I love Japan. I think this is well established. But have I ever shared my obsession with Japanese vending machines? Well now it's time. I absolutely love the Japanese vending ecosystem. The vending machines are everywhere, they're always working, they're always stocked with all manner of beverages. I tell everyone I know about how amazing Japanese vending machines are. It's a weird thing to be so enchanted with but I hope this little video can explain why I love them so much. And you'll also learn about my all-time favourite beverage - Pocari Sweat.

Japan is a place of amazing people who showing the whole world how to take care of your country, everyone should learn from them. Again ty for an amazing Episode ❤
Thanks so much!
Absolutely love your work. Please don’t stop bringing the content.
Thanks, man!
The ones I really like are the ones that serve hot food, as well as the older vintage ones. The clever mechanisms inside intrigue me just as much as the stuff they dispense! Like the old mechanical pachinko machines for the same reason, clever little mechanisms just make me happy to watch work.
Wish I had one of the hot bowl of ramen ones somewhere close, that's be great.
I love the vintage ones too. Much harder to find but they're around.
Here is one benchmark to understand how many vending machines are in Japan:
Japan is about 5% _smaller_ in area than California.
But Japan has more vending machines than the _entire_ United States.
Well that's a staggering statistic.
I tried Pocari Sweat when I went to Hong Kong few years ago and I love it, so glad to see I'm not alone
It's utterly addictive.
I visited Japan back in 2015 and this is what I remember best haha. I was also obsessed with these! The game show Jet Lag even used these as flags for their recent "tag across Japan"-series. Highly recommend!
It was my wife's first trip to Japan and she commented almost immediately.
Going back to Japan in Nov and always use a ton of vending machines during my trips. Hope you do an updated video on Tokyo as the city has changed so much after the pandemic. Would love to see a multi-video series on the different neighborhoods in Tokyo.
Hoping to get back to Japan this year for some "proper" filming.
Great video as usual!
Vending machines are honestly such a lifesaver in the summer months. Ice cold barley tea in the Tokyo heat is second to none 🙌🏼
Oh man, it was SO hot while I was there and the prospect of a cold Pocari Sweat around every corner kept me going.
Spoken like a dude after my own heart. Japan has so many little oddities and different ways of doing things that has completely eluded the west and have even adapted to the "put everything on apps and chatbots" hellscape era we're living through in the UK. Japan understands what convenience really means, whereas the west starts with cutting their own costs and automation to simplify the customer journey. Once you see the Japanese way, you want it back home. And yes, Pocari Sweat for life. I love a Calpis Soda, too.
Yeah I know there are lots of issues with Japanese society writ large but the idea of convenience seems baked into almost every layer.
I finally made my dream trip to Japan a couple of months ago and the vending machines were genuinely my favourite thing about the place. I too am OBSESSED
Yes! The ubiquitous vending machines 😂 They really are everywhere. Boss Coffee was my favorite. I can’t tell you how many bags of candy I used to bring back for my kids when they were younger. Another thing I miss is the Japanese Curry 😱🥰🥰 This was another brilliant video. Thank you 🙏🏻
Great video!
I'm so excited to be heading off on my first ever trip to Japan in 7 weeks time and I can't wait to try these machines. I'd heard of Pocari Sweat before but didn't realise it was actually good for you, so that's definitely on my want list
Enjoy!
Thank you for the fun video. I was watching your videos about Europe first during border closure and noticed you have contents about Japan too. I can't imagine how much your videos brought people to Japan. I was very excited when I passed by the Joyful in Aso as you were talking about it in your video. :) Looking forward to your future videos. Thank you again.
Thanks so much! I love that you saw the same Joyful!
Love Japan. Will be there in about 4 Days!! You nailed the vending machines! Next up the Sneaker Washing Machines!!! As always, great content!
Wait...the WHAT machines?
@ Yup. You read right. Saw them in a laundromat in Osaka. Small little machines dedicated to wash your sneakers only! Like everything else in Japan, they work great!
Combini are another thing in Japan that makes life so much better and while not quite as ubiquitous, they are everywhere as well.
Yeah that's another of my obsessions. I think that whole infrastructure is fascinating.
There's only one sports drink which goes harder than Pocari Sweat, and that's Aquarius. The king of electrolyte replenishment.
