Before I found your videos, i had found myself falling into the trap of the alt-light youtube "rational skeptics" community. I was a big fan of Sargon and his ilk and had just assumed that they had done their research when talking about whatever they were crying about that week.
Your videos showed me how not only was their research poorly conducted, it often wasn't conducted at all. That these rational skeptics were hardly rational or honest in their skepticism.
Also Sherlock is garbage and Fallout 3 is garbage and I'm glad you had the guts to call them out. I'm still disappointed you didn't mention Wasteland 2 in your video though. That game is great.

Ex-Sargon fan here. To be fair, the septics sometimes make some good points but you have to filter a lot of shit out. Sargon's video about the working poor was good, probably cos he seems to have first hand experience of the problem so he couldn't fuck up the research. Also, he made it in the period between GamerGate running out of steam and the alt-right train getting up to steam so he had to think for himself.
I managed to get him to block me on Twitter by calling myself Sargon of Hackkad, some light shitposting and pointing out when he got wound up about stuff. I think it took about 4 tweets.

I know this is a joke, but a lot of textbooks have free online pdf versions that you can just download and read in their entirety. Alongside that, a lot of universities post full courses or lecture series online (Harvard/MIT/Stanford OCW) that you can access for free. If you have the time and effort you can get all the knowledge and practice of a Bachelor’s degree without ever paying a cent, you just don’t get the piece of paper at the end.

I mean it wasn't exactly the same but more like I just casually mentioned how I was worried that a hobby I'm interested in might also be popular among the far right and actual nazis and how I wouldn't want to hang out with nazis and then a bunch of people all started interrogating me about why not, as if I'd just said "all right wingers are bad people and should be shunned from society" rather than "I personally do not want to interract with fucking nazis when I'm supposed to be having fun." They seemed to really want to flaunt their rational and calm open-mindedness. And basically their point seemed to be that I should have no problems hanging out with nazis as long as we're not talking about politics because the nazis might be perfectly nice people in their every day life after all! It's just politics!

I really liked your point in understanding what a subject is before giving a reading list. In my country, there's this publishing company who published "What is: Mathematics" "What is: Psychology" "What is: Football" etc etc and I am ADDICTED. I NEED to know what things are now before I get into them. It's so useful!

Unlikely. I dont even think theres an algorithm hiding videos in an organized fashion because I had videos not showing in my sub box that had nothing to do with violence or politics or whatever.
My guess is YT just crumbling down from its daily traffic or more active channels get to show in your sub box and ones that upload rarely dont for some reason.

This was really neat! Really liked seeing some of your general philosophy on some aspects, even if I do not agree fully with em.
Something I gotta disagree is not so much the problem with The Game Theorists is not aproaching things of a canon perspective, I absolutely love the hell out of that, but that they often seem to REALLY want something to be a certain way, so they deliberatedly ignore data or misinterpret things that are rather obvious in favor of pushing what they want the thing to be (Sans is Ness is the biggest and clearest example of this).
I love discussing theories and headcanons, and UT is one of my fav works to do that in. But one thing one has to keep in mind is, you'll likely be wrong on your theory, or see it from a wrong angle, and discussing it is to have a better understanding on where you might be wrong or even how to strengthen your theory and the work as a whole, being willing to drop something if you see it's founded in a wrong place. Also love how UT has tons of clear breadcrumbs you can fit nicely together overall but still having a few empty spaces, that makes it fun! Being able to have multiple theories about 1 thing. But yeah, better to not want something to be that so bad and ignore data or intentionally misinterpret it just to get there.

Recently realised I was subbed to his channel from when he announced him moving into a camper van, but didn't really watch anything of his until very recently when I just fucking binged a shit ton of his videos. Dude is fantastic. He's the reason I replayed the entire Mass Effect franchise, and then the Mass Effect trilogy again right afterwards and I feel like I have an appreciation for the series more than I ever have. The best advice I can give anyone who's trying to engage themselves and others intellectually is much the same as yours. If you understand why these fields exist, how they operate, etc it's much easier to argue for them, even without knowledge of the specifics. It's also incredibly important when arguing with a person to engage them empathetically, which is what many of us (regardless of what we know or believe) fail miserably at.
It doesn't really matter how insidious the ideas a person is promoting are, and it doesn't matter how "right" you are, if you come at them aggressively they're going to shut down and be pushed further AWAY from the ideas you champion. It doesn't matter if you're revolted by the person you're speaking to, if you want a positive outcome you need to understand their position and approach them as a person, not as an epithet of everything wrong with the world.
This is something we all need to improve at, as we're seeing a massive rise in young straight white male jumping headfirst into alt-right circles because very few of us have the time or patience to explain our ideas to them. All of these ideas are very new to people, and instead of easing them in we're alienating them. Meanwhile the alt-right welcomes people with open arms, tells them what they want to hear (that they don't need to question any of their beliefs, that everything going wrong with society comes from outside of it, and that anything that says otherwise is trying to trick them) and set up those rhetoric filled non-conversations you'll run into every time feminism or civil rights are mentioned in public.

11:17 QUICK NOTE. if anyone wants to dive into Pedagogy of the Oppressed, *please* make sure you brush up on literary theory/word choice/sentence construction/etc and the foundations of sociology before reading! every sentence is loaded, you're gonna have to read rather slowly to get the full experience and understand the depth of paulo freire's statements.

