John Smith I agree. This notion that they wouldn’t be able to win in this era is stupid at best. That team with Harp had the ultimate switch ability. Harp6-6, MJ6-6, Pip 6-7, TK6-10, DR 6-7. They were the small ball before it was even a thing. The only person that couldn’t shoot and that was DR. Still DR brought enough to negate that.
The only thing that stunted Ron's growth were the knee injuries......period.

@@78binks he went from averaging 22 a game as a Cav to 23 a game in his first season as a Clipper.....to 19 the second year....18 the 3rd and 4th year and back up to 21 points in his final season as a Clipper if I'm not mistaken. His numbers were never bad at all. He was just a very unselfish player.

Ron contributed great in Phil's systems. That knee injury affected his athletic ability. He was able to adapt and continue an amazing career. So many former all stars who didn't win shit would die to be in his shoes.

Facts. The thing about Harp was he was never a selfish player-- even when he was the alpha dog. Other than his rookie season, he never really hogged the ball. Was always willing to pass to an open teammate. The fact that he swallowed his pride and took a severely diminished role with the Bulls tells you he was all about being stand up team player and winning championships. It had nothing to do with him believing his skills were not up to the level they used to be. He was a class act.

Ron Harper used to out play Prime Clyde Drexler ,Dumars ,and ReggieMiller with lesser shooting attempts than Jordan. J.C does a great job at breaking down players weakness or knit picking their stunted growths but with Harper and especially Penny hardaway he was off a tad . PENNY was a even better 3pt shooter than he ever gave him credit for

Before his injuries you could have an argument that the only better shooting guards in the league that were better than him were Jordan and Drexler.

I’ll give y’all Dumars. But Reggie Miller didn’t come into his own until the mid 90s by that time the injuries had taken a toll on Harper. If we’re talking Kings Mitch Richmond I’ll give you him. But Warriors Mitch Richmond didn’t have the green light like Kings Richmond did because he shared the load with one Hall of Famer (Mullin) and one that should definitely be in the Hall(Hardaway). Blackmon, and Moncrief wasn’t heading towards the end of their peaks while Harper’s was rising. And Toney’s was cut short because of injuries.

Good comparison. Both X-factors for their respective championship teams. Iggy had more rope to freestyle on offense than Harper did. Mainly because Iggy anchored the 2nd team off the bench and had more of a green light, where Harper had to fall in line behind MJ and play his role without disrupting Jordan's dominance. Iggy also never suffered from any severe injuries, so he's been able to sustain his level of athleticism for a longer period of time. Probably due to his conditioning. Dude is swole.

Injuries but don’t get it twisted. He was a good player but not great after those injuries. He could fly. He was very athletic and long.
Lemme bring up 1 other point as well. That 89-90 season where he got traded to the Clippers, Harper was playing at an elite level. WIth how stacked the West was with guard talent and playing for a "lowly" Clippers squad, I'm not sure he would've been named to the All-Star team, but with the numbers he was putting up, he damn well should've been! If that was a glimpse of "Prime Harper", can you imagine what kind of numbers he would've put up during his peak years??? The torn ACL really robbed him of that explosiveness we once saw with the Cavs. I mean, you would see it occasionally post-injury but just not with the regularity. He would've been in the discussion as top shooting guards of the 90's. Better than Reggie. Better than Sprewell. Better than Richmond.
There's no discussion he was as good as MJ, ever. Only Kobe has ever come close. But during his hey day, Harp was one of the few that would not back down from MJ's greatness and always brought his A-game when his team faced the Bulls.
Numbers was still above par after the injury in LA lol. Numbers didn't dip drastically until he made the decision to take on the role of the Bulls point guard and defender.

I always loved it when Harper replaced Steve Kerr off the bench Ron Harper was part of the BIG TEAM Bulls , and often played the small Forward , or shooting guard position for giving Jordan , and Pippen . That is three living legends Harper covered , and did very well. He never seemed to replace Rodman as Rodman seemed to play entire games whenever possible. This explains why whenever he scored on a drive on a big leap he always got benched right away.

Harper was a BEAST! I remember him bringing that heat everytime my hometown Bulls played his teams. He was limited by injuries THATS IT. We were happy as hell when he came to Chicago. Even at 60% of himself his defense and wingspan along with MJ, PIP, AND RODMAN was a defensive shutdown crew with high basketball I.Qs and leadership!! Love that dude!

Admittedly, I recently began viewing your work. While I've enjoyed the videos I've watched, especially in relation to the players you've chosen to highlight thus far, there is one element that I'd like to see you cover a bit more: a player as a person.
I'm not asking/expecting a deep dive. Your videos would have to take on a whole new life. Instead, I'm suggesting something about the player...an experience... a challenge/struggle...a personality trait/characteristic, etc.
With this particular video focusing on Ron Harper, I think he lends perfectly to what I'm suggesting.
In the early/mid 90's, Ron came to the Clippers via trade. As a fan who was in my early 20's, it was the first time (in a long time) to be excited about a Clippers' personnel move (we know they certainly couldn't draft back then). Ron gave the Clippers a proven scorer, and one who could play defense. Ron's accomplishments on the court are well known to most fans. However, this is not what I remember most about Ron Harper.
When Ron was becoming a superstar in college, it meant more time in front of the camera. What many fans noted early on was how Ron seemed to never provide time to answer a few questions...or offer a comment about the just-finished game. Ron was gaining a reputation as a snob off the court...as though he hadn't the time for some ill-informed sports journalist. As he moved into the pros, this reputation followed him. When Ron began noticing the early press, and how many teammates said he seemed standoff-ish, Ron finally reached out to his agent for 2 things: 1) Help with a problem that had affected him all through childhood, his teenage years, and now as a young adult, and 2) Help with finding the best way to announce to the world that he had stuttered horribly his whole life, and how ashamed it made him feel, and as a result of incessant teasing, Ron would isolate himself socially, and bury that drive/frustration into his basketball game.
Like I said, it was very poignant, and extremely brave for an NBA star, in the early 80's, mind you, to find the courage to say that he was a stutterer. He not only wanted to finally get the right help for it, but to also speak out so other kids in the same predicament would see that it need not define them, and that solutions are available. That whole time said a lot about Ron and his character, I thought.
Lastly, I realize that most NBA players won't have such a story, or experience, but I can guarantee that, if you look deep enough, you'll find something in the story of every NBA'er that had a defining moment in their path to becoming a professional athlete.
Ron was really a great combo guard. He was a decent stand still shooter. Great lead ball handler. Athletic defender. And apparently under appreciated by the Cavaliers. And we will never know why.

