Extremely happy you’re starting from the beginning…not only are you going to experience the way that the band evolves musically but you’ll also taste the cathartic transformation of Maynard’s lyrics. It’s a dark ride at the start but it’s captivating. Just go along for the ride!
It's tough to explain how unique this sound was back then. Extreme bass and drums when shredding VH and the other likes of Hard rock. Tool came out heavy in the 90s. Much like Black Sabbath in the 70s. It just hit deeper.
First song from their first album and an immediate punch to the face , I am 57 years old , and have been in love with this band since this album , grew up in Zep and Floyd , loved my classic rock and 80’s metal but nothing has ever hit me like Tool!
There has been so much growth in this had to watch from the beginnings, this is definitely the best way to see that 🤘🏼🌀 I’m enjoying watching your journey bro😊
If you want the true evolution of the sound of Tool. you really should start with the EP Opiate. that was their first release and you will not regret it. I promise.
Yay!!!! You won't regret this! I always think about how young and new and so terribly talented they were. Who plays like this in their 20s?? Keep em comin ❤🌀
Bass is absolutely played with a pick, this was Paul D’Amour the original bass player playing on a Rickenbacker 4001. Some of the pick scraping and strange guitar sounds are the bass. The same is the case on later albums with Justin Chancellor on his Wal bass. Often swapping roles with the guitarist
Great Reaction! I am glad your are going through Tool's discography, it is a great ride! I see Undertow as a group of songs that remind us what will ensnare our minds and prevent us from reaching our potential. Keep going, Spiral out!🌀🌀🌀
Agree that the refrain of "lie, cheat, and steal" is definitely a reference to the Cadet Honor Code "A Cadet Will Not Lie, Cheat, Steal or Tolerate Those Who Do" but I think the song overall is broader/can have other interpretations
Paul D'Amour is the bass player on this album. Not sure if he uses a pick, but he's definitely got a different style. Justin took over after this album.
This album is best viewed as one big book, start to finish. It’s very dark, and as the album progresses you’ll figure out why. Also, in the title track you’ll understand why there is water-related sound on the opening track.
Start with the EP. Shorter songs full of energy. The sound is almost speed up funk rock. The last song of the EP is the more Tool-ish song of that release, but the rest is pure raw awesomeness
Great sound. Great lyrics and musicality. It's hard to understate the impact that they had at the time. Especially the videos on MTV. Go back and watch the original videos, but dont do it as a first reaction to the song. They are distracting. Completely amazing, but hard to watch and listen the first time. Great job. Spiral out, my friend
With TOOL, playing by their own rules was so important that they agreed to take less money in order to have total creative freedom.

Well said that's basically how I introduced my wife to the band. Raw anger that slowly matured into healing.
I'd love it if they made another album with the raw power of this one.

OPIATE IS FIRST ALBUM, 1992. THE FIRST SONG IS SWEAT. GREAT REACTIONS MAN. ROCK ON 👊🖖
So glad you are going back to their roots. You'll really be able to see their evolution.
And what an evolution it is!

We gonna tell'em about the secret songs? Especially the one for 10000 days!
The first song from the first album from the first band to ever do it ! 👽

I always thought the sound at the beginning was someone doing a bong hit.
Opiate Album is Tools first drop!!!

I believe this is about the time Maynard spent in the army at West Point

One of my favorite Tool songs. Really liked the breakdown.
Subscribed for this ride.

Definitely a plucker not a picker like Claypool/Primus.
I hoped that you would choose to do their discography.

Fantastic reaction. Keep going man. This album is genius.

Will do! Thanks

Lol
BTW, Opiate was the first album.
Thanks.
@@ErolReacts Opiate six-song EP came out before Undertow, but Undertow first full-length LP.
My favorite TOOL
Wow sums it up
Good call starting at the (almost) beginning to experience the evolution of the music. Undertow is raw and dirty and I love it. Great channel!
