I just finished "The Raven." Love the review!
Emma is reading the Raven in school this week. We shall see if she still likes it.
Great review Emma - Poe was my gateway drug in middle school to Stephen King and others. Never read horror anymore but can still quote the Raven.
Nevermore...
I love this! THE Fall of the House of Usher is my favorite. Thanks for the Shirley Jackson recommendation. I've been considering reading her House on Haunted Hill at some point soon. Timely reference.
I had the privilege of visiting Poe's house some years ago in Baltimore. Apparently, he had his wife immediately painted as she began decomposing. Very interesting guy.
Great job, Emma!
Emma thinks Shirley Jackson leans more into society thrillers instead of psychological horror like Poe, but she manages to capture an audience and then - much like another one of Emma's favorites, O. Henry - subvert their expectations. Very interesting fact about his wife!
@@tea.andagoodbook I definitely need to read her, then. Technically, gothic is more my genre, rather than horror. I like a bit of edge and good character development, but do not enjoy physical torture, etc., lol. The Brontes are my homegirls for that reason. I love everything about their lives, their home, and their strength. Charlotte and Anne, especially, interwove clear biblical themes into their works, as well, which endears my heart all the more , of course ❤️.
You ladies are one of my favorite CZcams channels. Keep up the awesome work!
@@whitneydotson643 Thank you! Emma will have to read some Bronte.
The Cask of Amontillado was the one that got me. Speaking of something wrong in the head, have you read any Stephen King books?
Emma does not want to read Stephen King. She picked up a book of his at a thrift store and did not get past the prologue. I am going to steer her toward Emily Dickinson.
@@tea.andagoodbook Great choice. I only referenced King because of the comment about Poe's state of mind.