And the great thing about Aquarius is that it's available in Europe!
If you're ever back in Osaka again, my wife and I would love to buy you and your crew a beer! We are also planning to open a brewery sometime late next year, but the offer still stands if you visit before then.
That's really kind, thank you. Can't wait to get back to Osaka! Will definitely be in touch.
Novel video idea, thanks. Vending machines are ubiquitous in Japan and their contents can often be very convenient and or quirky!
Thanks! And yes, they are a species unto themselves.
Awesome video! Does this mean you guys have more Japan content coming?
Japanese Vending Machines fascinate me.
"Hey hun, on the way home from work, could you swing by the vending machines and grab some drinks, some snacks, a full meal, a Playstation 5, a Playstation 3 with extra controllers, a weird anime figure that you won't know where it's from and it gives you a weird vibe that you can't pin down, an uncle, a samurai sword hand forged by Masamune, and a pack of smokes?"
"No worries."
Hahah absolutely spot on!
I am now obsessed with peach water! But Pocari Sweat was my no1 before that! 😂
What is this peach water you speak of and where can I find it?
@ I did drink the brand I LOHAS often but other brands are available in the vending machines. It have a big peach on the label. Really delicious!
I try to post you a amazon link of the bottle but I think it don’t work…
Love the video, Alex. Just returned from Japan and even found a sensibly placed drink machine as I approached my Mt. Fuji climb.
It's so on brand.
Pokari sweat! The legend lives on❤
The best. The purest essence of goodness.
Your voice is perfectly sexy to describe how good Pocari Sweat is! And I'm glad you love going back to Japan as much as I do. Thank you, Alex!
High five, the vending machine infrastructure there is truly amazing. After returning, I started ordering BOSS rainbow off amazon. The addiction is real.
BOSS.
Tonight's viewing sorted. Oosh!
Enjoy!
These videos suit you man to switch it up a bit! Your usual format is very useful but similar to the Beirut episode its nice to have something different, keep it up!
Thanks buddy, they're fun to make.
Japan the heaven on earth... I spend 6 months a year here and nothing comes close to touching it
Pokari sweat - best hangover cure ;)
Yes! It absolutely is. Because science.
Exactly my thoughts 😆 I just returned from my 6th visit to Japan a couple of months ago. Managed to organise a shorter visit next year on the tail end a larger Europe trip too. I'm an Aussie so must make the most of leaving this desolate island 😆
Hahah enjoy!
I too am a super fan of Pocari Sweat and I has very surprised to hear your love of it.
I saw a cream in a can vending machine which was just mind blowing
Milk was a bad choice.
I always raid Itoen machines for their sparkling umeboshi (plum) flavored drink. It's tops.👍
That sounds delicious!
It's crazy to think that they care more about vending machines than we do fast food restaurants. Like souls included. lol,,. cuz it works.
It's interesting, I didn't really see a lot of food vending machines. I suppose that's because the convenience stores are legion.
@ japan is like going to town and seeing 9 out of ten shops being fast food joints and that last one is a convient gas station store. lol
LOL, Good Stuff =)
Ha, thanks!
I admire the Japanese for their discipline and reverence. Of course there are some bad apples, but for the most part, they’re a disciplined nation. Cleanliness is also part of their religion. And the good citizens always clean up after the bad ones who litter. I think that’s why the streets remain spotless for those reasons, despite no trash cans around.
I think the expectation was set very early on and it became habit.
Are you guys in Japan right now? If so we should hang out!
Sadly no, I was there last month
I picked up Pocari Sweat for the first time in Hong Kong thinking it was normal water. I have seldom been more disgusted. It took me years to be converted to the holy church of Pocari sweat tho I am now a hydrated adherant.
Oh yeah if you drink something expecting it to be something else, it's the WORST.
Great film as usual. Look forward to the other Japan videos. The fascination in this reminds me of this guy..
www.youtube.com/@yozora_blues/videos
Thanks, I'll check him out!
I'm an introvert and I would like to be able to buy anything in these machines without the need to speak to people.
And no language barrier either.
This system wont work in new york or california.
Where have you been? I miss your segments. Hey, what's with the unkempt beard? Use your sponsor to clean up your neck or shave the entire beard.... facial hair isn't popular in Japan
Japan❤
Same.
