Should veto power of permanent members of the UNSC be revoked? | Inside Story

  • Despite more than 9 weeks of Israeli massacres in Gaza, the UN Security Council has been unable to agree on a ceasefire.
The Secretary General invoked a rarely used power to urge the Security Council to act.
But the US blocked it, using its veto power.
Critics say this absolute power of the five permanent members renders the world body helpless.
So, is it time for the veto power to be removed?

Yes, the veto power of permanent members of the UN should be revoked. When one country such as the USA or Israel can prevent a much-needed ceasefire from happening, something is very wrong with how the UN functions. There should be no permanent members of the UN Council, they should have to earn their place according to their record of human rights and humanitarian endeavors. Voting should be passed by the standard of majority rules.

The permanent members of the UNSC already have an excessive power just by having that permanent seat, this in addition to their economic power and influence. The power of veto is absurdly OP. It must be limited, as we see how this veto renders UNSC a totally useless and counter-productive entity in certain cases.
There should be more permanent members: India is not represented (being the most populous country in the world), Africa is not represented, Latin America is not represented, the Arab and Muslim countries are not represented. Not only are not represented, they are Ignored.

Without a question. Same is true for the permanent member status.
But one must also recognize that without these powers the UN likely would never have been established because no major power wanted to yield to a single organization.
Getting them to relinquish this power is incredibly hard, just like the EU getting rid of the unanimous vote requirement for many topics.
But realistically, it's all theater anyway: Neither the US nor Russia care about what the UN, or the ICJ, say if it doesn't align with their interests.

    Revoking Vito power must louder!
The VITO power in UN is the root cause of Palestinian suffering
as it allows certain countries to block actions or decisions that may have otherwise been agreed upon by the majority of the members.
This has been a major obstacle to finding a peaceful resolution to the Israeli occupation of Palestine.
Additionally, the UN could impose economic sanctions on Israel to pressure them into ending the occupation. These sanctions could include restrictions on trade, financial transactions, and investments in Israel. By putting economic pressure on Israel, the UN may be able to compel them to negotiate in good faith and find a resolution to the conflict.

It is very shocking how Biden addressed the world that they will be counting to supply military assistance to Israel. All your gusts expressed their views on the Gaza situation very well. Especially Maliah. I am strongly agree with the Russian diplomat. 🇵🇰 ❤🇵🇸

Definitely the veto power should be revoked yesterday. The injustice we see on the grounds and in UN is deplorable. The world should stand against the power of the veto countries and remove it. If this can't be done then members of the body should stop going to UN as this body has no value anymore. Shame to all leaders who don't insist of removing veto power.

This guy is great. I'm going to use his phrase " If you don't mind, I'm going to have to jump in". Brilliant. I need that when a debate in sues and I'm being talked over, my opinion dismissed and I haven't known how to speak up in that situation. Being a quiet person, raised with good manners. What normally happens is that I'm not heard until things get heated and then the person only hears the tone of the discussion and not what is being said. "If you don't mind, I'm going to have to jump in here". Is the perfect way to keep things civil, yet have my voice, information, point and stand on the topic before us heard.
    Thank you! God bless!

The important vote that carries anything should be the general assembly.
