“WandaVision” on Disney Plus explores the American sitcom from the 50s to the 2000s. Costume designer Mayes Rubeo used prints and silhouettes to come up with the perfect looks for all the characters, focusing not just on accuracy but also on being over-the-top expressive. This means we get epic moments like Wanda showing off the original Scarlet Witch costume from the comics, and Vision doing the same in his iconic green and yellow outfit-- complete with a fake Mind Stone.
Designing these costumes was no easy feat, and neither was getting into all that makeup. Paul Bettany had to come up with a weird trick to help take off the Vision makeup after filming, since peeling it off left his skin “in tatters.” To get the perfect black and white footage for the show, Bettany had to be an entirely different color than Vision’s usual red hue, and all the potential costumes had to be photographed using a black and white filter. Hair styling was also super important, with Elizabeth Olsen’s looks taking inspiration from shows like “I Love Lucy” and “Bewitched.” Her 70s wardrobe had to be all about non-stop color, emulating fashion from “The Brady Bunch.” But one of Mayes Rubeo’s favorite characters to design for was Monica Rambeau, whose groovy look and natural afro inspired actress Teyonah Parris. Here’s all the behind-the-scenes work that went into the make-up and costumes for Marvel’s new series-- including the decade that Kathryn Hahn claims was the most difficult to film.

The set and costume designers better get some recognition in next year's awards season. The show did a fantastic job at recreating the feel of every era. THE SHOW IS AMAZING!!
You are right. Give those people some Emmys.
Agree. They did a fantastic job!
The entire MCU is comprised of an amazing army of behind the scenes artists & wizards. Part of why I never have a problem sitting through the credits, those folks worked very hard to weave that tapestry of greatness that we've been able to witness over the last decade plus. Excelsior!
Agreed, but unfortunately other people like my dad don't like it because of how weird it is
It's so sad that the designer spent so much time making a custom wedding dress (that looks INCREDIBLE) and it only gets like 20 seconds of screen time :(
Paul bettany’s looks almost IDENTICAL to the comic vision. perfect actor
Which is amazing considering that he started out as just voicing JARVIS until Age of Ultron
@@surten2173 omg wow I never knew that😳
@BrunLieve nah they didn’t, Paul bettany talked about it, he was casted for his voice and later when they needed vision he got a call and he sos deny the hell not
I’m ur 1k like
@BrunLieve real planning in the MCU started after The Winter Soldier with Russo Brothers. Before that, there was not much serious planning like the build-up to the Endgame after TWS
Everything in this series is so bittersweet. Who wouldn't be happy living in a fantasy world with your loved ones alive once again? At the same time deep inside we know it has to end...

I’m holding on to hope that Vision will still be alive at the end of the series.

Every day is planned out, what scenes they're shooting, who needs to be where and when, what costumes, makeup, props, lighting, cameras and every other tiny detail that needs to be taken care of. There are people whose job it is just to see to those things. When a production company spends millions making a movie or TV show, they don't just wing it so that dumb and costly mistakes like what you wrote could happen.

Hours of makeup every single day while filming. Imagine how exhausting it must have been.

@Natalie Alejo I’m sure they get paid quite a bit though for their makeup skills
But look how much they get paid, its not like they do it for nothing.

the cast and crew of this show deserves Emmy’s, Tony’s, Oscar’s, Golden Globes, etc.
the amount of detail and research that went into each era’s styling/set, speech patterns, movements.

Paul Bettany's long and Elizabeth Olsen' straight hair in 70's. Say no more.

It’s fascinating that the late 90s is still considered as ‘modern’ even though it’s 20 years ago, while everything from the early 90s/80s backwards is considered retro. It shows that not much as changed in two decades while every decade before that was so visually unique and special.
good point, but a lot has changed since. it's just that we don't notice that, similar to how during the 90's we didn't consider the 80's retro [i assume]
@@KarateLauren Agreed!! Especially with the spread of technology and the impact of social media, things evolve much faster. New trends come and go even couple of months - weeks even - which makes it harder for certain periods of time to have a concrete feel like they did back then.
@@maggiehunter3644 Yes, this is somewhat true and I think social media and the internet maybe to blame. But I think its a lack of evolution not too much evolution. Today's fashion is still mostly a subtle variation of what we had in the late 90s, early 2000s.
Over twenty years there have been no styles that were truly decade defining that impacted everyone like what we saw in the 80s and earlier. Today, trends come and go for a few months but general stylings have remained pretty much the same (unlike the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s/Early 90s that each had their own styles unique to their decades).
I think we peaked in the Late 90s, and because of the internet people are no longer relying on a few big fashion houses/designers/trend setters to dictate what will dominate culture through tv and magazines. Instead people stick to their own styles which are often familiar variations of what went before (this applies to music as well as fashion).

I thought Vision was a bunch of good CGI with Paul Bettany being in a mo-cap suit. TO my surprise, while the CGI enhanced it, it was literal makeup.
Wait till you find out about Hulk!

That is Thanos you are talking about however. Bolin is that tall and he was painted pink, had his chin deformed and lost all his hair to play him.

Hats off to everyone making this show so magnificent as it is.
I love this show, the whole sitcom premise, Elizabeth, Paul, just everything, but I'm really terrified that it'll end like a knife in my heart. I just hope they do right by Wanda.
My favourite is the 50s, mainly because of the jokes ‘married men are killing single men at an alarming rate!’ 😂
“My mother-law was in town, so I wasn’t”
"There was only 30 meters available (...)" ... that is a lot of fabric actually...
For that episode it might not have been much. Often for TV and movies they'll make the same garment multiple times in slight variations to capture different effects for the scenes, and in that episode the designs needed to accommodate her drastically changing size and shape for the rapid pregnancy. A meter is pretty close to a yard, and most simple dresses with sleeves are gonna be 2.5+ yards. So thats roughly 10 garment versions they can make, including for any incidents on set if something needs to be remade.
Edit: In addition multiple garments will be made because of how much actors sweat on set (because of the stage lights), and may need to be changed out, and for accidents with makeup or food. If something has a decent budget, there should be multiple of any crucial garments.
@@vannareyne6336 yes, I figured that was the case too, but the dress is open in the front exactly to fit the growing belly in different stages of the pregnancy (I presumed that the fabric they were talking about is the colorful striped one). And , as you said, it was just for one episode and not the whole show and with 30 meters you can make around 15 of that dress. So 30 meters (I don't know how to measure in yards ^^") seems too much to consider too little as the video suggests. So it looked more like a typo or an over exaggeration than the actual fact...
I was looking for this comment. 30 meters is a huge amount! That must have been a typo.
Yeah. Unless they made a bunch of copies of the dress, 30 meters (or 33 1/3 yards) is a LOT of fabric, especially for a casual dress for a single episode of a show.
The dress also looks like it's made of a stretch knit fabric, (which are usually pretty forgiving on a growing body) and the way it's designed looks like it would be really accomodating for a growing pregnant belly. So unless they needed to make more dresses for the belly, 30 meters not being considered much fabric much makes no sense.
I wish I had the 70s Wanda dress soooo bad
The comic book-accurate Halloween costume was the best!
I wouldn't mind those being used once in a while in the MCU. The inspired-by costumes used are not bad in any way... But the easter egg is cool to see if only for the giggles
Without any doubt this is a masterpiece.
This series needs awards nominations in every single category! In every single potential contest.