One has to strike a balance though. There has to be moments when one decides to take the plunge, as people can spend a long time agonising over what they need to read. I would recommend a more active reading, with a notebook by your side, so that you can write down more difficult passages and research the terms later. To paraphrase hbomb, I didn't get Marx until I read him.
for the literary theory and sociology? of course!
the book that got me started on literary theory was a very basic primer my professor happened to have in a box of other books she was giving away called "An Introduction to Literature, Criticism, and Theory" by Andrew Bennett & Nicholas Royle.
as for sociology, i would definitely pick up a similar primer like Marx or Weber (Émile Durkheim is *extraordinarily* underrated), or better yet Talcott Parsons' "The Social System"
Will Jones yes, but i'd also like to say that *sometimes* you *do* need primers and contextualizing materials in order to understand a book or a wide spanning conversation. like, imagine if you went into a 300 level sociology course without reading Marx before in your life, or if you were attending a psychology convention without knowing how to conduct an experiment. you'd be incredibly lost and miss out on a lot of valuable information.
the reason why i put that comment forth warning people to read up on certain topics beforehand is because i initially read the pedagogy of the oppressed without those primers. it was extremely difficult and i gave up at first, until two semesters later, my debate coach offered me a copy with a gentle urge to give it another try. i read it in two weeks with google on hand and i loved it to bits once i could tell what paulo freire was actually saying.
I wasn't necessarily countering your point, as you are specific and accurate in your recommendations. Rather, I have found myself annoyed by vague recommendations such as 'Start with the Greeks' which merely seem to contribute to the anxiety generally felt about the now vast canon of literature that exists. I hope I don't sound combative, I intended to be casual.
I am SO HAPPY you mentioned doing a VtM:B video about its aging over time because i feel the EXACT same way about it!!! I remember it as being a super niche action rpg that used vampires in a way that wasn't cringey (re: Twilight) or overdone for its time. I was just really into it-- But then more recently I came across a Let's Play of it and when watching the first part of it--- It felt much different. I began to remember some parts of it (the sex workers that you drink blood from, the "twins" that have a "split personality") and grew worried that much of my love for it was merely skewed by my youthful ignorance towards these topics. Hopefully it isn't as bad as I'm thinking it is, after all the game is very dated now and those are personally the only things I can remember being really bad (besides it being a very oversexualized game, but I'm sure no one's forgotten that lol). I'm really excited to see your take on it! Good luck!
As far as social science primers go I've always found the "Introducing ___" series really good. They're short primers on the given subject, include criticisms of that area/thinker too, and are really good for breaking down what a variety of thinkers in that field had to say and in which books they said it so you can look up more about them. Plus they've got lots of pictures so you don't get bored! I also recently enjoyed Barker & Scheele's Queer: A Graphic History, which is also very thorough and approachable.

I love when impossible things happen just to prove people wrong. The goddamn author of my immortal revealed herself recently. She's actually really happy her awful fan fiction from childhood made so many people so happy. And. It was. Legitimately seriously supposed to be taken at face value. It wasn't a parody. The actual author actually confirmed it. She's also never actually stopped writing, is pretty good now, and has books for sale on Amazon!
Actually, every source I've been able to find on the author since she revealed her identity has confirmed that it was an intentionally ridiculous "trollfic."
Well, her brother disputed some of the claims she made about her ancestry. It is not a stretch to say that the co-authorship thingy she said is still up in the air. The jury's out.

I don't necessarily agree with you 100% of the time, but you always articulate yourself in a way that makes it easy to see where you're coming from, and that type of perspective is always welcome. Also you fuck with the alt-right, and we can't have too many people doing that :)

I'm late to the party but... I read Mein Kampf in 10th grade when my English teacher told me to pick literally book and write a report on it. I thought it was a funny/edgy idea and rolled with it. And the teacher never batted an eye, never told me I shouldn't do it, he read all of my writings with an open mind and encouraged me to learn from it. And now that I watch your video I look back on that and see how awesome of a teacher he was.
I would never consider myself even remotely close to supporting the ideology that that book has been used to support, but it gave me a lot of insight to a historical period that I now see unfolding all over again, and helped to awakened my desire to engage with political issues from a young age.
Anyways, I liked the humble explanation of your reading list. Thanks for making this video.

I am an enormous fan of noah caldwell gervais, and seeing hbomb reference him was amazing the first time. i was so surprised. hes so small, even more so back then, but hes getting bigger. almost squeed to hear what he said here because it's so true.
I came across Noah's videos randomly a year or two ago. I really like how unapologetically low-tech and non-youtube it is (no editing or jumpcuts...like hbomb). Also how his channel is more than just his video game essays; he's also got some travel stuff and car repair stuff. It's kind of...him. Like how Libertarian Socialist Rants has videos about anarchism and whatnot, but also him playing piano. Anyway.

I enjoyed watching this, Harris Bomberguy. I was happy that it was mostly quite earnest, which I hadn't expected going in. Sometimes in your more constructed videos you overuse a kind of distancing irony to the point that it starts to undermine the text rather than flavour it. The balance in this one seems to me much more pleasing.
Also, totally agree on Noah Gervais - he's aces.
