  • Another winter storm rolled through our neighborhood last night, and that was a perfect opportunity to see just how well a Tesla can handle not just cold weather, but deep snow that buried other cars up to the doors. Here's how it performed!

You can activate a single wipe and spray the windscreen. I was driving my model 3 LR in snow last week and had to mess with the screen - having to keep pressing the button is not cool. You cannot put the wiper properly on like this. Very, very bad and unsafe design.

@@derekhastings8481 It activates a single swipe and opens the wiper controls on the screen. So its literally a single touch of the screen. If you believe a single touch of a screen is a safety concern, then I have some very bad news for you about modern vehicles.

Studies have shown for a long time that looking away from the windscreen to adjust things is distracting. Tesla like being different - I get that, but I think they have put too much onto the screen. Other manufacturers have developed better driver environments. The BMW iDrive control is excellent for example. I also think that Tesla should have used a heads up display for speed, etc. Opinions vary.

Thanks for the fun plowing video! BTW, we've got a 2020M3 and we have no issues turning on the wipers. Try these 2 things - the hard one is first: Push the button on the left stalk and not only do the wipers come on but the control icon pops up on the screen so you can pick any setting you want. The easiest way for me? Tap the right scroll wheel and say "Turn On The Wipers". Or "turn off the wipers", or "set the wipers to auto". Voice recognition in our car is stellar and it can do a lot of what you want done without searching through any menus or looking for any icons at all. "Turn on the driver seat heater", "set cruise to 75", "play Eagles Fly by Sammy Hagar", "what's my tire pressure". Without a doubt, that right scroll wheel is possibly the best control in the car. Well, maybe except for the right watt-feed pedal. :)

I’ve had a Ford Edge for several years, and recently picked up a Model Y. I just finished up a 2000 mile road trip in with the Y, In mostly wet weather, and on more than one occasion, I pressed in on the right stalk to flip on my wipers instead of the left stalk, because that’s what the Ford uses to activate a wipe (and clean).

The biggest problem in SNOW (after tyres) is the undercarriage hitting the snow, causing the car to lift and tyres lose traction. If you don't have much ride height, all the great snow tyres in the world will not help. They'll just pin as vehicle gets high- centered. I wish the Model 3 and Y had adaptive suspension with a ride height adjustment for snow etc. If you had a set of Vredsteins or Nokian Hakkas, that Y would be like a snowmobile.

    • @jimmyjames8736
      @jimmyjames8736 Před 3 lety +3

The 7.2kw system is rated for 32 hrs runtime on a tank of gas at full load. In power outage conditions if you were just running the furnace blower, refrigerator, some lights and a tv you would probably be running that system at 30-50% of its max capacity. At those loadings then the truck should run things for 3 or 4 days on a tank.
To hook up the truck to your breaker box requires having a transfer switch pre-installed by an electrician. It provides the connection point for your truck and also disconnects the main feed so that your power does not exit your house into the damaged power grid.
I think Ford undersized the battery pack on the f150 hybrid though. The 1.5kw battery pack is about 20 pounds worth of battery in a full size truck lol. At least 5kw worth of battery would have been a better match. This would have allowed much more efficient usage of the engine when recharging the battery since it has much more generating capacity than it can feed that little battery pack to recharge it without damaging it. It has the generating capacity to recharge even a 10kw battery pack at a 3c charge rate (20 minute charge rate) which is about the max charge rate you can use.

Don't almost hit the fire hydrant this time Roman! Flashback from last winter...LOL
I'm up in Canada Tommy, that is a decent snow fall for over night, unless you are in the mountains by the snow belt then you can get over 3 feet in a dump.
EV's would be fun in the winter but on ice, the extra weight stopping might be not so good, or the range losses because of the cold too...?
The snow can be fun but when you are in a 1/2 ton 4x4 with big tires on the highway doing the speed limit and the snow is coming over your hood like that and more it can get a bit hair raising for a bald canuck even.

What is the tire size again? I see that you swithed to 19” Martian wheels, but normally Model Y has 255 width tires. These crossclimates seems to be narrower to me.

Just drove half way across Canada in a cold snap (-30C to -38C) (-50C windchill in some spots)
3 tesla sedans pulled on the shoulder with hazard lights on. Whether they're broken down or had to pee, I don't know. But we noticed it and thought I'd point that out.

How’s your experience going uphill in the snow w these tires? I have the CC SUV on my cars and they’re disappointed on inclines. I’m now thinking of switching back to dedicated winter tires next yr.

With the battery located at the lowest point (Low center of gravity) you’d expect EV’s to have superior snow traction vs comparable ICE vehicle! Loved this video. Life is too short, go out and play in the snow regardless of age!!

what size rims? and all weather sucks because although you can keep them on all year round the tread wear is shit so even though you are not having to change tires, you get 50% of the performance of a winter tire and you will be replacing tires a lot sooner than normal. best option is to just have two dedicated sets of winter/all season tires

Certainly better than a 2021 Nissan Armada! We just got 14" new snow in Indiana and my rental Armada got stuck in snow mode and 4X4 Low where my wife's 2020 RDX went right through in comfort mode. Both have factory stock tires.
