  • The Canadian Jam Knot is an incredibly versatile knot that can be used in a wide variety of applications. When constructed properly, it forms a self locking slip knot. This knot is known as the Butcher's Knot or the Arbor Knot as well.

I never thought that the Canadian Jam knot could be "improved" upon, until now...excellent.

The “problem " w/ the jam knot is that it can be very hard (if not impossible) to undo if you really crank on it. The simple solution of forming the stopper as a couple slip knots is genius. Thank you. Why didn’t I think of that!

I had no idea that knots could be so cool. You have shown me the way

The slipped stopper knots looks a bit like the Dutch Speed Bowline without running the working end around an object. And, of course, you didn't let it spill into the bowline. This makes it easier for me to remember this stopper knot. Thank you!

I love your knot tying videos
In my past military time I had to teach knots to aircrew members so I enjoy seeing this kind of thing. Sometimes we would have to teach a sex knot. It is any frickin knot that works. Put a stick in it and when you needed to untie it break the stick to get the cordage loose to untie.
    Thx for the videos.

I just used this knot to tie 2 heavy rubber wedges to relieve the pressure of my spare tire carrier since it was causing damage to the retaining bolt. Now I don’t have to worry about the wedges becoming missiles if they become loose while driving. My son is an USAF SERE specialist & showed me how to do this.

I believe the difference between an Arbor knot and the Canadian jam knot is that the CJK has a long tail end that can be pulled to release the knot quickly and then tighten quickly. The Arbor knot has no tail and is more of a permanent lashing. I think your version bridges both of these knots. Perhaps this is more of a “Get out of a jam knot”.

Great knot but absolutely should not be used as a tourniquet.

Is the jam knot a slipped oystermans stopper knot?

Great video, but for educational purposes I would highly recommend new learners do not try tying knots like these around their own limbs. If you mess up the quick-release stopper for whatever reason, it's very easy to cut of circulation to your hand without being able to quickly release the knot.
In short: don't learn binding knots by tying them on your own limbs! It's dangerous!

Look up Canadian jam knot. All you need to remember is two over hand knots.

This is a modified Arbor Knot NOT the Canadian Jam Knot.

I came to say the same thing. This is missing the locking loop that a Canadian Jam Knot uses.