Ohio is and has always been political, they said he was running with a bad crowd and he was really close to one of them DopeBoys that kept appearing in court and Harper loyalty to them after being warned was 1 of the main reasons they moved him .rumors of if him smashing the owners ( wayne embry)of Cavs daughter at that time was alleged.

1990 Clippers when Ron played, I became a Clipper fan. 30 games later Clipper injury. That was that
Ron was an example of intelligence, resilience and teamwork.
He accepted a minor offensive role to become a role player in offense and being a defensive top dog...the result: championships .
He did the same later with the Lakers.
I'm from NE Ohio. He went to Miami of Ohio. When he came into the league they said he was a Jordan type player. He had some injuries and he could never fly like he did...a d he was a great leaper. I thought he would fizzle out buy he changed his game and became a key secondary player. He ended up having a great career because he was able to alter his game.

I saw him and he was phenomenal at Cleveland - on his way to upper echelon stardom the least during that time... really nice video but you left out his athleticism and exceptional body control (greater than most players today in the air), which meant more during the time period of his hayday as he could take a blow and still score...the injuries definitely stunted his growth as many athletes develop their shot in the NBA...overstated was the 3 ball as that was not prevelant during this time period...
Hollywood Harp. As a shorty he was one of my fav players athletic and a high basketball IQ. When the Cavs traded him to the clippers I was shocked. After the trade he continued to get buckets for the LA clippers. and even after the knee injury in 91 he came back getting buckets and the clippers made 2 playoff appearances. He singed with the bulls in 1994. to hoop with his guy Scottie Pippen and excepted a new role he no longer focused on getting buckets but playing defense and using his high basketball IQ. Salute Ron Harper.. I don't think he had a stunted career I agree he was not a pure shooter but his career was dope.

I definitely agree with what you’re saying about demanding the assignments. However, if the rest of the team doesn’t back him.. either he gets benched or mess up the whole team defense.
Good breakdown fam. Now thinking back, you're right about his J. He was one of them, intangible players. In his earlier nba years, he had the athleticism and them sneaky quick hands on D to give MJ some issues, as they went at it on several occasions. I give him absolute credit for realizing that he fit a "role" when he came here to Chi. And with all due respect, I wish I could find the video from nbc5 chicago, where they spoke with him after they beat the sonics. Harp was obviously tipsy, and you know he stutters at times. I was excited for him, that he was asked a question, and the live delay button must've gotten stuck. Again, I was excited and laughing with him as he started his answer off with saying "Sh!@@@@@@DD"😲🤣, trying to get it out. Man, I was rollin and ended up crying from rollin so hard. Ron Harper should have made a all star team when he led the clippers to the playoffs in 92 and 93 back to back seasons (18.ppg and 5 assist) with his below average 3pt % he still was servicable 20 ft on in and broke the defense down 1on1 while being a solid assisting playmaker from the 2spot.

Folks forget that as a Laker it was he and Rick Fox who was out there guarding the main opposition often times. Harper was a very smart all around player who was still effective after he had no knees left. He has a son who I'm sure will be a solid pro somewhere.

i saw a a similar post where it says that Ron Harper also played with the Cavs ( now i remember Derek Harper played with Cleveland, but i never knew that Ron also played with Cleveland. What year did Ron Harper play for Cleveland.
Ron Harper was drafted 8th in the first round in the '86 draft. He plays three seasons and then was traded to the Clippers during the 89-90 season. And Derek Harper never played for the Cavaliers.

Everybody who knows 80s and 90s basketball knows that Ron Harper was a great player early on. After the injuries he became a role player, but never missed a beat in contributing to his teams five championships. I don’t know how you can see his growth with stunted when he did everything the right way according to the stages of his career he found himself in.
And also, Michael Jordans game-winning shot against the Cavaliers was not in the Eastern conference finals. It was the first round. In 1989 the Detroit Pistons won the East.
He was a BEAST! Posterized a lot of dudes and his defense was really solid

At the time Harper was in Cleveland before his injury, he was rated right under Jordan as far as talent. But what I get tired of is people acting like everyone was in fear of Jordan. That's insane. Players took it to him all the time. But naturally Jordan had more success. But if a person says no one talked trash to Jordan or went at him they are either lying or didn't watch much basketball during that time.

@@mrjferg74 that is true. But the narrative has grown more and more over the years that everyone feared him. And it's just not true. Did Jordan usually get the best in the end, yes. But that doesn't mean players didn't challenge him and make him earn it.
ask Gary Payton if he feared MJ. lol There were alot of players who respected Jordan's unrivaled competitiveness, but if you're a pro athlete and you're scared before you even step out on the floor, you shouldn't be playing.

I just mentioned about two weeks ago on Madison St in Chicago how cold this man was, Joe Dumars was a good defender and Ron Harper was to . And he was really about the same height and weight as Michael Jordan, before the knee injury Ron was an athletic guy who could defend well. The brother turned out well 5 championships.
