packs failing. Most of the replacements I saw were after around 100k miles done (for Model S which have longer warranty than Model 3 and the latter is just not "old" enough for any warranties to run out).

Significantly cheaper. Like not even close. That's with NHs extremely high electricity costs too. Although I do get my electric at a decent discount with my time of use meter
During the summer months (before my electric rates, and everyone else's, went up), I was able to drive close to 150 miles for the cost of 1 gallon of 87 octane.
Now, with the colder weather, and my increased electric cost, I can drive roughly 90 miles for $2.99

Interesting but does not help me. I live in CT on a mountain with a 15% grade to 650 feet. It is a long-sustained climb. My neighbor says he can get home if the snow is under 4 inches in his Tesla model 3 with AWD and snow tires. More than that it gets stuck and he has to wait for a snowplow to plow the road to get home. It is like when I had a FWD car with snow tires - it suffered the same fate. I think the best I can do is a hybrid car or move out of my home and live somewhere else where I don't have the crazy climb because we get these northeasters as well.
